By the end of the song there were streams down both cheeks and >dripping off his jowls. Anyone have any idea why this song moved him so >much?? Well, here's my theory. If you've seen the Brussels video (or maybe been very observant at concerts) when Bryan makes his entrance he's got something in his mouth, probably a lozenge or something to prepare his throat for the performance ahead. By the time he starts singing he should have either finished it or spat it out, but I reckon that in Bristol he forgot, so he kept on sucking, and when he got to Smoke, the lozenge was nearly finished and down to that horible bitter salty taste that some have (I've experienced that with Ricola). This taste was obviously causing some distress, so he chomped the final bit, but accidentaly drew breath at the same time, thus nearly causing him to choke. To prevent that runing the song he restrained himself as best he could, but this actually caused his eyes to water considerably, thus he appeared to be crying. According to a book by Barry Lazell and Dafydd Rees (Proteus Books, 1982), Bryan said in an interview in September 1978, referring to the commercial failure of TBSB: "I'm as good as anyone else currently working in the field of rock music, and better than most, I think. If some people don't realise that, then they must be pretty fucking stupid. Frankly, I'm the most severe critic of my work; no-one is more critical of my work than I am myself. That's why I take so little notice of the so-called critics, who are mostly ill-informed and illiterate idiots.
