(btw: if I'm not wrong, I recall having seen Tim Finn listed among BF's musicians, but I don't remember in which CD. Does anyone know more?) This is the message I posted to the ng and its follow-ups. CECILIA: : Hi everybody, : I'm new to the list and I have a question which hopefully isn't well-explored territory. : In one of the past messages I read about a Manzanera production of Split Enz. Is it the same Phil Manzanera who played with Roxy Music in the 80s? : Thank you : Ciao : Cecilia PETER: It is Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. He saw Split Enz in Oz during one of Roxy Musics Tours (they may even have been the support act) and really liked them and offerred to produce their next album. The resulting album was called Second Thoughts in Australia and Mental Notes internationally. It included four songs from the original mental notes (Stranger than Fiction, Time For A Change, Walking Down A Road and Titus) plus Late Last Night, Lovey Dovey, Sweet Dreams, Matinee Idyll and The Woman Who Loves Me. In my opinion it's a better album than the original Mental Notes. Certainly the production is much better and the mix is clearer. CHRIS: It's also worth noting (ok, it's a side note) that Tim and Neil sang on Manzanera's album 'K-Scope'. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Jarvis Cocker himself wants to be a sleazy Scott Walker, but the sound of Pulp, especially around Different Class has several Roxy references, not least the soaring synth of Common People bearing a similarity to Virginia Plain. Not to be confused, of course, with the very dead rock'n'roll pioneer Eddie Cocker... As someone who's a reasonably big Pulp fan (got all their stuff, been following them since '94), I would say that the Roxy connection is very tenuous, to be honest. There are some basic similarities - the vague air of decadance (and sometimes kitsch), the occasional use of wobbly electronics, the presence of a certain kind of intelligent conceptual edge whilst remaining totally pop - but I think that's about as much as they share. The influence of Americana on Roxy isn't something to which Pulp have ever aspired, and Jarvis' lyrics (which I think at their best can be on a qualitative par with Bryan at his best) are written from a very different angle, taking a much more direct stance. Thanks to all who replied to my glam poll. I appreciate your input. Simon mentioned being inspired by Velvet Goldmine to make a glam comp, which is funny, because that is exactly how I got the idea. VG is an admittedly fictional look at the scene back then, but I was impressed at the use of Roxy & Eno in the soundtrack. I never would've thought of Baby's On Fire as a stadium rocker. And as Simon mentioned, I am in search of some of the "darker" side of glam. I was a teen myself back in the heyday of glam. I got my copies of Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs for free when I first subscribed to Creem magazine. Living in Kansas, though, I was never exposed much to the music through the radio. Just bought records by bands I read about in Creem, Rock Scene, Circus, etc. The reason I asked for your opinions was to see what bands I may have forgotten about, or never even heard because of my location. Here are some of my picks: Roxy - Ladytron, Grey Lagoons, Beauty Queen Eno - Needle in the Camel's Eye, Baby's On Fire, Dead Finks Slade - We're All Crazee, Gudbuy t'Jane Sparks - At Home, At Work, At Play Alice Cooper - Eighteen, Under My Wheels Lou - Andy's Chest, Vicious Mott - Rock n Roll Queen Something by Mick Ronson, if I can ever find any Bowie - Something from Pinups, Ziggy, Alladinsane Iggy - I Need Somebody Dolls - Personality Crisis, Lookin' for a Kiss, Vietnamese Baby, Frankenstein Speaking of Frankenstein, Edgar Winter got glammy there for a minute, didn't he? :) I seem to recall Sensational Alex Harvey Band being pretty cool. Would also like to hear some Cockney Rebel. Thanks again to those who helped. Thank you, Simon, for posting your compilation list. David Mock, I'd be interested in seeing yours, too (thanks for reminding me about Be Bop Deluxe). I had tried Guinness in he early 80's. Hated it. Does that mean that I won't bond with Bryan should I have a chance meeting with him? I like fishing though. I like Heineken and Amstel now (Hallo Han). Oh yes, I know some will hate this( Hi Kim!!!) but our favorita, Ms. Jeri Hall was on a U. S. television program tonight- Just Shoot Me. She played the best/good friend of one of the show's main characters- a model turned fashion editor. Tonight's segment was a take off on the A & E show BIOGRAPHY. Jeri was interviewed detailing her friendship with the model over the years. It was funny (to me) and Jeri looked fab. Even the Texas accent was there-although clipped a bit. Nice to see her working. She has mouths to feed you know- her kids of course.
