ISTR Bryan appearing on TOTP in 1978 performing What Goes On with a (miming) backing band that appeared to include some (if not all) of the musicians from the band that appeared on Rock Follies. Certainly a balding, bearded guitarist playing a Gibson Flying V. Does anyone else remember this, or did I dream it? On the subject of dreams, Green Gartside (Scritti Politti) and John Cale appeared in dreams on consecutive nights last week and made remarks intimating I should loose weight. Undoubtedly true but very weird. Do I think that I'll actually do something about it if people whose music I admire suggest I ought to? Bryan has been too cool to show - so far, anyway... Some of the bands appear doing live music; some lip-sync to pre-recorded music. None of the songs are named, and there are two groups unannounced, who I can't identify. But these are on it doing music: ELVIS COSTELLO, DAVID ESSEX (2 songs), DAVE EDMUNDS ROCKPILE (sounds like a live gig), CLIFF RICHARD, THIN LIZZY, PRETENDERS (Stop Your Sobbing), ROXY MUSIC (Trash), RACHEL SWEET (I Go To Pieces - lip sync), DAVID BOWIE (Boys Keep Swinging), and THE MOODY BLUES (Nights in White Satin - lip sync). The quality on this recording is FANTASTIC! I'd grade it at near DVD quality! The label on the box claim that Kate Bush and The Rolling Stones are supposed to be on this tape, but they aren't. They were probably replaced due to copyright release problems. Both 'Midnight Hour' and 'Over You' ring bells with me and I do recall one of them had a couple of dancers (majorettes ?) beside the band. Thompo seems be saying he recalls *playing* on a performance of 'Midnight Hour' but I think this may have been a different appearance - my recollection is of something definitely not 'live'. Worst thing is, I know I have something on video to confirm one of these mimed appearances but I can't remember which one. Any ideas ? >> Just checked on my collection and although thommo appears on the "midnight" video, theres no sign of an eagle although there is one on ferry singing "sign of the times" I also have thommo playing on "over you" ( ferry on guitar) It also features thommo miming to"eight miles high" "oh yeah"& "same old scene" (featuring tv effect blinds) The "Rockpop" german tv concert from 81 however features the real blinds! but no Thommo( not andy newmark, but someone tell me his name) Tracks are:- Bogus man, Trash, Rain,Rain, Rain, Flesh+blood, Oh yeah, Song for Europe, My only Love, The thrill of it all, & Do the strand Yours in squared-eyedness Steve - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 20:11:30 IST From: "gareth mc ginley" Subject: [AVALON] A magic day in Dublin A magic day in Dublin on Saturday the 29th of April, thanks largely to two of the greatest enthusuiasts you could wish to meet in John O'Brien (Jock) and Tom Wallace (Jock 2), and also a terifically in form Mr. Ferry. ~ An unpromising start to the day at the crack of dawn back in Donegal. I’d set the alarm clock for 6.30am but mysteriously it never went off. My brother had a good laugh later when it actually did go off at 6.30p.m. Just about caught the bus and we were off. ~ The Ferry gig was part of the Heineken Green Energy Festival which not only featured world famous names (Tracy Chapman, The Cranberries, The Charlatans, Gomez, and Joe Strummer) but also a host of Irish names around various pubs in the city. As they say, any excuse for an all day piss up. The Liffey was full of 30 foot inflatable bottles of Heineken. Thank God they were empty, otherwise there would have been several drownings without a shadow of a doubt. ~ Discussed psychological theories behind fascination for Roxy/ Ferry. John O’Brien certainly won the prize for most interesting theory i.e. associated with the time he was around the back of a famous Glasgow club, pinching the behind of “some blonde doll” (sorry John). ~ A big cheer goes to Lucy Wilkins who was a real star both on and off the stage. Lucy pops into the burger bar that we’re eating in. John’s on the case straight away, flattering her with the typical “Your better than Eddie Jobson” chat up lines. You can see it in her face, she’s heard it a hundred times from every old bugger that’s ever recognised her. Despite being “very tired” she kindly chats on for about 15 minutes before heading off to get ready. At the show she has loads of fun with Zev Katz. She plays a spectacular violin solo (even better than normal) on Out of the Blue and dedicates it to John afterwards. John suddenly gets it into his head that the double bed back at the hotel room might not be useless afterall. But despite all his valiant efforts he finishes up empty handed. Lucy gets every member of the band to sign a programme for a mate of Tom’s who’s having a hard time at the moment. Very considered. ~ Despite looking very dingy from the outside The Olympia is actually a lovely intimate three-tiered venue inside. The set is hard to fault, catering for all types of fans, all styles of music, and reflected by the diverse age range of the audience. Despite the criticism that The Way You Look Tonight has taken from the list, I for one think it’s well performed, one of the best numbers on the new album and a great opener, providing the perfect anticipation for Ferry’s entrance. A few of the 30’s numbers have been dropped (ATGB, Easy Living, You Do Something To Me, and Can’t Get Started With You). However this gives just the right balance to the set because the 30’s material did tend to drag out a bit at previous shows. Melancholy provides some of the most poignant moments of the evening with Where Or When, Chance Meeting (given a staggering haunting makeover), Sunset, The Only Face (always a favourite of mine), and Bittersweet all bringing a tear to the eye. Ferry enjoys himself most on numbers such as Street Life and Out of the Blue and little wonder why. They’re both brilliant. Oh Yeah was as good as I’ve ever heard it and a worthy addition to the set. The crowd go mad as usual for the hits at the end, although by this time the best is already over for the hardcore fans. Opportunities were, however, missed on this tour IMO. Songs like This Island Earth, Just Like You, Zamba, Just One Look, Song For Europe, Sentimental Fool, and Boys and Girls would have worked really well with this band. Ah well, you can’t have it every way. ~ I take back all I said about Ferry being a cranky old bollocks last week. Just put it down to me being a cranky old bollocks myself on that particular day. He’s a star on and off the stage, laughing his way through the set and obligingly posing for photo’s afterwards. He still looks quite awkward on stage but that’s one of his great attractions. What will he do next? Will it be the Irish jig, with his left foot behind his right leg? Will he do the Chubby Checker twist? Will he play the air cello just one more time? He’s looking great, and certainly a lot healthier than the man we saw on Later with Jools back in October. There certainly doesn’t seem to be much of an emergency to get back to the studio. Maybe he’s accepted that his dues are paid. ~ Meeting famous stars has never bothered me much. The performance is what matters. Nevertheless it was nice to get backstage just to see what it’s like. No different to an ordinary bar is the answer but it was interesting to see the band in a relaxed mood. Lucy Ferry was there, as was Jim Lawn and Belinda Enthoven. I was really delighted for Tom who was ecstatic at getting to meet and pose for a photograph with Bryan. This was his first time in Dublin and it made it worth every penny. Btw, Bryan was on the black stuff. ~ We all headed off agreeing that it had been a magic evening. John was so happy that, whilst walking along O Connell Street he started singing Shakespeare’s Sonnet and The Only Face. Even the residents of cardboard city were looking at him with the greatest of pity. By this stage though it had been a long day and we all just wanted to get some shut eye. Until next time – when btw, I want a rock show just to be able to sing “I blew up your body, But you blew my mind”.
