That said, I doubt if they realised quite how big Bryan is ! When I originally phoned to book my tickets the very nice National Trust lady commented "He seems to be a very popular man..." (who was I to argue?) Anyway, once it got going, what a show! I think that playing the hits worked well in the openair atmosphere, with everyone standing, although I was sorry to lose some of the ATGB stuff (especially Just one of Those Things). Virginia Plain was excellent. I thought Bryan was in magnificent voice - I've only seen 3 concerts on this tour but I thought his performance in this one was the best. And as for the white tux, well... The concert seemed to be a big success - well done, Bryan. I hope the others are as successful (especially Ragley Hall as I'm going to that one). Sorry I missed meeting you all - didn't see the message about left of the stage until too late (I was on the right!). A great evening. Some changes to the set to make way for "Slave To Love", "Dance Away" and "Virginia Plain". The renditions of these were excellent - "Slave To Love" on earlier tours has, to my ear at least, nearly always been a little too 'rocky' but here, with this brilliant ensemble of musicians, it was the most faithful to the recording and beautifully sung. Same comments apply to "Dance Away" - on the "Manifesto" tour the song had a long drum solo in the middle and on the "Avalon" tour it ran into "Impossible Guitar". Here though it was performed quite exquisitely with some lovely string work ahead of the final verse. The audience were excellent, responding in fine voice to all the hits and to Bryan's hand to ear gesture asking "do you want more?" which lead finally to "Virginia Plain". This band have never ceased to amaze me with what they can produce but when I heard they were to do "Virginia Plain" I did wonder whether they could capture Roxy at their paciest and most inventive but they accomplished it seemingly effortlessly. The rest of the set was largely as we've come to know and love. Hard to pick out favourites because each has such endearing arrangements but "Casanova" and "Where or When" are always spectacular and haunting respectively. I was sorry to see the passing of "Just One Of Those Things" because that was one of my favourites from the earlier set - such a witty arrangement - but all the same, good to see the set still evolving - the changes have been made by stealth so the concert is now quite different to the set which opened the UK tour back in November. Bryan seemed to have a lot of fun with the audience during the show and it must have been an incredible feeling for him to be back in front of so many people. The view from the stage must have been amazing, especially as night fell. Before Bryan was a crowd of people on their feet throughout, surrounded by huge numbers of people with picnic tables and chairs, spreading into the distance and up a small hill. Lots of the picnickers had candle - lit lanterns which looked quietly spectacular as darkness fell. Beyond all that, Bryan had the view of a beautifully illuminated Petworth House. I know everyone went to see the concert but the fireworks afterwards do warrant a mention because they were very spectacular - a number producing large and expanding rings of light in the sky that I've never seen before. Congratulations to the people who put this together and choreographed it with the music. I hope my children get to see much the same display next Friday. After the concert Jim Lawn kindly gave me an after show pass to join everyone in a small marquee at the back of the stage where champagne was flowing freely. I didn't meet Bryan because he seemed beseiged by people and I didn't want to impose but it was good to see him at such close quarters, looking very relaxed indeed. I did get to chat with Lucy Wilkins again who was, as usual, absolutely charming. When I left at 12.45 I headed back into Petworth village to retrieve my car. When I looked up, there wasn't a cloud in the sky in contrast with the overcast and slightly cool conditions earlier. In the near complete darkness that is so unique to the countryside, the stars were truly awe inspiring and the milky way could be easily picked out. For me it rounded this evening of spectacle off very nicely. Nice to see a lot of the usual faces - (Han, John, Chris, Jocelyn...) and to meet some new ones, notably Glen Lehman and Andrew Shearer. Especially good to share the concert with Jim Lawn, Robert Fedder and Glen - are your wife and children talking to you yet Robert? Look forward to more of the same at Tatton Park. Anyone travelling there by car - I hope the traffic will be organised a little better. I don't know how often Petworth organises functions of this kind but Tatton is used to hosting events that draw people in very large numbers. Petworth Park, June 23rd, 2000. I really thought it was going to be one of those days. Grappling through a host of travel nightmares in the early hours of the 23rd June, I eventually arrived in deepest darkest Hertfordshire to meet up with Ivor Canning around midday, and we were on our way to Petworth, stopping briefly en route to load up our cool box with things we weren't going to eat later. The odd traffic jam on the way, nothing too serious, and besides, we had some fine music to listen to on the way, because Ivor didn't have his Motorhead tape to hand. A selection of Bry tunes, and snippets from the current tour served as the in-car entertainment. We arrived at the Georgian House Hotel, Haslemere, mid afternoon. A noticeable array of Dutch registration plates greeted us in the car park, together with a posse of builders, and for a minute or two we really weren't sure if some sort of renovation was going on within the Hotel grounds, or if the Dutch had already trashed the place. Lovely