After Saturday's get-together, I feel they're all precious (well OK maybe not 'Cry, Cry, Cry'), but here goes: 1. One Roxy/Ferry song ? 'Beauty Queen'. Mind you I'd be really upset not to have 'Out of The Blue' in my back pocket and the Viva! versions of 'Pyjamarama' (now playing and the world may keep us far apart but...sigh !) and 'If There Is Something' (those solos !). Martin, you really have to go back and listen to this album again, no, REALLY ... 2. One song, not Roxy/Ferry related: Probably 'Starless' by King Crimson (from 'Red') - guaranteed lump in the throat (I don't really understand why - but then, you don't ask why, do you ?) 3. If you had to choose the best Roxy/Ferry song clone, ever, what would it be? Easy - Japan 'Ghosts'. A cliché ? perhaps, but I was taken aback the first time heard it. Regards, Ivor. n.p. Viva ! I found "The Cream of Cockney Rebel" at Amazon.com and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. Someone mentioned discovering Cockney Rebel through Duran Duran's cover of "Come Up and See Me." This was also my first taste of the Cockney Rebel, way back in the seventh grade! In fact, I owe my devotion to Roxy and Bryan to the members of Duran, who always listed them as influences and who as a consequence awoke my curiousity. Fortunately for me I had a Roxy mentor at my high school job who helped me delve deeper into Roxy than just "Avalon." I remember that album sitting unsold in my local record shop for years - I think it was the cover that put people off. I am now led to understand there was something more experimental going on with that album - maybe it's worth revisiting. But I remain an unreconstructed loather (is there such a word ?) of New Romantics in general. The early 80s was not a good time for me musically. ABSeedy, Durham Durham, Spandex Ballet, Culture Clutz (great autobiography though, George) - all of it empty and artificial. At least people like Gary Numan and Ultravox had good choons and seemed to care about their music rather than their clothes (I seriously loved Midge Ure's version of 'No Regrets'). Oh well, all styles etc etc... Regards, Ivor. n.p. I can see it now, hordes of Avalonians dressed a-la Steve Strange, hurtling empty mascara tins at the electro rockers and Numanoids on the other side, standing motionless, android and ice cool. Let battle commence. I'm with the Numanoids. When the original Reproduction line-up split, Oakey took the name and went on to conquer galaxies. The other two, Ian Craig-Marsh and Martin Ware formed the BEF, (British Electronic Foundation) an offshoot of which was Heaven 17, where the two, augmented by a singer, had a few interesting moments - At The Height Of The Fighting, Come Live With Me and particularly Temptation, a great dance-floor favourite. Their other big idea was to make an album where a series of guests sang familiar songs over a backdrop of their electronic squeaks, burps and squiddly bits, Paul Jones of Manfred Mann did 'There's a Ghost In My House' I remember, and I think the Temptations did 'Ball of Confusion'. One of the invited guests was a spectacularly out of favour Tina Turner, unheard of for 10 years. Their version of Let's Stay Together' with Heaven 17 as backing relaunched my Auntie Tina to the charts and eventual world domination, whilst they returned to anonymity. Like I say, they have a lot to answer for... However, apparently seaside locations such as Chichester, and Bognor, aren't that far, (20 miles ?). Anyone interested in a load of us heading down there afterwards ? I guess if there's a few cars heading that way then a load of us could do it. (A special prize goes to the person who manages to find a 'Sea Breezes' Guest House). It's a Saturday next day, so many would probably not be working. Just a thought. An 'Avalonia by the seaside' Saturday lunch type situation, chewing the cud of the night before. A quick lunch and the odd beer before heading homewards. Or, if we're feeling particularly decadent, an ice cream. Mine's a double 99, (one Vanilla, one Chocolate), two flakes, mixed nuts and lashings of raspberry sauce. Thoughts ? (on the idea, not necessarily the ice cream). The Associates became a little bit of a substitute for Roxy in the in-between years for me. My favourite being Breakfast (all strings and wistful longings, but terrible lyrics). I was mortified when Billy Mckenzie committed suicide as he's just released his best album for ages. Billy and Andy Mac shared a passion for whippets.
