From what I can gather most of Avalonia was seated in the stalls, a non-tiered area actually below the stage. We sat stage right slightly above the performing area and the sound quality was superb. Way better than RFH and GG. Chris also mentions seeing empty seats. Very very few. I could see right up into the Gods and that was choc-a-bloc. I saw half a dozen empty seats in the stalls and that was about it. I think Chris was paying too much attention to his "agenda." No-one has mentioned the champagne cork moment at the end of the harp solo. It couldn't have worked better. My pal Jeremy Novick is the concert reviewer for the Daily Express and when I bumped into him before the gig I made him promise a favourable write-up. He sent me his "copy" overnight for my approval (!) and it won't disappoint. Hagiographic is a word that springs to mind. Expect it to appear in tomorrow's (Friday) Express. I'll try to find a URL for it. Oi Reecey, get the sleeve notes right! That was me. Interesting point that Jocelyn made earlier - about 'Bryan possibly not performing' ? - please elaborate on this one Jocelyn, it may throw light on his general mood at the end. Info please ! Well all I can say, was that it was indicated to me afterwards that all was not well. I wondered if it had been an illness problem but apparently not. Strop? The look on my companion's face said "what do you think?" I won't surmise, we can all jump to conclusions, however, it was indicated that Bryan is getting very tired now. I did point out that he's had a month off since Paris, but the strain of filming Portuguese TV shows - (do we have any Portuguese Avalonians out there who may have seen this and taped it?) and doing umpteen interviews is taking its toll. Cor, try a 9-5 Mon- Fri in a job you hate and then whinge is what I say!! I also wondered about this stalker thing getting to him. He never makes dedications on stage, not even when his Mum and Dad used to come and see him. Dedicating to his sons and Lucy is a sure fire way of letting some nutter out there know that "this is my real life". And if they've supposed to have stepped up security, someone needs sacking. We ended up backstage purely by accident looking for the toilets (I'm beginning to sound incontinent aren't I - only J O'B knows the truth) and were stopped to be asked where we were going. When we said the toilets, they politely pointed them out to us and left us to it. Finding the backstage action would have been a doddle but in light of all this malarkey not a wise move. So we left again unaccosted and disappeared into the rainy black night of old London Town. (Bournemouth is usually referred to as the 'retirement >town', not Portsmouth !). ....I think most of the South coast is a retirement home!!! I lived in Bournemouth for 3 years, and my, what a racey time I had! (could I have a sarcastic emoticon too?) So, the RAH. Firstly my apologies to everyone who I didn't meet. I was looking forward to a chat beforehand, but I was running late, and couldn't find The Gore either. Very exclusive. I managed to meet up with Andrew Shearer inside just before I sat down, and we arranged to meet up outside after. I was sat on one of the raised sections going off to the side, probably about 50ft from the stage (at an angle), basically looking towards the string section and Julia (oh, I forgot how well she teased those bongos). I spotted Reecye down near the front, but it's difficult knowing who people are just from pictures on the website. When Bryan came on he looked relaxed at first, obviously recognising people (his kids?) just off-stage and giving waves and smiles. He sang well, especially on Casanova, his voice swooping and diving. That song was also the first one that got a good reaction around me, with a few people standing up and gyrating a little. Bryan remembered his 1974 show at the RAH to us as an intro to Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - who was there for that night? I have read about it but never a first hand account, more details if anyone has them. It was on Carrickfergus that I noticed Bryan starting to look uncomfortable as his voice gave way and became a bit croaky. After that he seemed a little subdued, with some of the magic and spark missing from the whole performance - the horn section didn't look as laid back as before, and the strings looked as though they were trying just a little too hard to enjoy it, giving Bryan encouraging looks as he looked towards them (which he was doing often). And that Only Face dedication was unusual. Oh Yeah........? There was definitely a gasp that went round the hall as the opening bars were played, and seemed unrecognisable until the guitar refrain. I like that song, but that arrangement seemed very "polite" and just didn't do it for me. The part I most disliked was "how ^ can you go ^ to a movie