Prior to Saturday, I had only been to Scott's a grand total of maybe five times but every time it was to see the legendary Art Blakey. I always felt Blakey WAS Ronnie Scott's...a great man, sadly missed. The number of big names that came through Art's Jazz Messengers over the years is a roll call of the very finest: Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard to name but a few... I'll never forget Art drumming on our table once as he went past. He muttered something to my friend who smiled back and said 'Yeah !'. 'What did he say ?' I asked. 'Haven't the faintest idea, but that was Art Blakey and who am I to disagree ?' came the reply... Re-make/Re model the Dutch Roxy tribute band was playing in a small cafe. First we had a meeting with some people I only knew from the net, telephone or a quick talk after Ferry's concert in Amsterdam. Always nice to meet people with a taste almost as good as your own. And then Re Make/Re model. You won't believe your ears. What a sound!!! O.k the musicians are not as good as Paul, Phil, Bryan, Brian and Andy and John but as a whole they are fantastic! The saxplayer is so incredible good that when he played with Bryan as a stand-in for Andy nobody would complain, no joke! Ron has a very powerful voice. Although his voice isn't exact the same as Bryan, he has a very powerful voice that works very good on numbers like Street Life, Mother of Pearl and the Strand. One minor problem he cannot whistle, at the end of Jealous Guy he started to hmmm but one of the people in the audience took over Ferry's role and then we heard the longest whistle-solo in the history of BF. The guy refused to give back the mike. The drummer have the same power as Paul, very dry, straight sound, definitely not an Andy Newmark. But he plays a better Out of the Blue then John Sutton. Our imitation Brian has the same hairdresser as the real one and played his part very well, A little problems with his keyboard in In Every dream home but more important he was able to recreated all those weird sounds of the first two albums. What a wonderful Virginia Plain he did! The Guitar player was a more early seventies Rock orientated sound, In my opinion a bit too much. (but I'm more a Hubbard fan then a Phil fan..Sorry) The played about 25 songs mostly Roxy from the early period some Ferry songs. The set had the same construction as what we expect from a Roxy/Ferry concert: the beginning with the more difficult and slower songs and the end party time with Do the strand, editions, Re make etc... My favourites were the in'crowd, Price of love which they gave there own extraordinary twist and Prairie Rose. All the songs were done very very well. Beautiful My only love Btw. If there will be an Avalonmeeting on a lager scale somewhere (London?) in the future it would be a good idea to asked them to play! Han John, what a story, tears in my eyes! Indeed Brilliant! My favourite part was the sorry about those switches next to the paintings. In fact, I owe my devotion to Roxy and Bryan to the members of Duran, who always listed them as influences and who as a consequence awoke my curiousity. Fortunately for me I had a Roxy mentor at my high school job who helped me delve deeper into Roxy than just "Avalon." (Hi Rick!) Also, the recent royalties discussion mentioned the use of "The In Crowd" in a Blockbuster ad. The ad ran for a very short time so Bryan did not get as much as you might think. The review can be found in the SHOWCASE Section of the Chicago Sun-Times Wednesday May 10 edition. You can access the Sun-Times at http://www.suntimes.com. Way to go Andrew. I intend on seeing it in the very near future. He was also involved in the lighting design for a very influential fashion show here featuring local designers a few weeks ago ( front page new!). The lighting design that he used was influenced by the lighting that was the backdrop for Bryan's show here in November. Andrew remembered the lighting because of the photos that I took during the concert. I'm glad my crappy photos were put to good use. :)))) Jas - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 08:00:13 +0100 From: Terry Lane Subject: RE: [AVALON] One Song , and ONLY one song, DID thread-fest 1.
