Maybe it was just the bands I was following, but I seem to recall that for a period of time (say, from '70-'76) a lot of bands included a song(s) at least based on bluesy gospel/spirituals. Off the top of my head (I`m not even going to go into Black Sabbath) I can name Aerosmith`s Dream On, Bad Co.`s Don`t Bring Me Down, Elton John`s Burn Down The Mission, Bowie`s Somebody Up There (Likes Me), Doobie Bros`s Jesus Is Just Alright, Norman Greenbaum's Spirit In The Sky etc.. I would go along with that (although I thought the near hysteria of the crowd to 'OY' was rather more than it warranted). I thought 'Chance Meeting' was superb but 'The Only Face' was near perfection (and it's not normally one of my faves). 'Sunset' was only spoiled for me by the couple on my left CONSTANTLY taking flash photos with a motor wind camera and actually attempting to tap their size 11 hooves to the crazy beat (not easy even for people who have an innate sense of rhythm). Can I have a sarcasm emoticon here ? Talking of rhythm, am I the only one who has a problem with John Sutton's playing (he's the Father Jack Hackett-lookalike on the drums) ? He's great on the ATGB tracks but, 'legendary' or not, I cringe every time he fudges the fill which brings in the last verse of 'Smoke'. > A small moan was it just where I was seated or was the sound poor? > > I kept hearing loads of feedback & Ferry's vocals sounded muffled at times, There was some feedback from the front stage mic that was set up in front of the piano for the soloists - someone on the mixing desk wasn't paying attention and left it on too long ! Genrally speaking, the RAH (for all its visual splendour) leaves a lot to be desired in terms of acoustics - hence the UFO-shaped baffles suspended from the ceiling to try to dampen the more extravagant reverb. > Here's to the summer > Steve Seconded, Ivor. BTW Those who braved the cold to wait for Ferry after the gig may have overheard (as I did) one of the young Ferrys (in the getaway car) calling out 'Go Dad, go...' as Bryan attempted the ten-signature dash in a record breaking 90 seconds. Last seen clutching memorabilia and drooling front of stage. Maybe he got lucky, who knows? Oh well here goes. I am still in a state of delirium. We managed to get ourselves into a real froth and a lather over this one - probably with the idea of two and a half months of withdrawal symptoms before Petworth and half a bucket of vodka (apologies for the suggestion of the Gore Hotel Bar, where you have to take out a second mortgage to get a round in.) The audience were predominately Avalon/Jealous Guy geriatrics, with no inclination to show too much appreciation until Oh Yea, which they brought to a premature conclusion by applauding while Ferry was just getting into his stride with the oh oh oh oh oh seductive mike mumbling routine. How were they to know, after all he doesn't do that on the album/single now does he. A quick glance up and to my right 6 rows behind Martino and his beautiful little pearl Rachael was Richard Hamilton flying the flag. Jack Dee (the dead pan British comic famed for his sartorial elegance) was in there somewhere too. But more interestingly from our point of view were the two most miserable buggers I've ever seen in my life directly in front of us. We had a whale of a time tormenting them throughout with our standing ovations for every Roxy standard and our word perfect rendition of every tune (now if the tables had been turned I probably would have killed us!) Aaaahhhh the blissful climactic Chance Meeting. How had I forgotten how good that was? Ohhhhhhhhh Out of the Blue. Enough! Enough! I really didn't recover in time to fully enjoy The Only Face as much as usual - I'd peaked far too early. Totally out of character, as Bryan pointed out, this was dedicated to Isaac, Merlin and Tara who were in attendance and Lucy "who is the only face". A tender moment. Followed by a dash to the Ladies. It must crush the band to think their moment is now widely referred to as The Toilet Break. Back with Oh Yea. well...oh yea?? Onwards upwards. Same running order as per usual Falling In Love Again and September Song both particularly wistful. We're hyperventilating now, timing our dash stage wards like a military manoeuvre. Jealous Guy and we'd had enough, sauntered down to join John O'Brien and Emma and Andrew Shearer in prime position stage right, followed rapidly by hordes of reawakened Boys and Girls. Let's Stick Together, Love is The Drug (where Julia Thornton knocked her bongos off the platform), Street Life, Do the Strand. Oh but no Andy, no Phil (and according to legend very nearly no Bryan, who for what ever reasons wasn't going to perform, maybe a tale to be told later?) What a fab night. I thought better than RFH, but that was down to being in an amazingly good mood as much as the quality of the performance. Mr Fedder and I had to agree post gig that Ferry's voice is incredibly match fit now which has an awful lot to do with his more relaxed attitude once he hits the boards. Then back to the hotel for a few more swiftys and home so wired I didn't sleep a wink last night. Great to see the gang again, John O'B and Emma, Martino & Martinette jnr, Ivor (whom I always thought was Richard J -don't ask!), Richard J, Robert, Andrew, Richard