The sound was shit. I was 3 rows behind Jocelyn, about row 13. I have been to a few RAH concerts recently and suppose Martino is right, acoustically the stalls are probably not the best place unless you happen to be there for the proms. Which I have not. BF sang 22 songs, 11 Roxy (although some were also on BF albums), 7 ATGB, 3 Ferry covers and 1 Ferry original (The Only Face - marvellous). The RAH crowd was a bit boisterous, the champagne cork popping at the end of the harp intro led to laughter that was a bit disconcerting, lots of audience talk and a cellphone ringing during the Sunset intro - sacrilege. Very subdued performance. For my money, RFH was MUCH better, but I was in row 2 then - thanks again Martin. Did I just imagine that the band was not very "tight"? On a more general note, the ATGB numbers in particular do nothing for me. Whilst I am pleased, as we all must be, that BF is touring again, this part of the show falls a little flat. I suppose that I think that it could be almost anyone (who can sing!) doing these numbers. They have no individual stamp. However, I don't believe that the show should consist of just the old standards, and would love to see new material as well as some other old favourites revived - why no These Foolish Things, for example - and I wouldn't care if I never heard Avalon, LITD or Jealous Guy live again (unless there was no alternative...) Finally, on Jealous Guy, the whistling is getting a bit over the top, I was wondering if the next Ferry covers album, soon to be released to bridge the gap between the last one and the next one, won't include that old chestnut Colonel Bogey, formerly by Whistling Jack Smith. I went to all 3 nights in Glasgow, 23rd - 25th October, 1974, and the Gaucho outfit was worn only on the 2nd night (thankfully, I have to say). I still have a middle-pages Poster from that time, given away with 'Disc and Music Echo', featuring Ferry in full Gaucho garb, which the music paper described rather tongue-in-cheek as 'The Sancho Panza Series'. (Still, it was marginely better than the moustache some 2 years later, probably). However, one particular memory of that evening was that Thommo broke his Bass Drum early on, and only during a song without any percussion for a good length of time (Dream Home) could it be replaced. No 'proper' replacement available, so the tiny little toy-like Bass Drum from support Jess Roden was brought on - didn't half look silly, alongside the Thommo masterpiece kit. Didn't sound too good either ! How Thommo didn't break Jess' one was a miracle. Hairs on the back of the neck standing up dept : The drums to begin (later documented at the beginning of Viva !) whilst Roxy strolled on, in complete darkness... then Manzo launches into a blistering Prairie Rose... (you know the song, the one not about Jerry Hall) and we were off and running... I would rush back and check APS at the moment to check if any 74 tour stuff was on there, but my Vid machine is currently rather dead, as of yesterday. I particularly remember OOTB from this tour, perspex violin frenzy indeed. I've been looking for Roxy's AIWIY appearance on TOTP from this time, which I cannot locate - panic ! - they appeared the week it was released here in the UK. Loved the Roxy 'RM' Logo for this tour - looked cool on the Drumkit, and, I suspect, many Avalonians will have the same tour badge too. They even used that logo again on the '1976 Roxy Music Calendar' which the old Fan Club (run by Peter Leay) gave away in 76'.(found the old calendar stuff the other night, in yet another box tucked away of Roxy 'cuttings'). However 3s 9d = 45d, there being 12 pennies to a shilling in those far off days. A rise of 19p to 45p just due to decimalisation would have been a huge con (even though that sort of thing did happen). So it could be interpreted it as a comparison of ticket prices from Ferry's youth (3s9d) to 1974 prices (45p) or just that 'shillings and pence' became 'pence' with decimalisation (on the general theme of 'change', in both senses of the word). The song 3 and 9 is definitely about the cinema. Ferry mentioned this in interviews at the time of the release of "Country Life". I don't actually remember what the explanation for "Prairie Rose" was at the time, but it may well have been inspired by the cinema as well. In Britain in the 50's & 60's most folks only experience of America was the cinema and one of the most popular images was that of the west in the late 1800's. The big country, the open plains at the time of the Indian wars and the homesteaders as portrayed in many a John Wayne movie. Could it just be that as "3 and 9" reminisced about his early years of going to the cinema in 1950's Britain then "Prairie Rose" may well have been the image of the heroine in the westerns of the day. As far as I know "Prairie Rose" was written prior to his meeting Jerry Hall, if it's so important to some of you why don't you e-mail it as a question to his web site, though I doubt if it would be considered worthy of an answer. On the topic of Jerry Hall why does she have to be dragged up on so many occasions on this list. Ferry had a relationship with her that ended about twenty three years ago. I could understand people questioning what influence 18 years of marriage has had on his songs, but not the constant digging for information on a long gone relationship. This has even decended to the level of the tabloid press in certain postings. There are times when I feel that some of the members of this list would be better off with the latest load of drivel from Mills & Boon. If they are so pre occupied with Ms Hall then why not start a mailing list dedicated to her and let the rest of us get on with discussing the music and the way it is presented to us.
