Eno? Mullet? He's never had enough hair to achieve that incredible style. Andy Mackay is obviuosly the main offender though. But what I don't understand is this fascination with mullets - tv shows, books, magazine articles all dedicated to a hairdo that should have been made extinct the moment Lou Reed thought it was cool. Even he recently admitted that it was a mistake. It didn't stop him though, or Bowie, last seen sporting said style in 1987 (not the only mishap that year then). Agreed, but my favorites are the 5 albums he/they put out between 68 and 70, just some really enjoyable acoustic nonesense. Electric Warrior was definitely the peak though, and what a generous collection of b sides he did too. The alternate version of The Slider (called Rabbit Fighter) I find very enjoyable too. They help give a more rounded perspective to the discussion, some things to think about. Bryan Ferry's ATGB is a "safer" album (potentially it has more appeal to a broader audience than his earlier work), but none the less, it is a very good piece of work for that genre. When compared to something as unconventional as, say, Mamouna, it is difficult to fault ATGB - it doesn't raise eyebrows or have an obvious impact. Mr. Ferry's earlier work was always easier to criticize because of it's "foreign" nature, where as ATGB is more "native" music that we have all heard before: Perhaps its very mundaneness doesn't provoke criticism. The Police was a favored band. Too bad Sting split. I don't care for his solo work. Best wishes. Suddenly I'm heartened to find that the first album is only two-thirds of the way through, and 3 people have already asked what it is. Nice to see a 27 year old album getting that reaction. If only it was still available ! Re the Glam comps - i've made many over the years too. Funnily enough, I always left Roxy off mine as I didn't think they should have gone under that banner, much as I loved the whole fun/music thing of the genre. Remember when the first 'Glam Rock' video came out ? All the pre-publicity it got, and on the track listing - was Virginia Plain. By the time it actually came out - the track had been removed, replaced by a 2nd Wizzard track instead. EG or someone similar not wanting it on there, methinks ? I watched some of that stuff recently. Mr. Glitters TOTP appearances were wonderfully over the top, especially 'I Love You Love Me Love' - if you haven't seen it, boy have you missed out - brilliant, but hilarious too. 'Blockbuster' was always one of my first choices for a Comp like this, though basically it's exactly the same guitar line as Jean Genie. Which came first ? Bowie by some 5 weeks... Another fave - great record, shame about the artist - is 'My Coo Ca Choo' - good old Alvin Stardust. ANORAK TRIVIA SPOT WARNING : Alvin didn't actually sing on it - he mimed all the appearances of this one. It was actually a guy called Peter Shelley who made the record (who didn't want to do the whole 'Glam image thing') who later had a couple of stomach-churning hits himself, 'Gee Baby', and 'Love Me Love My Dog. Sorry to burst your bubble, Alvin fans. Must admit though, Coo-Ca-Choo was a classic piece of glam pop though. And on the subject of V. This from the CNN site: That coveted CD of Britney Spears' warblings will now be $2 to $5 cheaper at a music store near you. The music biz's Big Five -- Sony, Bertelsmann, EMI, Universal and Time Warner (corporate cousin to this web site) -- which control 85 percent of the $15 billion CD market, settled with the FTC Wednesday on charges that they've been leaning for years on music retailers to fix CD prices by threatening to withhold promotional budgets from stores that don't adhere to a so-called "minimum advertised price" (MAP). The three-year price-fixing binge, according to FTC chairman Robert Pitofsky, cost consumers a total of $480 million. The MAP programs will now cease, and teen-idol fans will now have more money in their piggy banks. It was already bad enough that huge places like Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart, etc all sold cds for below our COST because they are able to buy in such huge quantities...now there is nothing to stop other stores from selling for lower prices than were previously possible. This whole business is quite a mess, what with the Sony/hyperlink lawsuit, MAP programs and napster. I don't know how anyone is supposed to survive as an independent business owner these days, especially in the music industry. It's pretty depressing! I guess I see it from a different side...it's not hurting consumers.
