Unfortunately, I must have always run with the wrong crowd since very few Americans recognize the name, Bryan Ferry. I would say BF is not a household name in the U.S. And that may very well be a large reason for his under-rated status. Keeping in mind that Americans are by far the largest consumers of music, in terms of money, any momentum created in the states by Roxy/BF was greatly diminished by the lack of fan access to Mr. Ferry - too few concerts, poorly promoted tours and records, inadequate airplay, and too much time between releases. Just wanted to add here that not everyone considers "Day for Night" any of these negative things. I've always treasured this song, particularly his vocals. I'll grant you it's about 45 seconds too long, but emotionless it certainly isn't. It's the song that really made me a fan when I first heard Bete Noire. I think another problem with Ferry's profile is the rather weird habit the British press has with anyone who misses the top 20. In America, making #21 or #26 is considered reasonably good. In Britain, you have goons like that Paul Stump guy calling "Don't Stop the Dance" or "Both Ends Burning" flops. This gets picked up and perpetuated. I'll grant you that #37 is low, but as long as it made the top 40, my American mind considers that fairly respectable. Of course, if a song in this country makes the top 10, it's not going to fall out of the chart altogether for eight or nine months... "DRAT! This would have to happen when I'm in a rented tux!" Where I live, you almost never hear of Bryan. I have been a fan for many years, but then again, I'm a musician and I've always sought out different musicians. I first heard Roxy around 1975, "Siren" and have been a fan since, but I still get blank stares from most people, (even musicians) when I bring him up. I even went so far as to cover some of his material at a Gasparilla extravaganza one year. The crowd loved the stuff, but he's still a mystery to most Americans. I remember watching Saturday Night Live especially for his appearance, and immediately bought Bete Noir. It's still one of my favorite albums. He just doesn't get much press here. It's a shame. It's also unfortunate in the states how the radio programming is handled. If you don't sound just like a lot of other people who are selling at the moment, you just don't get played. The current state of popular musiv here in the states just sucks. > Unfortunately, I must have always run with the wrong crowd since very > few Americans recognize the name, Bryan Ferry.
