He made many enemies and was thrown into jail in Venice on charges of witchcraft; when I was bored in Paris I read volume 3 of his Memoirs (which are eight volumes long or so), "The Affair in Venice," in which he describes his seductions and his imprisonment with an unexpected irony and cynical flair, like an eighteenth-century Gore Vidal. Being a spit from New York means that though they're listed as out of print on the various web-sites I checked, it wasn't too difficult to find them - though I suspect one or two were the last extant copies in the city. The only one I missed was COUNTRY LIFE - so if anyone on this list has a spare copy ( in the card sleeve, natch) or knows of a copy catching dust in their local record store, then PLEASE get in touch with me! (off-list.) But my, aren't they superbly refreshed and made new? I thought particularly sharpened the first two Roxys, AVALON and, oddly seeing how recent it is, TAXI, which yielded all sorts of things I hadn't noticed before. I wondered whether it was just that I was listening more carefully than usual, but a random comparison of 'old' and 'new' versions proved that the perceived sheen was by no means imaginary. ( The novelty of these comparisons wore off, however, and now I'm not bothering.) As my other half remarked as we played FOR YOUR PLEASURE in the car, " It sounds as though the drums are here in the car!" I intend to spend the next few evenings exploring them in depth. If you do see sealed Roxy vinyl, check closely whether it's a Bob Ludwig remaster or just a common reissue. As a rule of thumb, a lot (not all) of reissues are pricey and will not beat out an original early _UK_ pressing in the sonics dept. Remasters are a different story. He mentioned to me at the RAH that release of the boxed set could be put back because someone on this list had apparently started to sell the rarities that surfaced on the ASSH2 CD for commercial gain. I didn't post anything because it was clearly a very sensitive issue but Jim has now mentioned this on the bulletin board too. You'll see from the text below that Jim acknowledges people on the list are genuine fans but takes issue - rightly I think - with anyone exploiting this stuff on the open market. Assuming the information that has reached Jim indicating material is being openly sold is correct, I hope the person responsible is pleased that his or her actions may result in the rest of us having to wait longer for the boxed set and the damage this has undoubtedly done to this list and the integrity of its' memebers. The text of what Jim posted is: "I am not sure of the date for the boxed set as a tape of unreleased studio material has surfaced within the 'Avalon' mailing list. Unfortunately this was passed to someone who has bootlegged the material for commercial gain. Whilst I believe that the people responsible for this are genuinley fans of Bryans, it should be noted that their criticism of the INFORMATION SERVICE is slightly at odds with one of their members exploiting this tape commercially. That said, we are still working on a four CD set which will include rare and unreleased material. I certainly think it sad that someone is exploiting 'strictly confidential' for profit, but I have to say I find it unbelievable that Virgin or anyone else would delay the boxed set as a result. In addition, since I am commenting on this topic: 1. Mr. Lawn has proof that a member of Avalon is the for-profit bootlegger? Or is it merely an unfounded allegation? Or is this care for such details my American-influenced rules of evidence (innocent until proven guilty) showing? 2. Even if this alleged for-profit bootlegger is a _bona fide_ member of this mailing list, he is then justified in tarring the rest of us with the same brush? Seems rather unfair from someone who seems to well aware of the criticism leveled at him in this forum and who comments on it in his posting to the "official" site. 3. On that note, as someone who has been defending Mr. Lawn _in absentia_, I am disappointed that he has taken this opportunity to take a pot shot at the list. I'm with Noam: if Mr. Lawn has something to say to Avalon, then he should have the courtesy to say it in the appropriate forum. 4. How the appearance of three songs--which are moderately interesting but I am sure hardly the most stellar examples from the vaults--could somehow put a break on the issuing of another box set is beyond my limited intelligence. Because it seems that this keen commercial interest, albeit unlawful, should only seem to spur such a release, if only to trump the bootleggers. On the subject of someone on the list *selling* copies of our CD tree material, I think if Mr. Lawn does have info about someone on this list selling material then he should have addressed the list about this and named this person. The CD Tree FAQ is very clear about the profiting of material originating from this list and we should have been given the chance to handle it on our end before naming the Avalon list as a haven for this unknown for-profit bootlegger. What evidence does he have that someone is selling Strictly Confidential "for profit" ? 2. How do you know (s)he's an Avalonion ? 3. Kindly name the person. Failure to answer these queries can only mean that the allegation is fiction. I know you're just a conduit for these stories but I'm disposed to think that you have Lawn's private number. This smear must be addressed. Over a hundred Avalonions wrote humourous and kind letters accompanying their cheques for APS and I think it's inconceivable that one of us would be involved in such a tawdry action. Lawn has a giant chip on his shoulder about Avalon - the fact that we disseminate tour info way ahead of his rag, the fact that we have a daily intellectual debate about all things Roxy/Ferry (amidst the static), the fact that our clubby atmosphere only serves to highlight what a sterile and self-serving publication the Information letter is.