S, Reecey, Simon G, Chris T and anyone else I've missed out due to post gig euphoria. We cabbed home through the wet-shiny London streets as, perhaps, Oh Yeah struck up in the Hall. A concert is just another high whilst she is flesh and blood. If you read my profile you'll find that I just recently (October 99) got back in to their music after 19 years. It was too late to catch the ATGB concert in Seattle in late 99. I missed out, what a ninny. I've been kicking myself ever since. Next time our man is in the USA, you can bet I'll be there with bells on. Thanks for asking, Karen Fred said: Hi, One small question : is there someone that hasn't been to the ATGB gigs? The usual suspects from Avalonia were there, of course. Patricia travelled over from the Hague, fashioning a new ring she'd had made featuring the current BF memorabilia design, (Patricia - did Bryan manage to see it ?) and a large contingent met briefly beforehand in 'The Gore' bar, arranging second mortgages for Vodka & Cokes, before squelching round the corner (great weather !) to the venue. Whilst the RAH is certainly an impressive venue, I did feel for anyone unlucky to be either in the wings, or more than about 20 rows back, as the sound just swirls around that wedding cake, if that is where you are situated. Not a problem for most of us Avalonians, resident, as ever, rightly, in the first few rows. It was, of course, impeccable, superb, brilliant, and I just cannot get over how amazing 'Chance Meeting' is with the current treatments - the best I have ever heard it. Both that and 'Face' are tears to the eyes stuff, I readily admit. Nice dedication to Isaac, Merlin, Otis and Lucy too. 'Oh Yeah' received a similar over-rapturous reception as the night before in Portsmouth - am I the only one who thought this one didn't really work ?. I really loved the closing bars of Jealous Guy - not for the song itself, but for the fact that all Avalonians present were looking around at each other, timing to perfection the rush to the stage as LST kicked in. Highly amusing in a military operation type of way. The 'front of the stage' crowd have become something of an exclusive Avalonia Club, it's great looking around and seeing everyone ! As LITD kicked into gear, I (and, I would think, many more of us) had that ever hopeful "Is Mackay here" ? look on our faces, but sadly he wasn't. A very nasty moment about 2 mins into LITD, as Julia's Mic & bongos fell forward, catching Lucy Wilkins on the arm - I swear you could almost hear her sudden cry of pain. Her violin leads hit the floor, some panic ensued, much mouthing 'are you alright' from the other girls, as the song progressed. All was not well, for as much as Lucy struggled to do the solo on Street Life, barely a sound could be heard. The show must go on, Do The Strand seeming ever more powerful as it went on, with most of us copying the mans movements (except the Nijinski kick of course, lest we should damage others) and I heard our Monica before I saw her ("Eskimos and GEORDIES") which brought a wry grin to Bryans face. Then, in a flash, it was over. A few of us gathered in the corridor close to the dressing room afterwards, the usual hopes of a chat & photo, but I had to go outside too to find my Brother and his Wife, then try to sneak back in an unmarked door again. Succeeded, as 'Door 3' was unguarded, though as there's no handles on the outside of them, had to prise it open with a pen before sneaking back in. Well, it was raining, you know. Bizarre - the things we do. Spoke to Lucy W. briefly as she passed us in the corridor, now with a bruised right arm. In the end, we were shifted outside anyway. Monica had an amazing piece of memorabilia - a 'school programme' from Dec 1962 of Twelfth Night, with the cast list including Malvolio played by Bryan Ferry, also some sort of school mag from 1958 where Bryan had written an article. I hope Bryan saw them, Monica. Bryan himself appeared about 11pm, as we were stationed into a line by the Chaffeur, very politely. One thing which was so, so noticeable, was that Bryan was far from happy. Not a glimmer, if you excuse the expression. He came out of the stage door, face down, looking at the ground. There must have only been about 20 of us, at most, not all got signatures, as - and this is the first time I've seen this happen - half way through a few signings Bryan suddenly said "OK, Bye" and zipped into the Car, which sped off. A few disappointed people without a signature, but something was definitely awry, it was written all over his face, which was sad to see. Whether it was his kids wanting to leave quickly, ("Go, Dad, Go" !) or the fact that the family/fan thing was almost 'crossing over' in front of his eyes - who knows ? But I do wonder if there was someone in that line who he didn't want to see. There were indeed a couple of very 'strange' people the rest of us had never seen before. Maybe i'm wrong, I guess we'll never know. Interesting point that Jocelyn made earlier - about 'Bryan possibly not performing' ? - please elaborate on this one Jocelyn, it may throw light on his general mood at the end. Info please ! Great gig though, the hordes of Petworth await, impatiently, for possibly the biggest Avalonia party of them all. How are we gonna get through the next 2 months ?
