Could it really be that you are unaware of the original version of the tale (abandoned at the storyboard stage as being too gritty for Walt's taste) ? This is the true basis for Bryan's song cycle and explains the two songs you rather conveniently tried to ignore. In the original version, the Siamese cats are in fact Siamese twins and 'Sea Breezes' is the lament of 'Si': 'I've been thinking now for a long time how to go my own separate way'. In the final tableau, Lady runs off with a German Shepherd and Tramp ends his days roaming the countryside in search of his lost love. 'Bitters End' is his swansong: 'the farmyard chorus sings its wake' and 'I never thought I'd be a rover' (note how Ferry manages to convey 'dog' and 'wanderer' in a single word - brilliant !) Close, Colleen, but definitely no cigar... Respectfully yours, Brigadier-General, The Hon. There's been some debate about the oriental feline subtext and I think we can safely conclude that this particular canvas was turned to the wall for a few years, yet brilliantly revisited in Tokyo Joe. "Two oriental eyes implore you Femme fatale or ingenue She very cunning, fiendish clever." Yes I know opera buffs have suggested that there's a hint of Madame Butterfly in this underated masterpiece, and - to hell with it - a whiff of From Here To Eternity, ("GI Boys howling out for more") but who can deny that Si and Am are the main protaganists ? ("VIPs PURRING je t'adore.") It all makes purrfect sense. Big 14in. pic. of him all in his whites (gorgeous).A tidbit----- It's always there, the image. Mention Bryan Ferry,& you conjure a picture of a Luchino Visconti anti-hero, brooding, self-absorbed & tragic---only this one fabulously dressed, hair artfully arranged, a dandy in aspect. So strong is that fashion-plate image that it pervades discussion of the singer's career. One clever journalist described the British pop star's work as haute couture funk. And yet, Bryan Ferry is one of the world's most beloved rock god's, a formidable musician & songwriter whose output beginning with his work at the helm of Roxy Music, ranks among the most influential in contemporary music. Ferry recordings are heavily anticipated by a legion of fans no less faithful than Grateful Dead Fans. "There had been no discipline." Mr Ferry told writer Mark Edwards." I'd had no producer & no manager." It goes on to say, Ferry spun his wheels, doing up to 50 tracks each on some of the songs he did come up with.Which was to have been "Horoscope". It shelved while he recorded & delivered to largely unsuccessful Taxi. also while Mamouna is quite good , it does not come loaded with hit singles. Instead , the album is the kind of elegant aural treat one has come to expect from the latter-day Bryan Ferry. This of course was the Mamouna tour to my city Dallas in 94. He graced the cover of the mag. & also a two page spread with pic on the inside. After the concert, was another article with pic. Think of all those poor souls > that have never heard"Chain Reaction". - - you could go back a few years more. If the quick studio re-take, radio friendly "Dance Away" did'nt make it to No 2 in the charts, "Manifesto" would have flopped ie resulted in a financial disaster, very serious considering this was Roxy's first LP after the Re-union. The third single "Angel Eyes" (also re-made disco style) was also successful. Even Phil Manzanera once mentioned that he was in the red until the 1980 period. Bryan's music and ambitions should not be compared to the Marketing Agents hell-bent on producing stars for the masses. Just look at the efforts being made to guide Kylie Minoque back to the top. The RM money years were obviously 80-82, and with his solo career Bryan can't be disappointed (financial wise). I believe his music was always more important to him and trying to satisfy record co's, although with "Boys and Girls" he really had a great chart album - powered on after his Wembley First Aid performance. Bryan Ferry is nevertheless a household name, unfortuneately often under-rated, brilliant throughout the years (am I the only one who adores Mamouna ?). I have always subscribed to the view you express - it definitely went pear shaped with the release of Bete Noire and not just with sales either. For some strange reason Ferry put time wasting tracks on it amongst the brilliance of the others. These are Day for Night, The Name of the Game and Seven Deadly Sins, 15 minutes plus of repetetive over produced emotionless music. What also didn't help was the inexplicable chart failure of "The Right Stuff". Class commercial track, great video, Johnny Marr and...................... no 37 !! Hit singles sell albums there's no two ways about it and for some reason that stiffed. So did the fairly commercial Kiss and Tell which followed. The really ,really sad thing is that if The Right Stuff had come out within 12 months of B&G it would have been top 10. That said ATGB has sold pretty well considering. He toured the West Coast, recently completed a European jaunt, is planning an HBO variety show and has scheduled a full-scale summer romp with Phil Lesh. In May he turned up (albeit half an hour late) in Stockholm to accept the Polar Music Prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. (It's the aural equivalent of the Nobel Prize, if you're keeping score.) He never said a word, smiled once and listened to Bryan Ferry cover "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Then Bobby picked up his award (and a cash prize of more than $100,000) and skipped the after-party to jump on a plane and rejoin his never-ending tour. Kicki, were you there?
