Curated by David Troop, Sonic Boom takes 1990's post-techno, post-rave, post-ambient sound art out of a restrictive club context and liberates it in a gallery environment. The largest group exhibition of sound art ever staged features a series of sound installations in which the visitor encounters the mechanical and the organic, the electronic and the acoustic, the sculptural and the intangible. The exhibition creates both subtle and intense sensory experiences, offering a soundscape for the imagination. Oh and it features an Eno installation (and topically another artist who goes under the pseudonym of Disinformation!) Richard Hamilton is also part of an on going exhibition at an art gallery in Cork Street - I can't remember which one off hand. So if you want to see his version of Bing Crosby's "I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas" that's the place to be. I don't think it's a case of 'scoring points' re the idea of a convention/meet-up/piss-up call it what you will. The point that like-minded people/'fans' arrange to get together is actually what it is all about. Now that it seems to be happening in some small way, I can only think of it as a good thing, particularly if it serves to encourage more people to do likewise in the future, perhaps on an even larger scale, who knows ? As both I and others in recent months have commented, there are quite a few of us who would not have attended nearly as many Gigs as they did, were it not for the social elements involved. I will freely admit that I would have thought twice about attending Gigs such as Antwerp/Brussels back in February, were it not for our fine Dutch friends to be travelling there too. Same goes for Paris in March - a meeting of 8 of us in an empty Cafe (ok, artistic license there). It happens to be fun (remember that concept anyone ?). And, for the record, a bleary lager-laden conversation did spring up, originated by I actually don't know who, about a possible 'meet' of a load of us at a future date/time to be arranged, in a Pub (called 'The Hare and Hounds' - I think) following the Golders Green soiree, and then was touched upon again in a 3 Scotsmen 1 Englishmen Taxi-Cab bound for Highgate Village/Crouch End (running Red lights, Stop signs) later the same evening. This is the very reason that it was brought up again the following week at RFH. Because it was FUN. A point worth remembering in these flaming times. And that's why a load of us are getting together in 2 weeks time. It's not 'official', and damn well doesn't have to be. It's eat/drink/laugh/discuss music/gigs time, in very good company. And it's the first of many. Quite why it's made the 'cognoscenti' think, is, honestly, something of a mystery to me. This is Johnny Reece, News at Ten, Crouch End, desperately trying to read up about 'installations'. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 19:02:47 +0100 From: "Laura Shadbolt" Subject: [AVALON] Re: avalon-digest V5 #168 > Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 16:10:45 -0700 (PDT) > From: Noam Bronstein > Subject: [AVALON] You can't even IMAGINE how bad the digest looks > > I have to be on avalon-digest for a couple of days while I switch > ISP's. > I've somehow managed not to notice the terrible etiquette too much > until now. If Martin had been making his little digs in private then I would have sent my original posting privately, but he didn't so neither was my reply. As far as I'm concerned I've got nothing else to say on the subject. As for the who thought of a convention first postings I couldn't care less one way or the other. Jim Lawn wanted to sound out the avalon folk on the subject and asked me to post it on the list. This seemed to spark of a wave of paranoia on the list along the line that Jim was trying to steel the idea. Why should the prospect of an official convention upset certain folk so much? I have no doubt that had an official event had been organized the same people would be complaining that the list had not been asked for any input. I know that the was one released in Germany and one in Australia, but so far I haven't been able to track either down via my usual sources. I wouldn't mind getting hold of them as I have the one that was released in the states to promote "Mamouna". I have a friend with a PAL machine who does this for me when I need it, and I have two VCRs and can easily copy them, once (a) is done. Therefore, I will be in the middle of this, and just a day or two ago I solicited names & mailing addresses of those who will be wanting in on this, so I can try to get some pre-organization done. You could send me a blank tape if you want, but I just feel that is a waste of postage .. your choice. I think it's easier to coordinate if I buy all the tapes myself, and then just collect $$ for the vid and mailing (probably something like $3.00 + $2.09), when they are done and in the mail to each person. Right now, there's nothing to be done except send me name & mailing address. You'll all know when I receive the video from Johnny & am ready to start the process!! His concert was awesome wasn't it. We went to it in Seattle. Last November. Where did you go? Do you have a list of his concerts and where they will be. We would love to go again. Thanks for the info. I went on Wed 19/04 in Johannesburg, S. Africa. All I know is that he's performing in Dublin tonight (I think?) and then onto Oslo. But I'm sure there are many more people who know much more about it! Hi Betsy I also tried to find reviews in our local papers and couldn't. Thanks for the info re. old RM stuff. Just to mention a few things about the concert, I would say first off: far too short. After waiting 18 yrs for it, that was a bit of a disappointment. I thought the band was awesome, but the ladies in the string section should stick to that, they aren't great backup singers... The set consisted of mostly ATGB material with a few BF songs; the only RM one was "Avalon". (I think if he hadn't performed that, certain members of the audience would've torn the place apart, as they kept calling for RM material). While I enjoyed hearing ATGB, I would still like to hear all the old RM/BF stuff. All that aside, he has a phenomenal voice live, so much charisma, it was a small theatre, the sound was excellent and I loved it. Some good news though, in a tv interview last week, Bryan Ferry said he's quite keen to have a RM reunion, and a tour. So I live in hope:-) Michele - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V5 #169 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
