This reality may or may > not simulate what actually is: Where's that Rene Descartes when you need him ? From a biological perspective, we process our visual world by way of pattern recognition - - the brain analyses images for structures then compares what we see with what we have previously experienced. This filtered, interpreted view is how we see the world. I believe the same process is at work when we recognise music. > The artwork ultimately stands on its own in the realm of multifaceted > chaos. I think the *perception* of order is essential to the acceptance of sound as a piece of music. I would posit: a) Music has no objective reality. b) Music without a responsive audient is just sound. c) Music without an audient at all is just physical vibration. Patterns in music come in many forms e.g. in terms of pitch (melodies and harmonies), timbre (arrangements) and, with songs, words. Different sorts of music specialise in different types of patterns (and in different degrees of scale), some is particularly rhythmic and may involve simple or complex pulses, some is rich harmonically or timbrally. So the further a piece of music departs from an audient's previously-known patterns, the less likely it is to be accepted as music at all. So Balinese gamelan sounds strange to a West European audience because not only is it unusual to them tonally but rhythmically and timbrally as well. After repeated exposure, of course, people will begin to perceive patterns and to accept it as music. Of course some people are more attuned to learning new musical patterns than others (or are just more receptive) and will 'understand' the music on first hearing. Where it all gets rather complex and mysterious is why certain patterns (and combinations of patterns) should be more 'pleasing' to certain listeners than others. I suspect the reasons for this are so individual that they defy any practical analysis - our opinions can change over time and some pieces of music are more welcome at different times of day or in certain moods. So, I can accept 'Cry, Cry, Cry' as a piece of music. I can accept that it is played well according to my expectations of the musical style. Yet... Critics are at best a reflection of experiences filtered through themselves, as are we all. Therefore I must confer, the artist's frame of reference is most important to an "objective" analysis of the art in question. This harkens back to Kevin Sheridan's post, as follows: "The difficulty with this whole "bad song" discussion is that it flattens out Ferry--who, obviously is not only a complex artist, but an ironic self-consciously Pop Artist to boot. Fully half of his art is the way his worldview filters the possibilities. Which is an obscure way of saying that intellectual intent--that old PoMo bugaboo--really does need to be given equal weight with the performance of a song or its construction." I just wish we could get Mr. Ferry to clue us in! Left to our own devices, our interpretation of his work may not remotely resemble the original idea. But then, maybe that is the intent. Whatever!! That is (right or wrong with respect to their personal view/evaluation of an object), and this is what I believed Tim was referencing, too. Correct me if I am wrong, Tim. Ivor, your three postulates remind me of the tree in the forest falls , no one hears it, so does it make a sound? I believe all things, physically tangible or not, have objective reality. If not, we would have no cognition, - no ability to Postulate, for instance. True, music must be heard and processed by a receiver in order to be recognized as music and not as mere sound. Music with no receiver is just a physical vibration. Yes, music, sound, silence, colors, everything we touch, see, or feel is physical vibration, only their frequencies are different. Every particle that impacts upon our senses has mass and energy, and is subject to fundamental forces. However, reading that discussion has emboldened me to the point where I feel as if I can share something which means a great deal to me. And that is that I am convinced that the eponymous Roxy Music album is actually a song cycle about _Lady and The Tramp_. I know you are all film buffs here, not unlike our beloved hero, so I will therefore spare you a recitation of the brilliant plot. If you have not seen it, suffice it to say that it is a meditation on pride, on not judging people on appearances, on valor, on the pain of being outcast, on social and economic class, and, most importantly, on True Love. A few examples from the lyrics should suffice to make my case. First, is clear that "Re-Make/Re-Model" is Tramp's lament after he first meets Lady and it is clear that her friends think he is from the wrong side of the tracks: > But if there is no next time where do I go? > She's the sweetest queen I've ever seen (CPL593H) Which leads into a more fully-fleshed version of an ode to her in, obviously, "Ladytron" > You've got me girl on the run around run around > You've got me all around town > You've got me girl on the run around > And it's getting me down, getting me down which no doubt refers to all of the scrapes that Lady keeps getting into due to her sheltered upper class upbringing and her blind faith in the forces of authority which until then have never been used against her. "If There Is Something" is then Lady's song as she realizes it is the lower class Tramp who is the person who keeps rescuing her from the very people who are supposed to be protecting her from him: > Where would you go if you were me > Try to keep a straight course not easy > Somebody special looking at me > A certain reaction we find [...] > I would put roses round our door > Sit in the garden The famous scene of the two of them sharing a romantic dinner at Tony's, when they both come upon the same strand of spaghetti, and share that iconic cinematic kiss, well, how can that not be the inspiration for these lines in "2HB" > Take two people romantic > Smoky nightclub situation > Your cigarette traces a ladder > Here's looking at you kid Later Lady, chained up by the evil Aunt Sarah, thinks about her love, Tramp in "The Bob (medley)" > I dreamed last night about your face > Your star shone all night > Over the moon it shone brighter > Star shimmering so bright [...] > But this was only life's story > Made simple that's right while Tramp is overjoyed when he rescued from the pound (in "Chance Meeting") > I never thought I'd see you again > Where have you been until now? > Well how are you how have you been > It's a long time since we last met > It seems like only yesterday when I first And then the happy ending of "Would You Believe?" > Well I'm sure I'll love you all my life > And in the morning too I'm continually amazed by the level of meaning in Ferry's songs. This is after all what makes songs 'personal' (sic) to individuals. My point exactly. Now you know why I intrepreted Rotterdam for Notre Dame. My bubble was broken two months ago on this particular song, but im my minds eye a very long shadow was cast and it still remains my obsession. As for being a creator, I wrote a song years ago called Slab on the Beach (orginally titled Einstein on the Beach- until I found out that that title had been used). I had lots of oblique personal references on it and dared people (that is anyone who heard it) to interpret it. Only I have the keys to unlock it and even I still don't know where the song was going.
