Here's the article in mentioned, from the Times Diary of February 12th 2000. May I say that Ms Widdecombe "alternative" looks have earned her the rather unkind sobriquet "Doris Karloff" Walking on hair ANN WIDDECOMBE: fashion icon. The Shadow Home Secretary is being lined up as a model for GQ, the glossy men's magazine. Ms Widdecombe, one of the Tory party's most effective performers, is being groomed for the shoot in recognition of her growing cult status. "We are fantastically interested in this project," says Dylan Jones, the magazine's editor. "Several photographers are lobbying for the job - it is a peach of a commission. We are taking our time deciding who to give it to. She goes in and out of fashion, but I think she's always been something of an icon." "I think that's going a bit far," says Ms Widdecombe briskly. Maybe. But Erin O'Conner, a catwalk model, gave her career a boost by changing her haircut to ape Ann's dyed dark locks, and Bryan Ferry's comely wife, Lucy, recently demanded "a Widdecombe" on a trip to her stylist. Ann adds thoughtfully: "I've never really seen myself in that light, I must say." ___________________________________________________________________________ The indestructible tagline farts in your general direction. Ferry was definitely in a relaxed vein, as he was in Paris, and as he definitely wasn't at the RAH. Perhaps he feels more relaxed on the Continent. Ferry may need to be morose and melancholic to inspire his writing, but when performing, he's at his best with a smile on his face. I loved the way he toyed with the audience before LITD, and the Belgian audience give tremendous vocal support throughout. Well done to Reecey, Andy Mol and all involved. Very slickly done folks. (His partner Miquette Giraudy mind you is more than a little Gaulish). Maybe the confusion is over Gong, who were based in France and had many French band members (Pierre Moerlen, Didier Malherbe, Mireille Bauer etc etc ). BTW... Steve Hillage's current (dance) project is 'System 7' not 'Level 7' (or 'Level 42' for that matter !). French rockers ? Start with the legendary Johnny Hallyday (who gave the world Jimi Hendrix), then add Jean-Jacques (JJ) Goldman (solo and with the fabulous Fredericks, Goldman, Jones), Téléphone (and Jean-Louis Aubert), Blonde Amer, Magma (the legendary Zeuhl band) and the brilliant L'Affaire Louis' Trio. Last but certainly not least, let's not forget the truly sublime Liane Foly, the stunning Patricia Kaas, fusion violinists Jean-Luc Ponty (heir to the Stephane Grapelli throne) and Didier Lockwood, electronic playboy Jean-Michel Jarre... They may not all be internationally known, but they're all great. Regards, Ivor. Oh and for that little smidgen of Roxy-related content - Bill MacCormick and Charles Hayward both separately auditioned for Gong but didn't stay around too long (heavy vibes)... Start with the legendary Johnny Hallyday (who gave the > > world Jimi Hendrix. Johnny Hallyday (France's answer to Elvis Presley - but look who's still rocking !) was already a star in the sixties when Chas Chandler brought the young Hendrix to London to put together a band. A short time after Noel Redding had been recruited (but as yet no drummer had materialised), Johnny Hallyday and his Dad were at a club where Hendrix got up to jam with Brian Auger. Hallyday immediately asked Chandler if Hendrix would play support to him on an upcoming French tour. So it was that the Jimi Hendrix Experience played its first gigs in France as support to Johnny Hallyday. Chas Chandler is on record as saying that Hendrix learned a lot about stagecraft from watching Hallyday work an audience. Knowing that, it's funny to hear Hallyday singing 'Hey Joe' (in French) and think that he was one of the first people ever to hear the Experience play it (the recording wasn't completed until after the Hallyday tour). Steve Hillage is one of my all-time favourites and 'Motivation Radio' is (IMO) his best studio album (although the studio side of 'Live Herald', now part of the 'Open' CD) comes a close second. He manages to be uplifting and upbeat without being cloying or corny and he plays guitar like a good 'un (not unlike a certain Mr Hendrix, although in a different setting). If you like 'MR' I would recommend the 'BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert' and 'Live Herald' CDs ('L', produced by Todd Rundgren, is tremendous too). In a different vein, 'Rainbow Dome Music' is a great meditative, ambient album with cascading synthesisers and waves of guitar echoes, like the light side of (no pussyfooting).