hotel, with a Bar just about big enough to accommodate the Avalonian hordes. First thing to do was to attempt to find the Dutch contingent, but where, oh where, to start ? After much head-scratching for about a milli-second, we decided to venture out from the Hotel, oh, a good 50 yards, where we happened upon the first Pub. What a surprise to find our Dutch counterparts in there, stroke of luck eh ? Late afternoon, and Chris Turner arrived, and our take-over of the village of Haslemere was complete. Following sustinence and Beer, us 3 outnumbered Brits decided to be smart-asses and head off early, to get a decent vantage point, leaving our European friends trailing in our wake. We reached near stage front just after 6.30pm, where we discovered the Dutch already there. How did you DO that, Guys ?. The waiting game had begun. Avalonians began to drift in, homing in on the pre-arranged location. Jocelyn arrived with another 2 Sirens, and, I reckon, enough Champagne to cover us just in case the gig went on all weekend. J.O'B turned up following his usual god knows how many miles journey, and a ticketless Martin 'ligger' Stockman blagged his way in, despite us all warning Security beforehand (only joking, Martinot). So good to see everyone again, (people too numerous to mention, but I'm sure all will be mentioned in upcoming Petworth posts) and the atmosphere was building. On Stage - Enrico, Nils and friends briefly appeared to jazz us up a little with a few numbers, and - Enrico sang ! There were a few 'nasty' moments though, :.. The rain threatened, just occasionally, to remind us we were in the middle of an English Summer ; someone put on a worldy-mambo type cuban bunch of arse tape on to allegedly 'entertain' us for a while ; then 'The Pete Stanley Band' appeared as a 'warm-up', doing their first reunion gig since the Texas Bluegrass festival in 1747 ; and finally, a few ugly moments ensued with plaintive cries from audience members who didn't want to go to the toilet on their own. But I'll say no more on this. The 'Dance Area' was soon invaded, pre-gig, with a healthy (and, by now, swaying) Avalon contingent, and myself and Ivor stayed back to guard the rotting Chicken Tikka. Still a good view though, and we waited for the Man. And waited. And waited. Then - possibly the nastiest moment of all, and one which I am surprised (yet heartily relieved) didn't cause any ugly scenes. The tragic news came through that not one Avalonian had been successful in procuring the 'state of the art stainless steel kettle' in the raffle. I kid you not. 9.20 pm. Julia, Lucy, Nathalia, Lucy, and Rosie (new perm !) took the stage for the opening numbers, followed swiftly by the Band. Then, we were up and running, into the usual TWYLT, with the appearance of the Man. Relaxed, happy, and oh, what an atmosphere. It was electric. They were really up for this, and so, of course, were we. The set we all know and love marched on - LMOLM, Smoke, Chance, Carrickfergus, Casanova (again, so, so superb), Where, B. Sweet, OOTB (Lucy rules ok !), and, of course, 'The Only Face', whereupon Bry took his leave, and it was the Bands turn, for 2 numbers. (to be continued...) ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! The Show, Part 2 - shock, stun, gasp. Was that time-machine I spoke about here just 2 weeks ago really working ? Bry appeared in a white Tux - how long is it since I've seen that ? Superb. Between the Tux, and the fact that the totally plucking marvellous Julia had now let her hair down, I really didn't know where to look. Then - straight into 'Slave To Love'. A great surprise. Much recognition from the ordinary minion plebs in the audience on this one, naturellement. The Band did really well on this one, then straight into Oh Yeah. A 'Greatest Hits' package seemed to beckon. Then, 'Street Life'. Ah, heaven. All seemed well in the world at this point, I mean, Street Life, with a white Tux. Just for a second or two, it really was 1973. 'September Song' followed - a strange 'flow', but still a fave. We were in the run-in now. Avalon was next, then another surprise, 'Dance Away', which Bry hasn't done for a good long while in 'live' performance, a fact borne out by the fact that he forgot the words. We helped him out. Into Jealous Guy, thousands of whistles floating up to the Sussex sky. A blistering LST to finish, and they were oh so briefly gone, leaving us salivating for more. Within less that a minute, they were back, and into Love Is The Drug. Most of us then expected the usual finish, but rumours were abound on an 'extra' for an encore. We all held our collective breath, and hoped. Dreams come true - as Colin Good began hammering out the intro to Virginia Plain ! Amazing. The Eno-synth replaced by a swirling, dipping sax, and it really worked, it was incredible. The lights went crazy, strobe style, and 2 extra stars were born during this number - soon to appear in the brand new movie, film buffs - 'The Return of The Blues Brothers' - starring Julia and Enrico. Both positioned behind the bongos, laughing, joking, dancing, posturing, Julia in shades. So cool. The obligatory Strand, and it was all over. A wonderful evening. Almost immediately, the fireworks began, with 'When You Wish Upon A Star' as backdrop, then Prokofiev got a look in, with 'The Montagues and The Capulets', absolutely tailor-made for the spectacular above, the empty stage now bathed in deep blue. The Avalonians re-gathered, scrambling for their rugs, bags and whatever else they thought they had brought, in the fading moonlight. For the record : 26 songs, being 5 'Band Solos', 9 Bry, 12 Roxy, (although Chance Meeting and Casanova were 'Bry' versions, of course, so 11 Bry, & 10 Roxy, if you prefer). Arriving back in Haslemere, the Avalon contingent were mightily relieved to find the