Is he or isn't he? I've asked before, how much is a put-on. "You'll never know babe, the state I'm in." I don't think of BF as morose, but I am unable to attribute his lyrics to a happy-go-lucky, light-hearted individual. (Sorry, I just can't resist this.) - In any event, if Bryan Ferry was a bundle of laughs, he'd be a comedian! I really loved the line, "Throughout, he reels round the stage, posing and beadily eyeballing the women (including those in the string section) like a trellis-climbing suitor who has crashed the nunnery Christmas party." On the bootleg "Song for Europe" (GRD CD 9016) of 1990 David Skinner has been credited. That's all I could find in my collection at this moment. Several gloomy songwriters are actually very light hearted and funny in real life, or onstage. Richard Thompson, who refers to his songs as "doom and gloom" is warm and charming and very funny in person. Ditto Tom Waits. And Arvo Part (though admittedly, that is a very different scene.) And although I am too young to know this first hand, I have been told that Nick Drake was warm and freindly and funny in person. At least early on..... Happy mothers day! Of course, everyone was a star, but special merit badges are in order for: John O'Brien for making such a sterling effort to be there and for outstanding contributions in the field of socialising (and, not least, for staying the course - what happened to all you wussy southerners, eh ??? S;^) ) A Christian Wainwright Bursery goes to: Martino who, despite sub-saharan temperatures, was an iceberg in full 'David Nixon' stylee with cravat, blush chemise and...shorts ?? (Fortunately the standard of catering was sufficient to overcome any subsequent lack of appetite in his fellow diners...) Johnny Reece for managing to keep smiling and putting up with an unexpected visitor in the wee small hours... Simon Galloway for organising the whole bangshoot at considerable cost to his nerves...played, sir ! Andrew Shearer for driving all that way, only to be sober in the face of mounting cross-examination from Martino on various burning issues of the day... Chris Turner for...erm...you were very quiet down that end of the table, you know, Chris ? (or was it just that we had wor Jocelyn oop our end, like ??) A special gold watch goes to Jocelyn Fiske for demanding proper standards of service in the matter of cups of tea (and bottles of the house white...did anyone keep a count ?) After the festivities had ended (and just before the local constabulary arrived) we fled scattering into the night. Now reduced to a hardcore of four (Jocelyn, Martin, Johnny, John and yours truly) and being the dedicated clubbers we are (...OK, it was Jocelyn's idea...) we piled into Ronnie Scott's for a swift pint of overdraft and a second set from veteran vibes-meister Roy Ayers during which Martino's homing instinct took over and he migrated north for the evening. Succumbing to the inevitable at three a.m. we taxi'ed off in our various directions. Unfortunately for me, a complicated sequence of events with taxis and closed stations resulted in me getting home at seven o'clock this morning in broad daylight, bleary-eyed and considerably lighter of wallet but all the richer for an evening spent in very good company (all together now, ahhhhh...) I would like to declare the evening an unequivocal success ! So, Jocelyn, when's the next one ?? Sincerely, Ivor. BTW What time is it now, Jocelyn ?
