My response to something like this is to go out and buy a Greatest Hits/Best Of type compilation, because at least that way there'll be a couple of songs that you know, songs that you know but you say "I didn't know they did that", and generally makes a good introduction. I did that with Steve Harley, a cellection called "The Cream of Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel", it's an EMI mid price cd, which also means that you aren't out of pocket too much. I've just found it online at www.hmv.co.uk for a very reasonable £5.49. Track listing as follows: 1. Make me smile (come up and see me) 2. Judy teen 3. Here comes the sun 4. I believe Love's a prima donna 5. Best years of our lives 6. Another journey 7. Freedom's prisoner 8. Tumbling down 9. Mr Raffles man it was mean 10. Roll the dice 11. Psychomodo 12. Mr Soft 13. White white dove 14. Sebastian 15. Love compared with you 16. I can't even touch you Tumbling Down is a most exquisite song, but for a full Steve Harley appreciation I now hand over to Reecey....are you there? SimonG >>> "Amy Bettisworth" 05/09 3:57 pm >>> Simon, You mention Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel in your Glam compilation. I've been thinking of investing in an album by these guys. Of course, being in the states all I can find is imports. Is it worth the investment? The only song I'm familiar with is "Come up and See Me (Make me Smile)", which I love. Thanks for the input! Which is nice. It's probably got a fair bit to do with the fact that he's always been good, though. If someone less good (take, for a completely random example, Sting) is still around at Bryan's age, he probably won't get treated with such respect, basically because he's never done anything so interesting. The Police were quite good, but they weren't leaders like Roxy - they were probably to punk what Shed Seven were to Britpop, i.e. another less good band that got some publicity just because of the movement. - -- Laura - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 18:52:02 +0100 From: "Laura Shadbolt" Subject: Re: [AVALON] New Tangent - Lists > Date: Sun, 7 May 2000 21:44:15 -0700 > From: "eman96" > Subject: [AVALON] New Tangent - Lists > > Okay, sometimes I get rutted in my Roxy/Ferry/Japan/Sylvian glaze... > > So here's a challeng to willing list stalwarts -- ala the dj and top tens > lists... > > I want suggestions for music I should pursue/buy. > > Two variations. > > List 1: If you like Bryan Ferry, You Must Listen To... > > Which means I wont want to strangle you if I just go out and buy your > suggestion/s sight unheard. Some suggestions: Jeff Buckley - "Grace" (the album for which the phrase "hauntingly beautiful" was perhaps coined) Suede - "Suede" or "Dog Man Star" (the latter is spookier. Both are usually likened to the Smiths and David Bowie) Pulp - "His and Hers" ("Different Class" is better known, but H&H is my favourite and probably more Roxyish) That's all I can think of, so anyone else can feel free to agree or disagree. The Police were quite good, but they weren't leaders like > Roxy - they were probably to punk what Shed Seven were to Britpop, i.e. another Huh? The reason Ferry's not been a target for criticism because _As Time Goes By_ is an innocuous easy-listening type record which has been reviewed by middle-aged music critics. It's not like it's getting glowing reviews all across the music spectrum--there are a number of very high profile music rags where it has NOT been mentioned. Sometimes omission is as important as submission. As for the tour, well, he's a fantastic live performer. And I'd also wager that without the judicious insertion of a number of Roxy and solo chestnuts, those live reviews would have taken a different slant as well. With respect to The Police, while I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan, I would strongly disagree that they were not leaders. If you want to play that game where leaders are people almost no one has heard of, fine, but here in the rest of the world leaders are people who have a impact and The Police had a HUGE impact on popular music. Maybe not on punk music, but then again they were never a punk act. (_Nota Bene_: This is not meant to start yet another long, dull off-topic thread, this one about what constitutes a "punk act" which splits hairs 1843745754 ways. Who cares?) I think that this off topic discussion could be summed up as thus, while both Americans and the English can drink to excess very proficiently, the social mores and conventions related to alchohol do differ depending which side of the ocean you're on. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 13:36:29 -0400 (EDT) From: "Colleen J. (sorry - bit late on coming in on this thread...). And here we are, some 27 years after the bands triumphant debut - and what do we have ? A host of 'hits' compilations, which, frankly, tell us virtually nothing of their creativity or style. The first 2 Albums are what you really need to get to the 'heart' of Cockney Rebel, ('Human Menagerie' and 'The Psychomodo') but tricky to track down on CD now. Worth getting the vinyl though, if you can find it - there are some real gems in there. Mr. Harley and his chums didn't make a bad album - though they'll admit themselves they changed styles dramatically over the years. 'Timeless Flight' (a further few years down the line) is a classic - slammed by critics as 'innacessible' at the time, as they assumed Steve would follow up the vastly overplayed 'Make Me Smile' with another catchy little ditty. But Steve had other ideas... Catch them if you can... As for the recent chit-chats back and forth about T.Rex, I must admit some rather blinkered opinions genuinely made me laugh. I was a huge Bolan fan, (only Roxy knocked him off his perch, for me) but some people seem to think that 'Metal Guru' or 'Telegram Sam' are what he was all about. Wrong ! This man/Band sold Millions of albums, much of which contain very little resemblance to those Singles. Check out 'Electric Warrior', and to a lesser extent, 'The Slider'. 'Tanx' is good too, and a brave move by Mr. Bolan at the time - an album release in 73 that he insisted 'no singles at all' be taken from. Then, the slide from grace. Bad vocals, bad ideas from Gloria Jones, Herbie Flowers, and a host of session musicians who really shouldn't have been involved, the leaving of a drugged up Mickey Finn, the left over scars from the break-up of Bolans marriage and Bolan beginning to believe his own publicity, and the descent into drugs by Bolan signalled the big slide. A brief comeback with a tune stolen lock, stock and barrel from an old 50s bluesman called Webb Pierce ('Teenage Boogie' which became 'I Love To Boogie') was cut short by his death in a car crash. I didn't find out until years later that 'Jeepster' was nicked from Howlin' Wolf ! Still, at least he didn't make a career out of nicking whole Albums of stuff like Zeppelin did. Whoops ! On my high horse again. This was meant to be about Cockney Rebel. If your only way in is through a compilation, then that's what it'll have to be. But you're getting so, so little of the story... Reecey... - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 12:08:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Noam Bronstein Subject: [AVALON] Re: Black Beauty Ms. Matan a ecrit: > Besides, it's not as bad as Canada. The worldwide release of the "Slave To Love" compilation is on schedule for July. The artwork is pretty much the same although the fonts will be different and some of the text inside has been 'tidied up'. The track listing has a slightly different running order and at least a couple of tracks will be different to the Swedish release - one will be a previously unreleased song. (If any collectors want to invest in the Swedish version given it's different to the upcoming release I'd again endorse Key Mail Order - I got my copy for £13.99 inc P&P but saw the CD in HMV Manchester this week for £19.99). The Roxy early years release is still scheduled for an August release tying in with the BBC Drama series "Street Life". Jim also saw a couple of questions posted here recently but hasn't had an opportunity to post a reply. Someone asked who played drums when Roxy played Dortmund in 1980, premiering their version of "Jealous Guy". It was Michael Dawe who used to be Robert Palmer's resident drummer. I think Jim said he played on the recorded version but the rest of the line up outside of the Roxy trio was Dave Skinner on piano and Gary Tibbs on bass. The second question Jim had an answer to was who appeared on sax when Roxy performed "Over You" on Top Of The Pops? This was Howie Casey who used to play sax for Paul McCartney and Wings and also Mott the Hoople. Andy couldn't appear as he was on holiday at the time.
