I begged him to be lenient, I really did, but he was insistent that he was the guy who makes the rules (it was Patrick Troughton, btw) and he couldn't have a bunch of people taking time into their own hands. He punished me by making me listen to the latest Cher album, then locked me in an elevator with the Gypsy Kings. For an hour. He then said he would only let me fulfil my 'outside the 5' gigs (Nina Simone 1958, Dexter Gordon 1957, Eddie Cochran 1959, Eno & The Winkies 74, C. Rebel, Beatles, Hendrix etc etc) if I carried on the 'great lyrical moments of BF & RM' thread which i touched on briefly last night - "you see I know it sounds crazy" etc... So, i'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I'm sure I'll think of many more as time goes by (sorry) but 3 that immediately spring to mind to me are "You're tantalising me" from Prairie Rose, and the marvellous line "You know I don't talk much, except to myself" etc from A Really Good Time. At least a whole chunk isn't missing, like the downright silly single edit of 'Hard Rain' ! I understand why they did it, but it makes a nonsense of the structure of the song. The single edit I never understood was the faded-out Davey O'List solo to 'The 'In' Crowd'. It was a hell of a surprise when I got the album and found the track carrying on - I thought I'd died and gone to heaven,k I was so ecstatic ! > Also, this may have been addressed before, but why was Bryan not involved in the "Do They Know it's Christmas" project. I don't have it to hand, but Geldof's autobiography ('Is That It ?') mentions cajoling Ferry to do the Live Aid concert and enlisting Lucy's help in persuading him. He seemed keen to help out but was (typically, we now realise) concerned about the logistics and getting everything *just* right - the search for perfection really is his own predilection. I don't remember Ferry being mentioned in connection with 'Do They Know It's Christmas', though. However, right at the end, you can quite clearly see, to the *right* of the drum riser and behind Bryan, a *different* bass player altogether (a dark haired geezer playing a Fender bass - check the number of tuning pegs at the top of the headstock, it certainly looks like four to me). Who is he and what's he doing there ??? First recording purchased personally: Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis, 78 rpm. It was soon broken and finally replaced by a 45, but first we had to buy a phonograph (gramophone to you Brits) that could handle the new technology. First gig attended: The Beatles at Carnegie Hall! Sat in balcony, great view, but heard only screams of teenies in orchestra seats. Time Machine: Roxy in '72 (tiger skin, feathers & leathers) Roxy in '73 (Musikladen if not mimed) Roxy in '74? (military not gaucho) Bryan in '76? (pencil-thin 'tache + Jerry Ferry) Roxy in '82 or 3 (not Fréjus, too hot) - -Betsy ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! 'Cirque Royal' has been completed for all the UK/Europe/Japan etc Avalonians, last batch is ready to roll, post wise, Monday morning, June 12th. As much as I've enjoyed doing it, i'm relieved it's over, as there are many studio projects I have had to put aside, which I have to now go back to, for the entire last 2 weeks of June (Petworth excluded, of course). Also, I am away a great deal of July and August, so it's been a close run thing to get it all done. My VCRs are now going to Tobago on holiday for a couple of months. I can't go, unfortunately. Final tally was 104. This doesn't include 9 who asked for the Vid long, long ago but didn't bother to send payment, who i've mailed privately to ask if they've been living in a cave since the 2 'last calls' for the Vid. I'm afraid that if you are one of those people, you'll have a bit of a wait on your hands, sorry - work comes first, and July and Aug are very busy for me. The total does include 1 who has paid but I don't have his address - hey Tom Wedberg where are you ! It'll be interesting if Paris (Le Grande Rex) is 'officially' released. As far as I can remember, there was another 'new' violinist that night, one Helen Hawthorne. In fact, I think she took the place of Lucy W. that night, if memory serves... Perhaps one of my Parisian colleagues from that night can confirm that for me please... I have to go back to Paris July 7-9 for more alleged work, so i'll tip my beret (if i'm wearing one) as I pass by the venue. Chris Turner - can you give me info on decent Record Shops (Vinyl) you found there please ? I've done the usual and been a sneaky little git by coinciding the following bit of work in France (July 15 & 16) with the Ferry Gig in the Hague, on July 13 - meaning the Station pay for my travel. Ha ha ! - Don't tell them. Getting very impatient for Petworth now... Reecey... ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" !
