At 53, Ferry looks dapper and debonaire - bet your dad wouldn't look so cool in leather trousers. From his early days fronting Roxy Music, Ferry has always had a passion for glitzy cabaret and smoky jazz, but now he can indulge his tastes without having to keep tongue in rouged cheek. Backed by an onstage orchestra, Ferry delivered a mix of show tunes, solo songs and early Roxy Music hit, blending each era together in a seamless, stylish revue. Tunes from his current covers album, As Time Goes By, showcased Ferry's timeless quality, and he handled the intricacies of Falling In Love Again and Just One Of Those Things with masterful skill; the stunning (in more ways than one) string section added pizazz to the proceedings, while the brass section kept everything in the swing. It was weird to watch old session musicians reading off Roxy Music songs such as Out Of The Blue, Avalon, and Love Is The Drug, but at least the bass player sounded like a natural rocker beneath the monkey suit. Ferry built up a fine portrait of an accomplished songwriter and stylist. One of the show's magic moments came when Ferry performed his cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy, imbuing the song with his own personality, and probably eliciting some envy from the direction of rock 'n' roll Heaven. Let's Stick Together, in contrast, was your run of the mill rock workout, but it brought the audience to its feet, and gave the girls in the string section a chance to whoop and holler a la Jerry Hall. Ferry chose to end the show with one of Roxy Music's more offbeat tunes, Do The Strand. This brash dancehall pastiche gave the whole orchestra free rein to whip up a riotous finale, and gave Ferry one last chance to play the lounge lizard." Kevin Courtney A Ferry interview also appeared in last Sunday's (Irish) News Of The World. He spoke at length about his passion for cycling, how it could easily have been his career, how he loves to watch the Tour De France every year, and his admiration for once great Irish cyclists Stephen Roache and Sean Kelly. He discussed his love for Ireland, particularly Galway and Cork. One local Galway man talked about how Bryan always comes into the bar for a few pints of Guinness, after a days fishing, in his wellies and overalls. He's always very pleasent and welcome. Bryan also talked (in his usual vague terms) about his marriage, which he says is constantly "on and off". Finally to Mark - "the black stuff" = Guinness. Bryan was drinking Guinness after last weeks show. Regards, Gareth. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 May 2000 17:11:11 +0100 From: "Robert Whiteford" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Irish review & interview For a guy who in a lot a ways is an easy target for criticism because he's 54, singing 30's songs, and not had a hit in 7 years the reviews of both the album and tour have been really fair and incredibly positive. Not even press hostile to Ferry or his lifestyle have been able to knock his music. I have to say I'm a little surprised at the number of people on here who aren't that impressed with ATGB - it's all opinion I know - but I reckon this is his most creative output in ages and his most emotional since the Bride Stripped Bare. 'K-Scope' is, as its name suggests, a reflection and refraction of the changing musical times in which it was conceived. Splashes of reggae ('Cuban Crisis'), punk ('Remote Control') and even disco ('Hot Spot') were all Manzaneered in his own inimitable fashion. In those uncertain times for musicians with more than three chords to their name, he weathered the storm by harnessing the best elements of that storm on this album. For me, it's the instrumentals ('KScope', 'N-Shift' and 'You Are Here') and the quieter songs ('Gone Flying') which really benefit from the remastering, with more dynamic range and depth than I remember them having. I am finding new layers in the arrangements, with guitar lines I've never heard before popping up out of nowhere. The difficulty now is finding tracks that are less than superb. Only 'Numbers' (even with its 'CPL593H' quote) is disappointing (sorry, guys but Messrs Wetton, Manzanera and Phillips are a dream team and nothing less than brilliant will do !). 'Walking Through Heaven's Door' is still my favourite song from this album though and could have been a lost 'Listen Now !' track with its opening slow-motion night scenes of rain-washed airport runways, paranoia and hopes of escape from unnamed horrors. When Bill MacCormick sings 'This is it, now we're here at last ' I now get digitally remastered goosepimples ! Of course the vision of a better life turns out to be a dystopian nightmare not unlike a certain dream home heartache... This, followed beautifully by the darkly reflective 'You Are Here', is worth the price of admission alone. Of the extra 'Phillers', the live versions of 'Remote Control' and 'Out Of The Blue' from 1977 are both from the '801 Live At Manchester University' album but have been so well spruced up (remastered *and* remixed ?) that they take on a whole new lease of life, better balanced and punchier than before (once again, where did that bass come from ?). The demo of 'It Don't Matter To Me' (later, the Stranglers-esque 'Slow Motion TV') is interesting in having the cool voice of Simon Ainley in place of the more mannered Tim Finn - more work-in-progress tunes and demos, please !! Finally, top marks to Phil for the additional sleevenotes. The anecdote about Chris Squire's awards gave me a warm glow of remembrance from my own brief visit to Gallery Studios looking up at MY hero's gold and platinum discs on the wall. My advice ? 'Sit back relax and dream - this is the future, this is tomorrow's scheme'...er...on second thoughts, better not ! Some thoughts on 'Primitive Guitars' later... This is an American pressing, probably by TMQ who released boots under many different labels to keep the "law" off their trail. (Toasted Records, Saturated, Kornyphone, Pharting Pharaohs, Suma, Shogun, Screaming Wazzo etc...just to name a few). Also, it was common for them to associate these labels with other countries to further confuse the law...and it worked. These guys were never caught and now have a legitimate and quite respected record label. (any guesses?) Several people on the list have this boot but it`s never been offered for a Tree. I own a copy of "Real Cool Time" (No 659 of 500 numbered copies...). The record label is Rentner records (not Prentner). RR 002. I like the cover of this record very much. Bryan seems very relaxed as he is having his Guinness (?), talking to two local pub visitors. Does anyone know where the picture was taken? My guess would be in a British or Irish pub in the countryside. Unfortunately the sound quality of the record will not give you a real cool time. It is really bad and probably the worst of any Roxy Music / Ferry bootleg I have heard. Ferry´s voice sounds like it is coming from very far away, almost as if he´s singing through a telephone. It is a pity as the record contains songs not very often heard on bootlegs from this time (Amazona, Grey Lagoons, Ladytron and Psalm). Until recently my collection consisted mainly of Bryan's solo work.
