Well Rod I'm probably to blame for the anti-Sting campaign. In my humble opinion perhaps 75% of Avalonia detest the former Police frontman, although I'll have to check the stats with Colleen. He strikes me as phoney. This is what I originally posted .. "Sting is the antithesis of Ferry. Yes I know they share a common geographical background and were both teachers but that's where their similarity ends. 1. Sting is smug. Bryan is bedevilled by doubt. These past few weeks I haven't been able to pick up a magazine without seeing pictures of Sting sitting cross legged, wearing (I can barely bring myself to write it..) pre-faded blue denim dungarees and a sense of metaphysicality as he stares into the middle distance . Yes, the former Police front man invites you into his charming Tuscan villa with his charming wife, yes the same wife he screwed behind the back of his charming previous wife. 2. Sting courts publicity, see above, whilst Bryan is (undoubtedly) camera shy. 3. Sting is a reconstructed hippy whilst Bryan is a disciple of the avant garde. Remember Sting posing with that tribesman with the bad liposuction job, a self-styled ambassador for the victims of the rain-forrest. Well I also remember how an investigative team checked out his dustbin and found it full of bottles - clearly not destined for recycling - and aerosols. Strangely enough I could imagine Bry carting his empties down to the bottle bank. Bryan is hip, a true modernist - did I read he was the second rated UK buyer of contemporary art - but is at pains to keep his interest out of the public eye. 4. Even Bryan's worst lyrics (NYC in my opinion,) don't come near the abyss of "Da da da da" or "Roxanne." 5. Sting boasts about his "amazing tantric sex ability" whilst Bryan leaves his preferences (and performances) all to the imagination. The two ex-lovers of Byron who have confided in me speak in glowing terms of his dark, midnight hour predilictions, "we're chained and bound." 6. Sting's voice sounds to me like an adolescent screech whilst Bryan's is like, well, his tonsils have been marinated in sauterne, the larynx of love. 7. Sting dresses like a student while Bryan remains the best coutured man in Britain. The latter is, of course, my estimation but most fashion critics form a concensus that Lucy is the best dressed lady in the country. 8. Lastly, I just can't stand Sting's music. It's so portentous, so earnest. What a contrast with the charming insouciance of the Maesto's ouevre. There. I've said it. Sorry Sting fans. I'll go back to my Scritti Politti albums now." Is that what you think? Like the rest of Siren it is a well structured, performed and produced track, but it's a fairly straightforward, almost traditional song in terms of it's structure and chord progression, with very few little twists. What makes it different is the vocal harmonies which are quite strange. That track always struck me as being Roxy's take on a country song. Go on Bryan, sing Stand By Your Man. My point exactly. Most bands don't know where scene-setting and mood-setting musical bites end and where it becomes gratuitous noise. But for those musicians who are able to discriminate, and BF is one, the wall of music is a richly textured stage. This ability to discriminate between noise and prop music is a facet of artistry. Mr. Ferry's artistry may not be totally to your liking but then most people do not like every period of Picasso's work. C'est la vie! KBP PS. Wouldn't it be wonderful to produce BF's next release? Martin Stockman did NOT see Bryan in the Gas Board, and is therefore embittered. I'm not a great Sting fan, and the one Police album I've heard I thought, forgive me, rather boring. But the author of ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK can't be all bad, and I like what I've heard of his post-Police semi-jazz arrangements. Okay, a little Sade perhaps, but then I like Sade too. And of course Sting's politics and personal life on which Martino casts his ever-critical eye could equally be glossed in a bright and shining light. His interest in ecology which Martin sees as smug could just as easily be seen as heroic and brave. I'm sure that's what they say on the Sting discussion list. And when you think about it, he has nothing to gain from taking his stand, and has probably lost some 'pop' credibility. So let's try not to HATE him, folks. Were I on the Sting discussion list, I'm sure I could produce the anti-matter version of Martin's list, in which I point out that Bryan is a poseur, is vain, can't sing, is crap without Roxy, is shallow, is self-absorbed, is a class pretender, is a snob, makes 'lounge music,' ... well, you get the picture. And just as we all call Bryan a genius ( too often, in my view,) everyone on the Sting list calls Sting a genius, and everyone on the Chris De Burgh list calls Chris a genius, and everyone on every damn list calls their hero a genius, and it is all empty, empty, empty. I am by no means a Sting fan (I HATED the Police) but to be honest I couldn't fault the guy. His band was excellent, great sound and his singing voice was spot on, OK he lowered the key on a couple of his songs, but who doesn't? So credit where credit is due, there has been a lot worse music going around through the years which has never been slated.........what was the name of those four Jurassic overrated arseholes from Liverpool again? one is very gallantly going out with a one legged model at the moment. Releases: The wider release of the "Slave To Love" compilation has been brought forward to the start of July. The "Early Years" Roxy Compilation is still being pencilled in for an early August release. Fan Convention: As was discussed with some of us after the Newcastle show on 18th of december Jim would like to know how many people would be interested in holding a convention in London. If you have any ideas on venues/content etc. please contact Jim. If there was enough support it is possible that something could be planned for the future. Anthea Norman-Taylor: Anthea's role in the Ferry organization is one only dealing with business matters, no general enquiries from the fans.
