Is there any Avalonian who'll be stuck at a nearby train station prior to the Gig ? We need to know, so a rescue plan can be mooted. Finally, have any definite arrangements been made re the 'Avalonia Saturday Lunch by the sea' mooted earlier ? I guess it could be at least 30 attending which would be great - I'm sure all of us staying at the 'Georgian' in Haslemere are up for it - and that's about 15 or 20 of us at least, I think. So, by all means mail me offlist (johnny.reece@virgin.net) on this and we'll try and work something out. Sounds like fun, before we all go our separate ways again on Saturday afternoon. Thanks, (still thinking of that 'double 99'), ...Reecey... PS There will be a special prize, for the person who builds a sand castle in the shape of Petworth House. Just like so many others in the UK, my first purchase of theirs was 'This Town' followed by 'Kimono'. It was after that, that I investigated the previous 2 albums. 'Propaganda' is a great Album too, the follow up. I think things got sidetracked a little by the time 'Indiscreet' came around, although good singles from it - but the Album itself did them some damage, and, UK wise, their time really was up. A brief flirtation with us again enhanced by Moroder followed a couple of years later, but that was that. Out of loyalty I did buy some 80s material, but it really wasn't up to standard. I did see them 'live' a couple of years back - great to see them, but they've always worked best, musically, with a Band - not alone with backing trax, which I dislike. For a while, in the mid 70s, the music press at the time did mention them often in the same breath as Roxy, not because of their music, but because of their originality. Ah Yes, 72-76, Roxy, Ferry, Sparks, Rebel, Bolan. Don't get me started. Thanks, Sebastian, I just won a small bet with myself on long it would take for Mr Reece to respond to your comments. I suspect he doesn't even need to be connected to detect a Sparks thread (some form of ESP or 'Extra Sparks Perception', I believe !). Anyway, nothing useful I can add to his comments except to say that both Sparks and Roxy had songs covered by Siouxsie and The Banshees on their 'Through The Looking Glass' album ('This Town...' and 'Sea Breezes', if anyone's keeping count) n.p. 3 Mustaphas 3 'Shopping' - I can hardly type for laughing at the rap on 'Xamenh Evtexia/Fiz'n' - take it to the fridge indeed ! The running time has been edited down to one hour and believe me you won't be disappointed by the final product. I hope to be able to post a release date for the video and DVD during the coming week. Bryan Ferry - Au Grand Rex - Paris 09/03/2000. The way you look tonight. Love me or leave me. Smoke gets in your eyes. Chance meeting. Casanova. Where or when. Bitter Sweet. Out of the blue. The only face. Oh yeah. You do something to me. Just one of those things. Avalon. Jealous Guy. Let's stick together, Love is the drug. The sound and picture quality are excellent as is the performance given by Bryan and the band. For me the highlights have to be Bitter Sweet and The only face. For those who already have the Cirque Royal video this will be a fine companion piece especially with the open air shows coming up over the next couple of months. It's just a pity that the entire show is not being released, but with the possibility of Castle Howard being released later in the year we certainly have a lot to look forward to. The usual hackneyed stuff is trotted out. There is, however, an interesting quote about Colin Good, in a paragraph that starts ..."Surprisingly Ferry thinks his new band bears more resemblance to the glam-rock of early Roxy than the more refined sound of his later work."I have a pianist <> who as well as doing his own thing can also play exactly like me, because he's listened to the records and scored what I'm playing, and its the first time anyone has done that. For me the acoustic piano was an important part of the early sound."" And later..""There is one song on this tour called "The Only Face. Its from Mamouna. I play piano and sing and the string quartet join me - a lot of people say thats the best thing in the show, and for me thats like : oh, thanks, because I did that in the 1990s and I thought I was finished as a songwriter !" Far from it." (The last three words are the reviewers, not mine.) Slightly disingenuous that last bit though ...Didn't Bryan confess at RFH that he'd started writing TOF in the late 70s ? A million thanks to the creators of The Avalon Ballroom. It complements the other tour recordings. I'm especially glad that we have a record of his "dedications" to les enfants et Lucy before Only Face. A treasure so rare that even devils might care. Didn't someone prepare some sleeve artwork for the jewel-case ? Could I be directed to it ? And is there a marker pen that can be used to write on the CD ? As my children are wont to employ my tour boots as coasters I think I'd better get a tad more organised. Who can sleep in this heat ?
