The promo video for the Royal Festival Hall arrived this morning, I and I have viewed it a few times. It has three tracks, Falling in Love Again, Out Of The Blue and Let's Stick Together. The credits are for Virgin Schallplatten GmbH (the German distribution arm of Virgin's empire, and the same point of release as As Time Goes By.) Sound quality is Hi-Fi standard, and exceptionally good. I was a little disappointed by the video for two reasons. Firstly the editing seemed a little amateur, problems with focussing and the like. The whole production had the feel of a superior home movie, although I appreciate that this could be a very early cut. Gut instinct - I felt that this is more likely a TV rendering than something which will appear as a commercial video. As for the content, there was a lot of emphasis of Ferry and the girls (of course) with a great sustained shot of Lucy Wilkins doing the OOTB violin solo. Only very brief glimpses of the others, and I don't think Nils Solberg featured at all. Secondly though, I felt that the film failed to capture the astonishing atmosphere abroad in the auditorium that night. It was a little like watching a soccer match without the crowd noise. Slightly surreal. Good performances by all though, especially Ferry. At the end he joked "Smile, you're being filmed!" And finally, the kicker. I was able to pick out three UK Avalonians during the intro to LST. Johnny Reece makes an immaculate approach to the stage, knocking a number of old ladies and small children out of his path. The urbane Richard Swift makes a notable appearance (such are the advantages of being 8' 3") as his albatross arms clap along to the music. Finally my humble self is clearly visible in the foreground. Avalonians are finally enshrined in Ferry folklore! There is a wonderful moment at the end of Out Of The Blue when Lucy Wilkins, having a thing something of beauty from her instrument (Martino called this the most exciting moment in 27 years of Ferry-watching), stands almost unaware of the achievement. The pouting look on her face could have adorned any Roxy album cover. I really look forward to a fuller version of this tape, particularly Carrickfergus, Casanova and Street Life which all went down big on the night. I've also spotted a couple more Avalonians in the crowd. There is a clear view of Andy Cooper, a shot of Martino lurking in the gloom, and, I think I spotted Richard Jones too.
