I caught this driving home last evening so was unable to tape it. You've included more detail than I might have, however, when they mentioned his new release they actually refered to Slave to Love not ATGB. (Bry is getting better at timing his promotional interviews!) Mike > BF was interviewed on the R4 arts prog. this evening, I guess along the lines of a contemporary style icon. He didn't add much that we don't already know, eg:his Sat job in a tailor's shop and his monitoring of Ted and Mod fashion as a teenager, moving on to his Uni experience under Richard Hamilton. The interviewer did make the point of asking whether his 'stylishness' was a rebellion against his modest upbringing, but Bry attributed it more to the fact that he was into 'style' through being an art student. > The interview was intercut with clips from SL and LITD( I think) and also made the (double-edged, from BF's standpoint)remark that here was someone from the pop world who wasn't a young thing, but still had style! > It finished up by saying that BF had a new album out ie ATGB and was soon to embark on a series of Country House concerts. > (Apologies; I was unable to tape the interview as I was in the middle of bathing my 3 year old daughter when this came on the radio, so I'll have to leave it to the professionals out there to see if they can get hold of a tape- it only lasted about 3mins). ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! Wish I'd thought of that, so here's mine. It's a goodie, luckily. Roxy Music, supported by Sharks and Lloyd Watson, 6th April 1973, Greens Playhouse, Glasgow. (Seat CC42 in the Balcony if you must know). Tickets a mere 60 pence. Wish I could remember more about it though, brill and all that, but the memory has blurred a lot. Eno resplendent in peacock feathers of course, until the encore when he donned a silver number. Ferry stage right most of the time, no focal point for the band then (arguments over that up n' coming, as we all know) until late on when he took centre stage. Great backing vox by Eno & Mackay during 'Lagoons'. I'll revisit around this time period when I get delivery of my time machine. Which brings me to this. Had this following discussion (again) abroad last weekend, and a few listeners joined in. I found it quite fascinating. If anyone here wants to join in, (with advance apologies to the bandwidth police) - I'd be interested in your thoughts, as there is such a marvellous diverse bunch of opinion on this list. Question was : You have a time machine, and can go back, invisibly, and attend 5 Gigs of your choice. What would they be ? I'll kick off with mine. 1) Roxy Music late 1972, London. 2) Shangri-Las, 1965, New York. 3) Chet Baker, 1955, Paris. 4) Beatles, Cavern. 5) T. Rex , 1972 tour. It was so tricky cutting it to 5 for me, as Hendrix, Dexter Gordon, Eddie Cochran and a host of others just missed the cut. They'll be on the second time machine trip. I really drink far too much coffee, don't I ? Reecey... But, the first record I remember buying was the Disco Duck album in about 1977 (I was only 4). We were shopping in Sheffield and we went in the fish market (Castle or Sheaf? I can't remember) and I found a pound note on the floor, so I convinced my mum to take me to Bradley's Records on Pinstone Street, and the album must have been in a bargain bin. My collection then was made up of ex-juke box singles, donations from family and friends, and Mr. Pickwick ep's (anonymous cover versions of chart fodder). Favorite artists in 1977: The Wombles, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Simon and Garfunkel, Bryan Ferry, Sex Pistols and the Howdy Doody Show record. I started buying records properly in 1979, and David Bowie and ELO can be added to the above list for that year!!! First gig: I suppose endless Saturdays in the Working Mens Club accross the road don't count, but I remember one band who were a bit younger and did a more contemporary set. I requested that they do some Roxy and Bowie (written on the back of a used and losing bingo card). They duly played Jealous Guy and Modern Love. And the C&W bands always went down well. BUT, my first gig proper will have been Eric Clapton at Sheffield City Hall in early 1989. He was with Nathan East, Greg Phillingaines and Phil Collins. I'll always remember White Room, as Clapton was about to launch into the solo he hit the wah pedal and out came the sustained feedback, into a blistering solo. I didn't see Bryan Ferry until 1995 in Bournemouth. And I've never walked out of a gig that I've paid for. Although I did have to leave The Cure mid Just Like Heavn in Finsbury Park in 1993 to get the train home. 1. The Gas Board - well, I've just gotta see 'em! 2. David Bowie 1966 3. The Who 1966 at the Marquee 4. Jimi Hendrix anytime in '67 5. The Posies - The Leadmill, Sheffield, 1994 - I was there and it was the best gig I've ever been too. Best and worst Roxy and Ferry coming soon................. Now, as to first concerts, The Beatles at the Newcastle City Hall when I was 8 years old. My Dad gave me his Press ticket and he was recruited to act as a steward for the evening. I had to stand on my seat to see, couldn't hear anything over the screaming (this was '64 full on British Beatle mania)and was partially deaf for a week afterwards. The bit that sticks in my mind was them shaking their little mop top heads and us trying to get down Northumberland Street after the concert. Someone would shout "there's Paul" and a sea of pre-pubescent girls would turn 180degrees and leg it back to the stage door. An unwise punter had parked his Rolls-Royce nearby which was stripped for souvenirs because, of course, it just had to belong to the Beatles. Not quite walked out of a gig but was carried out in '77 from The Stranglers at the Manchester Apollo when I tipped backwards off my seat while attempting to pogo (I don't think I sat down at a gig until the '90's!) Concusion made me a true punk! Oh, time machines; Roxy at the RCA '72 Otis Redding anywhere as well as Monterey Ella Fitzgerald at the Hollywood Bowl Sex Pistols/Buzzcocks at the 100 Club '76 Elvis Live at the recorded Black Leather Suit concert And last but by no means least, a big rousing vibrato chorus of Happy Birthday to yer man Ivor. From _Arena_ (Autumn/Winter 1987): ve this from _Arena_ (Autumn/Winter 1987): "Talking of which [making up tall tales about himself], is it true that you were offered the role of James Bond after Roger Moore?" "My manager was approached, as it happens. I'm not sure how serious they were. I was supposed to go and have a drink with the great Cubby, but I was in the middle of making the last record and I couldn't really see the point. The idea of Bond...it's like Mickey Mouse. Life's too short." "Did you ever like the Bond films?" "Not really. I was always irritated by the detail, the way the suits were cut, the girls they cast, the cheap campness of it all. Move on, John. Give us a break!" "What roles could you imagine yourself playing?" "The Scarlet Pimpernel, definitely. Or Cleopatra, if it was the breakdance version. Richard III is definitely my scene. The sad truth is, I've never really seen myself as the golden hope of the cinema screen, and I'm probably too crazy to direct. Something low-budget maybe...I wouldn't mind the porn version of James Bond, upon consideration." He said playing Bond would be "like playing Mickey Mouse." I don't know if there's any more to the story than that, or how seriously the Bond producers pursued it. (This was when Roger Moore was hanging up the tux. The job eventually went to Timothy Dalton.) Too bad Ferry wasn't asked to do a Bond theme song instead. A collaboration with John Barry might've been interesting. - -----Original Message----- From: Rob Edwards [mailto:robedwards@tinyworld.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, June 08, 2000 12:56 PM To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] 137 e mails 137 e mails later!!!! I also wonder why Mr. Ferry hasn't been approached for a Bond theme song. Bryan's voice and style, James Bond, and silhouettes of naked women dancing: I mean it's so obvious! Wake up you producers you! I was wondering if anyone had seen VH1's the list with the Go-Go's on it. They had a panel for Sexiest Man in music. The really hot Go-go with the black hair(and the talent) picked #3 Beck, #2 Bryan Ferry, #1 Bowie. Unfortunately they all got cut out by the other members. Tasteless cads.
