Here are my (hopefully) last thoughts on the subject: First of all, I was taught that when refering to someone (whom you have not met) in the third person, you should refer to them as "Mr." or "Ms." or "Mme." or whatever. I don't think that saying "Mr. Lawn" is rude or condescending at all. Icy at times perhaps, but proper and polite. Secondly, I wouldn't over analyze how his accusation was presented. I don't think it was overly thought out on his part. It reads like it was just tossed off.* We all have posted things on lists and/or bulletin boards that were not as delicately worded as we would have hoped. I have not had any dealings with Mr. Lawn, but it does sound like several people have legitimate gripes with his service. It also sounds like he has some evidence that someone from here has profited from a boot. Myself, I still think that he would make a valuable addition to our community. Even if he only visited us online for a day, I think it would clear the air a bit. I think the issue is the "for profit" thing, not the tracks themselves. Lets keep it polite and actually ask him to discuss this with us. My two cents. And has exploited the group A funny thing, language. I have never thought of myself as a "true fan" of Bryan Ferry, or a "loyal fan" or a "dedicated fan," though perhaps I am. I'm sure many Manilovers are happy to see themselves like that, and in the early Seventies the Osmonds had numerous, and no doubt still have a few, "true fans." Is it just snobbery on my part to believe that Roxy transcends what seems to me a banality? I mean, I admire, say, Dostoevsky, and I've read lots off his stuff, but I don't think that makes me a "loyal fan" exactly. I don't think I am a "loyal fan" of anyone. ( Except Beryl Bainbridge perhaps. Everyone in Britain is a loyal fan of Beryl.) The term makes me think of children - mainly girls, I'm afraid - arguing in the playground over who is the "truer fan," which meant when I was a kid "who has the most Donny posters, and the biggest?" And I think to seperate that bad person who has "exploited" the Avalon Group from the rest of us, that cynical user as opposed to we "true fans" quite spooky. Sorry. The principal members were Bryan Ferry (b. Sept. 26, 1945Washington, Durham, Eng.), Brian Eno (in full Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno; b. May 15, 1948Woodbridge, Suffolk), Andy Mackay (b. July 23, 1946England), Phil Manzanera (original name Philip Targett-Adams; b. Jan. 31, 1951London), Paul Thompson (b. May 13, 1951Jarrow, Northumberland), and Eddie Jobson (b. April 28, 1955Billingham, Cleveland). Formed in 1971, Roxy Music was largely the brainchild of vocalist-songwriter Ferry, who had studied with Richard Hamilton, a key figure in British pop art. A shifting early lineup stabilized around Ferry, saxophonist Mackay, keyboardist Eno, guitarist Manzanera, and drummer Thompson. The band's eponymous debut album, the nonalbum single "Virginia Plain" (both 1972), and the follow-up album For Your Pleasure (1973) were hits in Britain, as Roxy Music's fully textured sound and lush instrumentation set it apart from mainstream rock. When Eno departed to pursue his remarkable career as a solo performer and producer, Ferry became even more the band's focal point, cultivating a suave persona he projected in a solo career that paralleled his work with Roxy Music. Following British success with Stranded (1973) and Country Life (1974), the band broke through in the United States with Siren and its hit single "Love Is the Drug" in 1975. Splitting, re-forming, and splitting again, Roxy Music had commercial success with its albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s but failed to regain its earlier critical acclaim. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 12:51:25 -0700 From: Russell Schaffer Subject: Re: [AVALON] Encyclopedia Britannica I guess this places Roxy on the more pompous, overblown, obvious, pretentious side of ART ROCK (not counting Heroes). The following message was posted by Jim Lawn on the official Ferry site late last night. Re: Bryan Ferry Box Set by jim on 25-Apr-00 There appears to be some confusion around the material on the unreleased cassette which has surfaced recently.I can confirm that it is from the "Horoscope" sessions and that what had been apparently shared between a handful of people has now grown to anumber in excess of 20 plus. Perhaps this will take some of the flack away from Richard Swift as the above and the information that he posted earlier are simply the reporting of what has been placed on the official site by Jim.
