Rock Follies was the fictional story of the rise and fall of a female singing group with music by Andy Mackay and lyrics by Howard Schuman. The first series was screened in 1976 with the second a year later. Each series was accompanied by a soundtrack album: Rock Follies Island ILPS9362 1976. Rock Follies of '77 Polydor Delux 2302 027 1977. >From the 1976 album they released two singles: Glen Miller Is Missing/Talking Pictures (both from album) Island WIP 6293. Sugar Mountain/War Brides (b-side non-album) Island WIP 6310 And to my knowledge one single form the '77 album: O.K.?/B-Side (b-side non-album) Polydor 2001 714. If my memory serves me well "O.K.?" gave Andy a No.1 hit, the only one of Roxy to ever do this in the U.K. national charts. There's really no comparison with this and any of Andy's other recordings as it was written to accompany a drama. And there is little or no comparison between Andy's recordings and those of Bryan or indeed Phil. Well I hope this was of interest to you. I loved the Eno stuff, but thought Rock Follies was bloody awful. I suppose it only really works when you know about the series. I have seen one episode about 10 years ago, and it wasn't up to much. As for the Eno stuff, I loved it and still do. Infact I was playing through all my Eno albums over Easter weekend and I'd forgotten how much ahead of its time Warm Jets was, Blamk Frank is like some hip-hop prototype, and stuff like Dead Finks sound so fresh. In fact, it was the Dead Finks thread last week that made me listen, plus watching Velvet Goldmine again and noticing it was on the soundtrack (but not on the cd). There's definitely a Ferry piss take element to it (Dead Finks not Velvet Goldmine). And as for Velvet Goldmine, does anyone truly understand the end or is it supposed to leave me bewildered? SimonG PS When I got to Music For Airports I put the cd on repeat as I was busy, then about halfway through sat down and fell asleep. The album played round three times and didn't disturb me once. Lots of chivalry then and we apparently loved it. Same for ATGB. A party scene lost in time. Another re-working of the past. I do believe he did a TOTP appearance with 'the little ladies' too - could that be confirmed by someone ? However, the Album did reach No. 1. Don't expect something amazing from 'War Brides' either - I couldn't hide my disappointment when I heard it, but then again it may have little or no similarity to the planned/unreleased Roxy song of the same name, I don't know. Have to agree about Eno's 'Dead Finks Don't Talk' - one of the greatest ever tracks. His Ferry impersonation singing "as you peck your way up there" on this track is sublime. Don't worry I've charmed a couple of them into reporting back to me. BFPA Bryan says that Merlin surfed and found a bunch discussing Duchamp, Rimbaud and Madame Claude in relation to his work JL Who are they ? No. This crowd are only interested in exploiting Roxy for profit. BFPA How many are in this internet group ? JL Perhaps a dozen. But they're all bootleggers. They even dug up that French soap opera thing. BF (grabs phone) ..they WHAT !? JL Aye, I told you they were dangerous. BF That changes everything. Get your, ahem, spies to tell them that I'm gonna delay release of the box-remodel. There's a case of Montepulciano in it for you if you can get them fighting amongst themselves. JL Yes Sir. Thank you Sir. - ---------- >From: "Simon Galloway" >To: avalon@smoe.org >Subject: Re: [AVALON] Todays Music >Date: Thu, Apr 27, 2000, 4:33 pm > > Nevermind all that. Although Mackay's tunes were good I always thought that Schumans lyrics were appaling."I did my numbers with a frying pan" for example; even Oasis would reject them as being to bland I have this mental image of Andy cringing when presented with the words. I'd love to hear an instrumentel version though, anyone got one? When the series was being touted Love is the Drug was #2 in the UK charts, and I presume that was how Andy got the job regards Steve - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 12:10:18 EDT From: JFROXY@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] RE : Rock Follies In a message dated 27/04/00 02:52:32 GMT Daylight Time, johnny.reece@virgin.net writes: << I do believe he did a TOTP appearance with 'the little ladies' too - could that be confirmed by someone ? >> I don't remember AM appearing on TOTP with the girls, but he did appear on the last episode of the first series, dressed as a British soldier performing "War Brides". Could be irritating. the delgados - The Great Western - Glaswegian experimentalists in grand melodic mode, well that's what is says in the reviews, but I haven't had chance to listen yet. It made a big hole in my pocket. And whilst I'm here, for those who responded to an Anorak's plea to make computer based catalguing easy, I HAVE FOUND THE KEY, well for Mac users anyway. It's a program called 4th Dimension (4D) and allows you to create your own databases, with your own input headings and everything. It's £360, but you can get it free with this month's MacFormat magazine. That saved me some!
