The best you could hope for was Roger Whittaker once a year at Christmas and you don't get that sort of punishment for armed robbery these days... By the time I escaped to England (tunnelling at night while the rest of the lads were at choir practice to cover the sound of digging) most of my favourite bands were a thing of the past, but I still managed: 1) Twelfth Night (anyone remember them ? no) 2) The Enid (a unique band) 3) Gordon Giltrap (what a guitarist) 4) Judie Tzuke (what a...voice !) 5) Pink Floyd ('The Wall' at Earl's Court) Now, time machine gigs...well, spoilt for choice here, aren't I ? 1) Roxy - anything at all really , especially very early (Reading University would be a laugh !) or 1974. 2) Gentle Giant - ditto, but especially 1976 3) Gryphon - ditto again, but 'Red Queen...' era would be cool 4) King Crimson - anything in the Wetton/Bruford period (with or without Muir) but I like Arnie's suggestion of Central Park 1974. 5) Wagner's 'Parsifal' premiere at Bayreuth 1882. 6) Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' premiere in Paris 1913 (what a riot). 7) Be Bop Deluxe - anything, absolutely anything at all ! 8) Greenslade - the tour for 'Time and Tide' (1975). ...and , oh, loads of others too numerous to mention. Regards, Ivor. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! I have lit the Pointer Sisters that way, as well as Flo and Eddie, Mark Lindsay (scary!), Gary US Bonds, Sarah Brightman, and many others. There is a gazzillionaire in Chicago who spends $7 Million every year on a private party, and one year he brought in the Stones (in a nightclub!). The next year he brought back Cirque du Soliel, tent and all. Last year he RENOVATED the old Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, and brought in James Brown, Aretha Franklin (with a 200 voice gospel choir!) and the local avante garde puppet theatre, who I worked with. That a corporation would bring in someone of Bryan Ferry's stnding is not surprising. That they brought in BF himself, is a surprising show of taste on the corporations part... Andrew, the corporate whore, in Evanston Andrew, Buddy, Pal..... You did that gig last year at the Aragon?????? Why did I not know you then?????? I heard about it and saw the limos down the street but could not figure what the fuss was. Wow! When you do the next soiree, the number is........:)))) Flo and Eddie ?? Really?????? Yes, Mark Lindsey-very scary! What would they be ? I'll kick off with mine. 1) Roxy Music late 1972, London. 2) Shangri-Las, 1965, New York. 3) Chet Baker, 1955, Paris. 4) Beatles, Cavern. 5) T. Rex , 1972 tour. It was so tricky cutting it to 5 for me, as Hendrix, Dexter Gordon, Eddie Cochran and a host of others just missed the cut. They'll be on the second time machine trip. I really drink far too much coffee, don't I ? Reecey... I missed this thread but here are my five: (1) Hendrix at Monterey (1967) FIRE indeed! (2) Beatles- London rooftop Jan.1969 The last time (3) Band of Gypsies ( Dec. 31, 1969-Jan. 1,1970) (4) Bob Marley at Santa Monica Civic- June 1976 ( I was there in front!) (5) Roxy- 1975 Tour Chicago ( so sorry I missed that!) Others too close to call: Stones (1969 Chicago), James Brown (1967 Reagal Theatre -Chicago.I was there for that one)P-Funk (Cabaret Metro Summer 1989 was there for that one),Iggy Pop (Cabaret Metro June 1988 - -MISSED THAT ONE!) Gang of Four (Chicago Summer 1982-was there) La Belle (1975 Chicago-they burned!!!), Segovia (Concert Hall 1981 Chicago) on and on... First ROCK Concert: Sly and the Family Stone Summer 1969 ( also the first riot I was "near" August 1970 First Rock Concert I walked out on: The "almost" Sly and the Family Concert August 1970 ( there was a riot going on!) Best Concert I ever attended: Bob Marley and the Wailers 1976. Every time I hear the beginning back beat and the first notes on Trenchtown Rock it just stops me dead in my tracks. That one still resonates to this day. Being in front of the stage, watching those dreadlocks fly ,the band lock into tight grooves, and a little stoned...ah, it just could not get better than that. At least the part near the Aragon.... It's an old Twenties Ballroom. My Stepfather celebrated VE day there, and said it was run down even then. I saw Elvis Costello's frst Chicagoshow there, as well as the Talking Heads, the Clash, and many lesser lights. During the renovation you could run your finger along the domed ceiling and get enough marijuana resin to fill a pipe. Now it is clean, which makes it a bit disturbing. Not unlike the current incarnation of Times Square in New York. THE STRANGLERS: The Place, Dover, NJ -- March 25, 1978 The first of dozens; most recently, Oct/Nov 1999 in England 3. DAVID BOWIE: Spectrum, Philadelphia -- April 29, 1978 Wine, pills, wild & crazy friends; I would love to have a chance to see that show again, only straight! 4. ROXY MUSIC: Palladium, NYC -- March 29, 1979 My first live Bryan experience. 5. ELVIS COSTELLO: Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ -- March 30, 1979 My thrilling first EC show, of what is now close to 100 shows 6. DRAMARAMA: Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ -- July 9, 1994 Their final, farewell show .. the greatest, overlooked and under appreciated, American band! 7. JOHNNY CASH: Freedman Forum, Anaheim, CA -- April 13, 1996 Front and center, and one of my last Man In Black concerts before illness ended his touring days 8. NEIL YOUNG: Irvine Meadows, Irvine, CA -- Sept. 12, 1996 Solo acoustic: 12 guitars, 3 pianos/organs .. so poignant and powerful, I still get chills when I talk about it. Plus, PATTI SMITH was the opening act! Only show I've ever walked out of: JAMES TAYLOR at Pacific Amphitheater, Costa Mesa, CA ... went along as a favor to a friend; what a boring snooze-fest ... I finally just couldn't take it any more.
