We recently discussed numerous cinematic allusions in BF's lyrics, titles, and imagery. We also discussed, briefly, allusions toward Shakespeare and other great literary poets and writers. I guess you had not yet subscribed, I remember these discussion within the past three or four months. However, I will try to summarize some of the discussion - perhaps tomorrow - time willing. I, too, deem these topics worthy of more in-depth discussion. In the meantime you might enjoy a read brought to our attention be one of our scholarly members, Bahi Para, as follows: < Subject: [AVALON] 'Wilderness is Paradise' The paradise of fools? Edward Fitzgerald's reading of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam has been a source of inspiration for Bryan's words, especially on the Bete Noire album. The texts are available as part of Project Gutenberg: Milton (Paradise Lost) and Wordsworth seem to have helped out, too, on an album that always returns to simple images of fire and water, night and day, the earth and the sky, the sun and the moon. As for swansongs I wouldn't be surprised - Ferry doesn't enjoy the constant travelling although he does seem to really enjoy performing at the moment. Maybe it's a show he's really proud of & I can't see a guy in his late fifties enjoying another long haul around the world. As for the Horoscope debate why does Jim Lawn feel that 20 plus (wow ! - more than Bete Noire sold !) copies of this should cause a delay in a box set from a guy whose last album has sold 500,000 copies plus.? Now get this from the official website ................................. "I am not sure of the date for the boxed set as a tape of unreleased studio material has surfaced within the 'Avalon' mailing list. Unfortunately this was passed to someone who has bootlegged the material for commercial gain. Whilst I believe that the people responsible for this are genuinley fans of Bryans, it should be noted that their criticism of the INFORMATION SERVICE is slightly at odds with one of their members exploiting this tape commercially." Why on Earth should this nonsense be "noted " ? "THE LIST" HASN'T CRITICISED JIM LAWN - SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS ON IT HAVE - DIVERSE - UK ,US and Europe. COUPLED WITH MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE (ie no response) I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT POST TO THE INFO SERVICE IS NOT DEALT WITH PROFESSIONALLY IN A MANNER BEFITTING BRYAN FERRY. Now this could be unfair so perhaps those members of this list who have never attempted to send an SAE to Jim Lawn could now do so and tell us all what sort of response they get. Bryan needs to be careful with this as his profile is now high enough to merit an appearence on "Watchdog" as well as the National Lottery. This doesn't mean Jim Lawn isn't doing his best but a crap service is still a crap service and fans deserve to be treated better. If it's too big for him then Bryan should employ more people to help or not have the service at all. THE REAL THING THAT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IS THE RELEVANCE OF AVALON TO THIS WHOLE ISSUE. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER THAT THE ACCUSED IS ON AVALON, ANY MORE THAN IT MATTERS WHAT AGE HE IS, OR WHAT COLOUR, OR WHICH COUNTRY HE LIVES IN, OR WHAT CLOTHES HE WEARS. BUT JIM LAWN FELT IT NECESSARY TO HAVE A SWIPE AT "ONE OF THEIR MEMBERS". WHO IS "THEY" ? IF THIS ISN'T UNFAIR I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. I GENUINELY THINK MOST MEMBERS OF THE LIST ARE DUE AN APOLOGY FROM JIM LAWN FOR THESE REMARKS AS THEY WERE QUITE CLEARLY AIMED AT THE LIST AS AN ENTITY IN IT'S OWN RIGHT. Some people are quite entiltled to criticise the information service ( there are CLEARLY problems) and I feel Jim Lawn should tackle the underlying problems rather than make remarks such as the one above. A They found them strange choices form such a back catalouge, but when the tour began and they heard the buzz around the audience at the opening bars from the die hard fans, the buzz bounced onto the band and these songs are now the bands favourite songs to perform. ".....they are very beautiful songs..." she said. Was she aware that there were several of us going to several shows. A Yes, she recognises some people in the front rows and some people she has met after the shows several times. How familiar were any of the band with Bryan's music before working with him. Chairman of the bored is not an insult, in fact, I didn't coin the term, a previous post contained a long humorous list of Ferry descriptions, from the discussion about Ferry and dare I say it, postmodernity. The term isn't insulting, perhaps you're not as familiar with Ferry's early work, but take a look at the "video" for say, "These Foolish Things' or "You Go To My Head" and you may notice a certain sense of world weary ennui in Mr. Ferry. I'm working on an humdinger of a post but it's on the back burner while I grade (and grade and grade. . . .) It ties RM/Ferry lyrics, speakers, and themes to one particular poem, and I think it'll be of interest to many.
