Sometimes you have all the ingredients, follow the recipe to the letter, and bake the cake just so... and yet the result just doesn't come out right. So it was with Tuesday's Royal Albert Hall, London gig. We had the Cool Ruler, his virtuoso band and a home-town audience in a famous and ancient venue. Yet for me for much of this gig somehow a certain spark was missing. About a month ago I rightly raved about Ferry's bravissimo Parisian performance (see Kicki's web site), a remarkable night of unsurpassed magnificence, as the Roxy-meister teased and tantalised his audience to a backdrop of sheer virtuosity. The contrast with Tuesday night's performance was striking. For me the problems were threefold. Firstly a muddied and unclear sound that swirled around the giant redbrick doughnut. I was in row5, centre, and yet at times it sounded like the band were performing on an oil rig in a force nine gale. Must have been worse elsewhere in the auditorium. Secondly the audience reaction took an age to get going. Maybe it was Ferry's uncharacteristically (20 minutes) late entrance to the stage. Maybe it was the numerous latecomers soaked by London's rainy welcome, the absent debenture holders, or the clueless corporate attendees, more used to ten consecutive nights of Crapton or Stink. The gaps in the audience suggested the ticket touts and scalpers had a bad night. The crowd certainly gave Our Hero a very subdued welcome, with only polite applause for the early songs in the set. Christ! Even the FRENCH knew you had to cheer when Chance Meeting began! The crowd seemed singularly unimpressed with the ATGB songs throughout, and the gig only gained momentum as we approached the interval. But to my eyes the third of the problems was Ferry himself. Perhaps fazed by the lukewarm welcome, nervous at playing in front of the family, wracked by pre-gig nerves, or plagued by some unspecified concert-threatening illness, this seemed to me a lifeless, by-the-numbers performance by the Great Man, poles apart from his captivating performance in France. In contrast to an earlier correspondent, I felt the vocals were pressured. Ferry's voice was so prominent in the RAH's aural soup that microscopic analysis was afforded, and it was less assured this time, sounding positively hoarse on occasions. The Ferry smile was noticeable by it's relative absence in the first half of the show. However his extraordinary tribute to his family before The Only Face was a beautifully poignant moment, and prefaced a superb performance by all on this song, which somewhat belatedly got the crowd enthused. (continued in Part Two) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 03:54:01 +0100 From: "Chris Turner" Subject: [AVALON] The RAH, Tuesday night (Part Two) (Continued from Part One) After the break things picked up though as the material became more familiar to the muzak generation. There was a pronounced gasp as the opening bars of Oh Yeah began, and a huge response afterwards as Ferry, silhouetted against the backdrop, crooned to fade. I thought that Where or When and particularly Out of the Blue were exemplary renditions, Lucy leaning back and raising here eyes to the ceiling as she lost herself completely in the violin solo. A peerless performance. As ever the Maestro is still capable of fashioning moments of sheer drama and beauty in any set. The old chestnuts LST, LITD and DTS were wheeled out as the audience finally found some fervour, and Streetlife (complete with that wonderful parp-y off-key opening) made a very welcome return to the setlist. The optional last encore ATGB was missing on this occasion, perhaps due to the audience reaction. Certainly the ending of the gig was very peremptory with the lights coming up with the band still in mid-exit. Maybe there was just too great a sense of expectancy, perhaps I'm just being grumpy. Being soaked to the skin on the way to the gig didn't help, or being tapped up by numerous touts. Neither did the 'school assembly' chair I had to sit on whilst trying to disseminate the RAH's dismal acoustics. Neither did the fact that the 'phantom foot-tapper' Ivor mentioned in his post (I was two seats behind you Ivor) was sitting right next to me, and also talked drunkenly with her companion throughout every song. Why do these people bother? It's not that the night was bad - it wasn't. It's just that I felt the heights weren't scaled on this occasion, perhaps a testament to the standards I have come to expect from the Great Man. My companion Jayne, who first accompanied me to see BF in Birmingham eleven years before, was captivated by the performance, so maybe my view is a super-critical one, I accept. Anyway, three great gigs and a good one is not a bad return from the four I attended this tour, and it's been a sequence of events I've been privileged to attend, particularly in the company of so many new friends. On this personal note: Sorry to my fellow Avalonians that I didn't get a better opportunity to talk with you on Tuesday, but I had another agenda to follow. I'll meet up with you during the summer no doubt. Speaking of the Netherlands ( yes I survived- Oh the "coffee houses"!), I had in my mind the words from Song for Europe while I was flying to Amsterdam. "Here by the Seine, Rotterdam casts a long lonley shadow". Well having listened to that song for so long I actually believed Rotterdam was near the Seine. I forgot my geography lessons from grammer school. A Dutch friend had to correct me. The Seine river is no where near Rotterdam in fact is not even in the same country. Duh! He asked me just where I got that little factoid. I told him that Bryan Ferry("Oh that Bryan Ferry- Love is the Drug-Yah!") was to blame and he had me believing it. The whole song, the wall of sound like production, the imagery, the world weary vocals, I was seduced. I was all set to walk along the Seine in Rotterdam listening to Song for Europe and now my whole image is blown to pieces. Arrghhhh!!!!! Damn you Bryan!!! The only thing that cast a long lonley shadow was me while walking over the bridges of the Prisengracht, Keizergracht, Herengracht, and the Singel and trying to pronounce those names and in the midst of the cold, grey, drearyness that was Amsterdam for my ten day visit. What happened to Springtime??? Ach... Next trip:Visit where the real Seine runs. Jas PS: Actully I did love Amsterdam. When I saw the man on the ATGB tour in November at the Paramount Theater, the audience could be described as thus : middle-aged and wealthy. And they went nuts for Avalon. And seemed nonplussed by DO the Strand. Count me in as one of those I love Bryan no matter what he does types. Although I can't forgive him for most of Flesh and Blood. I play that one less often than the others. I'm neither wealthy nor middle-aged (close but no there-YET). At the Chicago concert, I would say that most of the audience was of the Avalon irk. They responed more to songs from that period than the other ones. The exceptions being the smart and sharped dressed guys in row six. They responded most favorably to the whole set especially Sunset, Chance Meeting, and Carrickfergus. Too bad he won't be back until the reunion tour. That's okay we can wait.
