The difficulty with this whole "bad song" discussion is that it flattens out Ferry--who, obviously is not only a complex artist, but an ironic self-consciously Pop Artist to boot. Fully half of his art is the way his worldview filters the possibilities. Which is an obscure way of saying that intellectual intent--that old PoMo bugaboo--really does need to be given equal weight with the performance of a song or its construction. My further two cents concerning Cry-to-the-Third is that, like it or lump it, it's the culmination of Ferry's facination with ? and the Mysterian's kitch classic, "96 Tears." For years preceding Cry(3) all of that snake keyboard work that followed Ferry's "This way!" signal exclamation, was pretty much a public flirtation with the infectious organ riff in "Tears" I've always seen Cry(3) as Ferry's run at rewriting it, shallow kitch and all. And the fact he seemed impelled to first quote and then overhaul "96 Tears" deserves discussion (both praising and critical) that simple dismissal of the song doesn't allow. And, as long as were on the topic, Cry(3) is one from the "God, Jeri's Left!" basket. As loathe as I am to parade through someone's private life, Ferry is spot-on with Cry(3) as it refers to Hall. A shallow cynical song for a shallow cynical lost love. Call it psychological form-and-function. Try this test: Think of Ms Hall, all breathy and solipsitic, then thing of Cry(3), Kiss And Tell, and "When She Walks in the Room. By this standard, When She Walks In the Room is, by far, the song that misses the mark most widely. I've digressed--the point is, we all seem to revel in the complexity, irony, double-meanings, distance, and pop art stance of Ferry and then proceed to use single dynamics to dismiss pieces of his work: good song, bad performance; lovely vocal, bad choice to cover; etc. I just wish we were all less shape-shifting in making allowances for Ferry in some cases and not in others. Oddly, and , yes, germanely ironic, Duchamp's actual work, The Bride Stripped Bare, was executed on glass. The work was drop in transport and it hangs in Philadelphia to this day with shatter lines running through it. On a simplistic, "Oops,.Broken Painting" level, it's less than good, but . . . Kevin Sheridan >>> kbporte@attglobal.net 06/07/00 08:35AM >>> << >A bad Roxy song? No such thing! No, Cry Cry Cry stinks! >> Yes, on the face of things Cry, Cry, Cry is very juvenile. It's laugh in your face for the sorrows you've caused because what goes around comes around. Spiteful Karma. Holy Grail. And therein lies it's beauty. The tune is young pop, a catchy little number, a bit bazaar, perhaps embarrassing, but easily ironic because it is vindictive, circular rant from an educated adult. Nah nah, nah-nah-nah. Human fragility and weakness juxtaposed social reality? Is that not what some of Roxy was about? I am amused every time Cry, Cry, Cry spins - it makes me laugh! Everyone has their own view on the occasional early Roxy track that doesn't suit their taste (for me Pyjamarama is quite appalling) but what really gets me is the time wasting that goes on in some Lp's eg : loads of ATAP with a pointlessly long You are my sunshine, loads of IYM like All night Operator and Party Doll, Take a Chance with me, Day for Night, Name of the Game, Which way to turn, Seven Deadly Sins, Wildcat Days. I reckon Boys and Girls is so popular because of the consistency of the quality throughout - whereas Bete Noire was so let down by the above mentioned NOTG, SDS, and DFN. The rest was really as good as B&G's. But typically there is a contradiction here - there are many Ferry/Roxy songs that could be longer without dragging them out, although I like the short length of quality tracks like Your Painted Smile, You go to my Head, Sign of the Times, The Main Thing, Zamba. Why is it that The Main Thing is shorter than Take a chance with me ?! - it has a hundred more ideas in it as a track. The first Album I bought was 'Flaming Star' by Elvis Presley. Well, you did yet a free poster with it. I think I actually bought it at Woolworths of all places. They don't seem to have much these days. I also, very embarrassingly admit to buying a Shakin' Stevens single. I think this is my 'claim to shame'. How I loved 'This Old House' and 'Green Door'. I cringe when I here them now. Never mind. I did eventually come to my senses. I do too, but no doubt for different reasons than your own. I think my first purchase with my own money was the Four Seasons single, "Candy Girl" around 1963 (???). For some odd reason, and I would think I'm wrong on this, but the first album I recall buying on my own (and without prior hearing) was "Traffic". An excellent purchase. I've always wondered because the lines that were lost are quite beautiful. Also, this may have been addressed before, but why was Bryan not involved in the "Do They Know it's Christmas" project. Was he invited and decided against it? Thanks all! What was fascinating to me about the record was the buried strands of continuity in it, harkening back not only to the obvious moments like "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "These Foolish Things" but really Ferry's whole body of work. I thought the concert brought this out even more---the '30s stuff meshed surprisingly well with "Sunset," the reworked "Casanova," etc... - -----Original Message----- From: Sebastian Fasthuber [mailto:a9504067@unet.univie.ac.at] Sent: Wednesday, June 07, 2000 2:27 PM To: avalon@smoe.org Subject: [AVALON] the weakest day pardon me, but - peter -why did you even come here, if you dislike a lot of roxy and most of the solo stuff? god, i hope, bryan is not secretly subscribed to the list... what a day sebastian ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! (i also have the picture disc, still in shrink wrap, but that's a different matter.) even though manifesto is clearly not one of the band's finest compositions, it's still worth having, at least for most of side A ('still falls the rain' is my favorite cut). what's more interesting is to compare the original renditions of 'manifesto,' 'trash' and 'angel eyes' with the discofied versions that ferry later whipped up. i actually like the remake of 'manifesto' better than the original, and 'angel eyes' was so completely gutted that it barely sounds like the same song. although i presume you're familiar with the songs on manifesto even if you don't own it. ___________________________________________________________________________ Come to Las Vegas and hear the indestructible tagline sing selections from "The Jazz Singer" ! He didn't add much that we don't already know, eg:his Sat job in a tailor's shop and his monitoring of Ted and Mod fashion as a teenager, moving on to his Uni experience under Richard Hamilton. The interviewer did make the point of asking whether his 'stylishness' was a rebellion against his modest upbringing, but Bry attributed it more to the fact that he was into 'style' through being an art student. The interview was intercut with clips from SL and LITD( I think) and also made the (double-edged, from BF's standpoint)remark that here was someone from the pop world who wasn't a young thing, but still had style! It finished up by saying that BF had a new album out ie ATGB and was soon to embark on a series of Country House concerts. (Apologies; I was unable to tape the interview as I was in the middle of bathing my 3 year old daughter when this came on the radio, so I'll have to leave it to the professionals out there to see if they can get hold of a tape- it only lasted about 3mins). Just thought people would like to know.