Bar open for residents, whereupon we duly consented to give them our custom. Much after gig chat, of the thrill of it all. These get togethers are really special. The more the Beer flowed, the more bizarre the conversation, as ever, and we were soon introduced to the alter-egos of Chris and Ivor, who turned out to be 'Pub Rock Man' and 'Prog Rock Man' after all. Happily, they had left their capes with 'PR' emblazoned on the front, in their rooms. A deeply unhappy 'Han 2' recited his own sad story of mid-gig rejection by Rosie Wetters. We'd obviously had far too much to drink, as the conversation swiftly turned to catalogue numbers, and the merits of travelling around Europe to see a 50-odd year old bloke in leather pants. Sometime shortly after 3am, we called it a night. I'd dearly love to tell you of the marvellous breakfast the next morning, but I missed it. I guess the Becks Bier of a few hours earlier was a bridge too far. I did grab the last few remnants of coffee to attempt reincarnation though. Fellow Avalonian Kevin (Routley) arrived, and we all gathered round, to discuss what Saturday should have in store for us, in the leafy countryside. What to do ? Should we idly ramble through the glorious countryside of this, my adopted nation ? Should we find a typical English country pub for lunch ? Should we find a typical English country pub for Beer ? Should some of us jump around like idiots in fields, impersonating Roxy Music album covers ? We did all of that. I'll say no more. A marvellous, marvellous time was had by all. Great to see you all again, and thanks to our Dutch friends for making it extra special. See you in the Hague ! Time, spent well, is so rare. From a personal point of view, I certainly learned some lessons from the experience: 1) Never assume you can't get to a gig just because you don't have a ticket (or anywhere to stay...) 2) Never assume you can't get to a gig just because you live in a remote part of the planet without electricity, transport or any recognisable form of written language. 3) Never bring anything you're not prepared to drag into the 'mosh pit'. 4) There is no such thing as *too much* champagne (special mention here for Jocelyn's Sirens, who were responsible for more popped corks than Rosie Wetters and Julia Thornton combined). 5) There is such a thing as too much bluegrass before a Ferry concert. 6) Always check out the prizes *before* you buy raffle tickets (I was so worried that I might actually win the kettle, I ate my tickets just to be on the safe side). 7) Be prepared - there won't always be somebody available to take you to the bathroom just when YOU want to go... 8) Dutchmen can survive for long periods of time solely on a diet of alcohol, oriental-style peanuts and chive'n'onion flavour Pringles (although some require the occasional cigar...) 9) Dutch cars never get caught in traffic jams - they just teleport directly to their destinations. 10) Never trust Dutch people with cameras and camcorders - *nothing* is 'off-the-record' ! So, everyone gets a special 'Petworth Prize' for attendance and making it a fun (and exhausting) weekend (even Chris Turner, despite his appalling lack of taste for music of the progressive variety S8^D). I took two friends to this gig, and we had an absolutely smashing evening, hadn't have so much fun since 1981, the last time I saw roxy Music live! They started a little passed 10 PM and played 23 songs, and boy did they play the songs right! During quite a few songs it almost was Roxy Music... Frightening! Worst of all, I almost danced to the (roxy) Music. Hey Ron that really is a compliment! We also sang along for all songs, teh Latin part in 'Song For Europe' was done by us, as well as the Sirens on 'Both Ends Burning'. Soon after that the place was empty... No just kidding. It was a wonderful evening, and I had a little chat with some of the bandmembers. Took home the list of songs they played and the flyer. thanx for signing the playlist Ron! If you've got a chance to meet Re-make/Re-model, do so, you won't regret it. She was totally mesmerised by the whole set, but commented: "How come someone who always looks so sad and pensive in photos comes alive in concert?". It's true, isn't it? We see very few pictures of Bryan looking happy, and yet throughout this tour he appears to have been thoroughly enjoying himself, and at Petworth the smile rarely left his face. The backing group have always looked as though they've been having fun, but last Friday the smiles on the "glamorous string quartet's" faces (especially Lucy W) were broader than ever. Until now, my sister has never fully shared my enthusiasm for BF/RM - possibly something to do with having to share a room with me and my assorted posters of Bryan circa 1973/74! The sobering thought (for me!) is that I was the same age as aforementioned 14 year-old niece when I bought my first Roxy/Bryan albums in (For Your Pleasure and These Foolish Things). Anyway - I'm pleased to report that my sister is now a complete convert and intends buying the SLT compilation in 2 weeks' time. Very hard to pick a favourite from Friday. My favourites on the tour have been "The Way You Look Tonight", "Smoke", "Where or When", "The Only Face" ,"OOTB" ,"LST" and "Do the Strand" (OK, I liked everything) - all were brilliantly performed last Friday. But the inclusion of Slave to Love, Dance Away and (especially) "Virginia Plain" made Petworth the best so far for me. And I loved the tango/fandango/waltz tempos included in Do The Strand. I must admit I wondered how the set would work as an open-air concert, but any concerns were totally unfounded. Bryan's voice just gets better and better. Looking forward to Ragley Hall and Castle Howard (bought the tickets for latter today!). I just hope he brings out the white Tux again.
