["Ujvary, Richard A." welcome to the list. Thanks! *s* > how did you learn about roxy (at > so early an age)??? They're played on the radio from time to time, and my father has a best of roxy/BF, which he hardly ever listens to and which I constantly had in my room since I had a CD player... At some point I bought another one (another best of with different contents), which got me hooked completely. Add Velvet Goldmine and a love for swing and 30ies-music and the resulting delight at "As time goes by"... But it was only when I informed myself a bit on the band that I got to know about their role in music history, with image and whatnot. Here they're treated (as far as I can judge) as mainstream music, you know, some synthie stuff from the 70ies and 80ies that everone likes to listen to because the tunes are easy... Like this. And as far as I see there aren't many actual fans here, rather people who sometimes like to listen to some of their songs on the radio. Which is strange when you read articles about their social impact... (Obviously I didn't get to see it first-hand...) So long! There is also discussions about music from other Roxy Music members (of which I'm not too familiar myself, as I only discovered Bryan's music when he did the solo Boys and Girls album). Nevertheless, I do find it very interesting and informative. I have seen no evidence of any comments that would label anyone on this list as being obsessed with Bryan Ferry and not his music. I have a great respect for people on this list and see no reason why we should be attacked by someone who has the word 'Eno' in their e-mail address. Could this person be obsessed with Brian Eno by any chance? My advice to this person is to actually READ some of the mail on this list. Anyway, that's by two cents worth. By the way, has anyone else got a ticket for Castle Howard yet. It would be great to meet up with anyone else who's going. Well where do I start? J. O'B. and I flew over to Dublin first thing an saturday morning and met up with our man Gareth from the emerald isle later on in the day for a pre gig chat and something to eat. Now this is where the evening started to get interesting. Who come into the burger bar but the lovely Lucy Wilkins, after a few minutes she comes over to join us for a 20 minute game of "Answer The Anorak". So on to the show (via the bar). As usual the proceedings were started by Julia and her harp this was followed by the girls of the string section and two numbers from the band. At last here was our Bryan looking well and sounding better than ever. Dropped from the set were Easy Living, Can't Get Started, You Do Something To Me and As Time Goes By. As of other show of late Oh Yeah was performed after the bands half time instrumental break. When I heard that this had been added to the set I must admit to having my doubts, but how wrong could I have been it really sounded fantastic. Indeed I would have to say it was one of the highlights of the show with the audience joining in for the chorus. Other high spots for me had to be Bitter Sweet, Out Of The Blue, Sunset and especially Street Life. The band and Bryan were really on top form for this show. The set may have been shorter, but it was better paced than before and Bryan didn't really say much between the songs. Alas all too soon it was time for the mass Do The Strand sing along and he was gone leaving behind a very happy audience. I thought the Glasgow show was pretty good, but this was better this may well have had something to do with the fact that the band sounded really tight and Bryan looked very relaxed. Does the story end here? No it certainly does not. We had arranged to meet Jim Lawn after the show, but as he seemed to have been delayed we decided to head once again for the bar only to be halted by the doorman as there was to be an after show get together for pass holder only. So just as we were about to head back the way we came who appears but Jim with passes for the three of us. Bit by bit the band started to drift in, Lucy Wilkins came in and decided to join us at the bar along with Belinda Enthoven from Bryan's office. Then there he was the lad himself mingling with the various groups of folk who had been given passes. After about 20 minutes Jim brought Bryan over and introduced us, what had been an excellent evening became one of those happenings that you never will forget. And at last after all these years I finally had my picture taken with the man whose music bookmarks every major point of my life over the last 28 years. Over the last 20 years I've met Bryan 10 or 11 times outside the venues before and after gigs, but I never seemed to have a camera with me. This time round I was determined to get that picture which had eluded me for so long, but I never really thought it would be taken under these circumstances. I can't thank Jim enough for setting this up as it really did mean an awful lot to me after so many years. Afterward we went for a snack with a friend of John's called Iris, her husband and a friend. A really good time ( pardone the pun) was had by all and the only down side was that we could not extend our stay to take in the second nights show. The gist of it was: BF said he attributes his longevity in the music industry to not changing for the sake of fitting into the mainstream, and by being true to himself. When asked how he was inspired to write and compose as he does, he kind of skirted the subject. He was asked about a few things which are common to most interviews I've read, ie his sense of style etc, and the answers were the same. There was no reference made to his personal life at all, and he seemed very at ease, joking and lighthearted. Said he would like to live in Ireland if he didn't have to be in London. He kind of volunteered the Roxy Music reunion bit himself, which was encouraging. Throughout they played clips of mostly "Avalon" and some later Ferry solo stuff. Interesting that he's cutting back on the 30s numbers, indeed paring down the whole show as Avalonion observations of the South African and Irish legs all refer to shorter sets. This has certainly been a strange tour. Although punctuated by "holidays" it continues to wend its merry way around the globe. The major capitals, of course, but St Austell and Riga ?? I can only draw the conclusion that the old boy's enjoying himself. I think the jazz / orchestral productions have brought fresh interest for him to some of the well worked numbers of yore. That newspaper comment about Bryan travelling in the non-smoking string section mini-bus has stuck in my mind ; a long way from taking the mainline to Harlem with Spedding. And who wouldn't enjoy the fragrant charms of Lucy, Julia et al ? I also doubt whether Colin Goode has to be taken from the plane in a wheelchair like poor, departed Alan Spenner's inebriated start to the Bride sessions at Montreaux. Its all quite mellow and civilised, and probably fairly healthy activity for a 56 year old crooner. And if this is his touring swansong, well at least we've all had a chance to pay our respects... Tom: Thanks for writing about the Dublin show. How fortunate you, J. O'B, and Gareth are. Your story made me smile. Pray tell, what questions did Lucy Wilkins answer? Did any one mention Avalon List? Bryan Ferry.com? - Did Belinda Enthoven or Jim Lawn or BF say anything? You know what they say; curiosity killed the cat. Again, thank you and best wishes. What a band...and I think Revolver's sort of displacing the usually placed higher Pepper....maybe some sort of reevaluation or just the nature of the list. And as for the rest...Probably Parsons Green's missing.....by Fairport. Wonder if it's even on cd. Hello All, Q magazine in the UK has just published a list of 'Greatest British Albums' (as voted for by the magazine's own writers). The good news is that 'For Your Pleasure' came in a respectable 33rd - the bad news is that it was the ONLY representative of the Roxy/Ferry oeuvre. Some very rum choices in the list IMO but here it is for anyone who wants to have a look, Regards, Ivor. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 15:32:30 +0200 From: "Sebastian Fasthuber" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Cross Fades > <> oops, i overread that. now this IS an insult. obviously someone playing the agent provocateur here. i don't understand why you do this, but i don't like the way you (are trying to) communicate, russell. let me quote from a song which must be one of your favourites: "we're the restless hearted, not the bored." (or so) seriously: go to www.bryanferry.com and have a look a the picture with the blue background (shot on a day of heavy thinking about life and all the forces involved, so he had no time to shave): this guy is not bored - this guy is (i don't know when the picture was taken - any guesses?) far too obsessed to be bored and possibly thinking: "will i ever find my way again?" (sorry can't stop quoting, but i love his lyrics from the 80s and 90s - highly emotional, very deep and far from being boring). putting those shakespeare volumes back on the shelves, sebastian - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V5 #171 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
