Dressed in leather, backed by his original trio, and glowing like lightning, Elvis rips into the song with fury (and for once singing the original uncensored lyrics). One of the greatest rock performances ever captured, and one I sincerely doubt Bryan Ferry could ever hope to top. See it before you disagree. Pardon my annoyance, but the combo of Johnny Cash (who recorded his best material at Sun--'Big River,' 'Train of Love' etc) and Bob Dylan was simply abysmal, PARTICULARLY their only-a-hound-dog-could-love version of the otherwise exquisite 'Girl From North County.' The single performance of these guys together I have ever been able to stand is an obscure Dylan original I believe entitled 'I Still Miss Someone,' done at the piano at some point during 'Don't Look Back.' (and even that's half-baked). Two different voices that blend about as well as Martin and Colleen. OK--BETTER than that. And don't get me started on Jerry Lee Lewis, who has (at least until his vocal chords shredded over a decade or so ago) created one of the most impressive bodies of work of all....'She Even Woke Me Up (To Say Goodbye)'...'Meat Man'....'End of the Road'....etc etc Red PS. To whomever asked about the Webb Pierce cut, I know of no site where you can hear it, but you can see him belt it out in an obscure country music film entitled 'From Nashville With Music' which also features Cash (along with the remnants of the Carter Family) and the always-incredible Lefty Frizzell. ___________________________________________________________________________ The indestructible tagline farts in your general direction. You may not like his singing but look at what he writes. His "I threw it all away" . Note all the lyrics of his earlier works, pure genius. Btw, he had a wife named Tara. Ferry's son 's name too. Goodness ... different strokes for different folks, then. Their duet on Girl From The North Country is one of my all-time favorite gems. I find their vocal interplay interesting to listen to, and I love the poignancy of the song itself. In '73 Jerry Lee went to England to record 'The London Sessions,' but the picture looks a few years later than that. Limey longhairs recording with blues/roots guys was a mismatch at best--witness the execrable Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters 'London' creations--but Jerry Lee's ultra-chaotic London affair is a stupendous collection that in its unedited form includes such gems as 'Dungaree Doll,' 'Goldmine in the Sky,' 'Be-Bop-A-Lula,' plus a magnificent 'Memphis' and 'Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee.' Perhaps Lewis felt challenged. After all, it was Jerry Lee's trip to England over a decade earlier that did in his career the first time when the press savaged his marriage to cousin Myra. - --Red I believe a photo of Jerry Lee Lewis with Bryan Ferry is at: http://www.memphisguide.com/music2/sun/sunartists/lewis2.html Mid page. This is a last call for those interested in getting a copy of the Brussels video in NTSC format (North America). Reecey will be sending the PAL video my way within the next few days, including video labels and covers. It'll probably take about a week or so to get it to my friend and for him to transfer it from PAL to NTSC, and then we're off to the races making copies for everyone. The total cost is still to be advised: the tape itself is $3.00, plus mailing of $3.20 (in USA). Still to be added is the cost of the video case, plus a pro-rated share of Reecey's costs for the labels, covers, mailing, & misc. costs at his end which I'm reimbursing to him. In order to figure out the pro-rated portion fairly, it's important to try to catch a final tally. Then I can calculate the total cost & let everyone know how much to send per video copy. IF you are ALREADY on my list for the USA video format, (and if I did the group list correctly), you should also get a bcc: of this e-mail. Anyone else interested in getting in on this: please contact me directly as soon as possible, with your full name and mailing address. Thanks alot.
