Excrutiating, I thought. A journalist who seems if anything more self-absorbed, indeed tediously so, than the man she's writing about. And if you're going to try to be funny at someone's expense, and undoubtedly Ferry is an easy target for this sort of thing, you actually need to be funny. Purely guess work, Imo. I think all his songs are >about his life from personal experiences. It's a mixed bag IMO. As we've established, a lot of his lyrics have been inspired by the cinema, others have personal relevence and some have both. One of the great attractions about Ferry is that he's never obvious in his approach. There's layers and layers of meaning to his lyrics. Personally I'd rather that he never told us the full truth. It's part of what makes these discussions fascinating. Also in reply to Russell: It's surely a bit harsh to call BF a faded genius by 1982. Not his most inspiring period OK but good nontheless and as the period 1985-1994 proves he still retained that genial quality. In fact for my own enjoyment it'd be damn tight race between the first four Roxy albums and the four Ferry albums in the period 1985-94. BF can be charming at times but all to often he strikes me as a cranky old bollocks and just for the sake of it mostly. Very much in the "demented genius" style!. Self obsessed? Definitely. He still seems to regard himself as the most important man in music at times. But in some ways that's a good thing because he's retained an eternal pride in both himself and his work. So even if I probably couldn't stand being in his company for more than 5 minutes I'm sure it's probably necessary for a man who has produced such consistently brilliant work. Not his most inspiring period OK but good nontheless a Gareth. I least I called him a genius! Most people certainly wouldn't go that far (mostly out of ignorance). If anyone noticed a somewhat bitter tone to my postings, I'll try to summarize as briefly as possible. Roxy Music debuted as a perfectly formed manifestation of Pop Art in thecontext of popular music. This was Richard Hamilton/Warhol-esque material covertly storming the charts with Virginia Plain. Ferry gives a layered, referential, ironic tinge to the music while at the same time (and here's the important part that separates Roxy from other Glammers) offering something passionate, heartfelt, vulnerable... Ferry heigthens the performative elements of his music to near caricature but stops short. For me, he found the perfect balance on the first albums, far surpassing Bolan, Bowie and the like in sheer emoptional impact and dramatic resonance. Bowie and Bolan's music may have been knowing and smart in its cheap rock n' roll guises, but they simply don't produce the depth and intensity of say, a Ladytron or a Dreamhome. The best Pop Art transcends its kitsch appeal. Warhol was able to do it sometimes, Lichtenstein never. Roxy Music did it for two albums And, with the inertia of success, Pop Art gradually becomes Pop. By the time Ferry and gang resurfaces on Manifesto, they're nothing more than another rock band. Maybe a good band, maybe even a great one. But the vision was gone. Did Ferry run out of ideas, or lose interest in art? I'm sure economics were involved, Bride Stripped Bare was a minor debacle, he ran back to Roxy's arms, with the pressure heavily felt to produce something sucessful. Hence the image makeover, the young hip bassist, and the disco beats. We can debate the merits and impressive production values of Avalon endlessly, but who wants to? The point is, it's not a challenging album, its not a thought provoking album. But of course all music shouldn't be these things. But don't blame me for being a little disappointed when the artist behind some of the most innovative, intelligent, and moving pop resorts to mellow, feel-good mood music that seems ripe material for the Muzak corporation. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 08:27:46 +0200 From: "Sebastian Fasthuber" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Lyrics and the faded genius > We can debate the merits and impressive production values of Avalon > endlessly, but who wants to? I will surely record it for APS2 but I'm quite sure they will put it on tape and sell it in a short time as it is copyrighted VIRGIN. As it will be recorded, we can imagine to organize something one of those we evenings...