show" (I know the words are wrong) and the strings did the little punctuating part ( that's what ^ is), and it just sounded like a commercial for life insurance or something. The big clump of ATGB songs in the latter part of the second half seemed to dull the atmosphere slightly of the terribly polite and well dressed crowd who were obviously waiting for Avalon and Jealous Guy (excited groans and hisses of YES flowed from the couple next to me when these were played). I get the feeling that the performance had to finish as near to 10pm as possible, at around 9.50pm Bryan turned to face side stage, lifted up his wrist, looked at his watch and looked for a nod at the back, and I think that due to time constraints ATGB was dropped. I was glad to see Street Life return for the encore, Jocelyn kindly suggested that it was because he knew I was coming! How could I not enjoy it? I did, and it was great to be in such a historic venue, although the sound was rattling around everywhere. IMHO the Royal Festival Hall in December was better, but maybe that's because I nearly hyperventilated when Out Of The Blue was followed by Street Life. But I have to admit that had the show not been in such a special place I might not have bothered going. After the show I managed to catch Andrew and he led the way to The Gore where I met John O'Brien, Robert Fedder and Jocelyn, and as John testified, it's odd being recognised when you don't know the other person. Good to meet you all, I just wish we'd had longer to talk, and sorry to those I missed. A quote from Reecey >As LITD kicked into gear, I (and, I would think, many more of us) had that ever hopeful >"Is Mackay here" ? I wondered that, especially when the mic was placed at the front just before Avalon (the song, not the people), low down, just right for a sax. and another..... >but something was definitely awry, it was written all over his face, which was sad to >see....But I do wonder if there was someone in that line who he didn't want to see. >There were indeed a couple of very 'strange' people the rest of us had never seen >before. It's the couple of strange people bit that clicked. When I got on the bus to come home two strange looking blokes got on, one was quite old and scruffy, the other young and Asian. They got on a stop apart, but immediatley started talking. I think that they might have been amateur photographers or autograph hunters - "Did you get him?" "Yeah, but Michaeal Caine was better earlier, did you see him in Leicster Square...." - definitely some sort of strange celebritiy hunters. My apologies if I'm being over suspicious, my mind does go over active and invent conspiracies from the slightest thing. Ivor >Am I the only one who has a problem with John Sutton's playing? No. I know what you mean. He is an excellent jazz drummer, but when it comes to something that requires a bit more oomph he just continues to tinker. And his drum fills (LITD especially as there are several) he seems to race ahead in the fill, but because it's a large band and all from sheet music there's not the flexibility that you would have in a jazz quartet, and he just goes his own merry way, and then has to work out where he is in relation to the rest of the band and work his way back in, and does sound a bit clumsy and awkward. The whole ATGB experience has been nice, and it's good to have Bryan back, but I think we're all ready for the real stuff now. BTW I got the Slave To Love compilation and I think that it really works, the songs are sequenced well, with the odd one out being My Only Love, not Just Like You as I thought it would be. That's it, I think I've finished now. I still need to see written proof of this before I believe it. Why should this be a tribute to Jerry? When Bryan wrote the song, I doubt that he'd ever met her. She was a name that came up when doing the Siren cover, which, as we all know, is a later record that Country Life. I've no doubt also that Mike is a thoroughly nice bloke, it's just that when I saw it on TV I was horrified to see someone impersonating BF. I had a similar reaction when someone was on doing Bolan (my hero before Roxy came along and swept all aside). In a strange way, i'd like to have met him at RAH, but i'm glad that Martin reported he was a 'fan' as it would have been terrible if he wasn't. Having said that, sometimes SITE is hilarious, albeit unintentionally. What gets me is the frantic pre-arranged hysteria of the audience as soon as any contestant starts singing. Still, that's Saturday night TV here in the UK (and anywhere else, probably). Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be someone trying to win the Lottery so he can get to the Gigs in South Africa. In Sweden it's called "Aim for the stars", and the show with kids imitating the stars is called "Little stars". They don't sing but mime.
