Jas, for me the line from 'Psalm' which actually goes '...his harmony thine' is forever cast in MY mind as '...his armour divine'. Personally, I think 'my' version is the better lyric...! But don't take our word for it, here's what Brian himself has to say on the subject of artistic intent and interpretation: ''When I listened to my previous albums I was surprised by my confidence in simplicity. I am also surprised to remember that what I was doing was at the time guided by another set of pretexts from those by which I now perceive it. The pretexts change as my historical view reframes and shuffles itself to accommodate and rationalise *this* present. To make this clearer: when you begin a piece of work you may have in mind a set of 'reasons' which supposedly motivate the work. They are useful because they provide a sense of direction and an initial push to overcome the inertia of habit. But when the work is finished these reasons suddenly become alibis: mere rationalisations of a complex series of trials and errors that actually made the piece and if the piece has answered certain questions those are almost certainly not the questions that were being asked at its inception. Sometimes you discover the question after making the answer." ...Brian Eno, from the press release for 'Before And After Science'. > I had lots of oblique personal references on > it and dared people (that is anyone who heard it) to interpret it. Only > I have the keys to unlock it and even I still don't know where the song > was going. Okay Some years ago I wrote two of my best songs over the same weekend - 'Walking Through The Fire' (a fast number) and 'On Some Distant Hill' (slow). I have always been pleased with how well they suited their musical settings and assumed that my intentions had been clearly and fully formed in that burst of creative frenzy. I was recently astonished to find a (very rough) demo in which the title of the latter song was originally sung to the chorus of the former ! Honour thy mistakes as hidden intention... Regards, Parcels Mc Flibberty. Postscript: My seven-year-old son came in last night while I was listening to Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town', sat down with his book in hand and said 'Cool ! Toy Story 2 !' (it was used briefly in the film trailer). So, having heard it just once in that context, that song will always be 'The Ballad of Woody and Buzz' to him (regardless of the dubious nature of some of the lyrics...) n.p. 'The Avalon Ballroom' - Thanks Simon. A question though, which I've meant to ask before - why does Nils Solberg think it's appropriate to play the 'Layla' riff in the middle of 'Out Of The Blue' ?? Is that the only 'rock guitar' he knows, perchance ?...or is he being sarcastic ??
