Needless to say a personal favourite. One of the lines I always heard as: With the making out of payment / Three and nine make twelve which makes more sense to me in (what I perceive to be through my own flawed ear canals) the context of the songs than the printed lyrics. This and the following: 6 and two threes now, more I cannot say always led me to believe that there's a strong pre-decimal currency sub- text going on. I also feel that there's a nostalgia in there and some resentment of change: I'm not so special / You're a misfit too Why must _they_ interfere in / Everything we do In 1974 there was a local government act here, which redefined old county boundaries and created metropolitan authorities. Bits of County Durham became Tyne & Wear IIRC. And there was Cleveland too. An interference with local identity imposed from Whitehall. Mere coincidence? I think not! But has now already been said, the great thing about (early) Ferry is that the lyrics work on so many levels. There are a whole heap of cultural references in there that, if you follow them up, can take you a long way away from where you started. This is something less prevalent in Ferry's more recent lyrics (at least IMO). As for Casanova, I feel sure that it's (at least partly) about Eno (I'm sure I read somewhere that the "second hand in glove with second rate" line was a reference to Eno working with Cale and Nico, so we can take it that Bryan is a fan of Lou? - urghh!). But I had a thought a while back, based on my complete lack of Spanish. Casa - castle - nova - new = Newcastle? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it may be better than no knowledge at all? Concurring with other list members, I love Bryan Ferry's lyrics because they are subject to many and diverse interpretations depending on the mindset of the interpreter. I believe that Mr. Ferry would be "certifiable" if his life and work revolved around Ms. Hall. Rather, the essence of what she was and the imprint she has left upon his mind has contributed to his interpretation of life, an additive - the way smoke adds to atmosphere. Perhaps there is no right or wrong way to interpret Bryan Ferry's work, after all, it is art. Crafty, and yet not overly defined thereby leaving imagination to fill-in meaning. Great art is dynamic - it grows, evolves as does the interpreter. So, five will get you ten, you can come back again. Lone Star, Yellow Rose, Silver Spurs and Rodeos. How do the horses feel today? Purely guess work, Imo. I think all his songs are about his life from personal experiences. His wife Lucy & her alcohol problem, the song, IF it Takes All Night, could be easily about her. "There are many things that I could say to try & comfort you, But , I know the word's you'd like to hear, are simply " I love you". So if music be my mistress, Then at least she's Madame Claude--d'accord". Another song , he could be singing about Lucy ," Is A really good time." Lyrics go like this." You're well educated with no common sense. All your troubles come from yourself." He goes on to say," There's a girl I used to know Her face is her fortune. She's got a heart of Gold." Imo, Ferry's lyrics are about pain & misfortune. I believe he says in song what he'd like to say, to someone or is trying to say to someone. We don't live with him , I'm sure his career has taken a toll on his marriage. There had to be a reason Lucy drank. Being a female myself, I'd hate to think my husband was still in love with someone from his past. That I was 2nd choice because he couldn't have his true love. Avalon means paradise, and this mailing list might just be a little bit of paradise for some of us who enjoy BF/RM. I think your a little harsh in your subject title, but that's your opinion. I never thought of Avalon as a Disco song, and it is sad that you would think of Ferry as a 'fallen genious'. His music has made a difference in many of our lives, a blissful experience. He never claimed to be or probably would be too modest to be considered a genious, nor is he fallen. Well flashback fans and deja vues, hang on to your dock chairs, 'cos it just might happen again. The people to watch for this time are an outfit called Roxy Music -- and they come, folks, from those same wonderful people who brought you King Crimson in 1968. Result, I predict, could well be the same. Roxy are so adventurous in their approach (their first album, yet to be released, was produced by Crimson's Peter Sinfield) that they baffle even themselves on occasions. To describe their music is difficult -- as like Crimson, they need to be seen. Their hearts are in the forties -- with overtones of fifties rock and strong overtones of sixties electronic eclecticism. One of their numbers is entitled "BOB (Battle of Britain) Medley" ... you can begin to guess the possibilities. I shouldn't reaslly say too much, becuse a large amount of their appeal is on inital impact. I just hope you feel the same as I do.
