Clarvis is an unusual percussionist with a real sense of humour. He played standing up and, armed with but a single snare, a small kick drum, two cymbals (one crash, one ride) and various brushes/sticks/shakers he proceeded to play everything *with* everything else, including the drum stands - no rules ! On several occasions he was to be seen balancing (just !) on one leg, kicking out at a string of bells with the other, while dragging a shaker across the ride cymbal and brushing the snare with a bundle of sticks, not unlike a good-humoured Jamie Muir. Just the early year, I think, 1955 Sun Recordings. In the swing/blues area, I would be partial to "That's All Right", Good Rockin' Tonight", or "Baby, Let's Play House". For other Sun Recordings of Elvis I would be partial to "I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin')", "That's When Your Heartaches Begin", or "It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You". I'm sure BF would do a fine rework of any of the above titles, and with his talent of interpretation the results could be phenomenal. We'll just have to wait and see. I think I have found another closet Avalonian, too: on my occasional trips to the local Home Depot (a monstrously large hardware store, for those of you who don't live near one of these) I have noticed a smattering of BF/RT material on the in house sound system. Usually relatively innoccuous songs like "Oh Yeah," or "Over You" . Sometimes more daring things like "Kiss and Tell." But today, as I was buying zip cord for a show (Tony Kushner's "The Illusion" at the Piven Theatre in Evanston, if you care) I heard "Hula Kula". Yes, on an in store sound system! So, BPhilipson, do you work at the Evanston Home Depot? The first appearence, I think, by name brand musicians.
