Tiny little hall inside though, with as many seats crammed in there as possible, so much so that the poor people at each end of the first 5 or 6 rows could hardly see a thing due to the speaker columns - much complaining to Guild Hall management went on about this. One thing very noticeable about this one, many of the audience seemed a little bit older than the recent dates I'd seen. (Bournemouth is usually referred to as the 'retirement town', not Portsmouth !). This was probably the smallest stage of all the gigs I've seen on the tour so far, they were pretty much crammed on there. Normally at this point i'd say 'don't scroll down if you don't want to hear of any song changes before tonights RAH Gig' - but there were no real surprises. Julia slinked on (as she does) for her 'Song Of The Night', followed by the quartet. 2 numbers from them now seems the norm, as opposed to the original 1. Nathalia seems to be the permanent replacement for Ms. Browning, and nice to see Lucy Wilkins back, who was missing at the previous Gig in Paris. Rosie and Lucy (Theo) were there, as ever. The Band followed, and once again, 2 numbers. TWYLT the usual starter, Bry in fine, fine voice. The setlist is basically the same as Paris, for those who were there, and for those who weren't, the only addition from other recent Gigs is 'Oh Yeah' - which received an amazing reception, so much so that the applause at the end of that one reached well into the opening bars of 'Sunset'. 'Street Life' and 'Can't Get Started' appear to have been dropped for good, now not played since the UK dates of last December. OOTB as brill as ever, mainly due to Lucy W.'s note for note Jobson take, and oh the thrill of it all as all 4 quartetians stood in unison for the final, thrashing few bars of this one. And Bryan remembered the words this time ! Midset, the Band play 2 instrumentals. LST was 8 bars longer, but whether this was deliberate or not I'm not sure, as Bry seemed to be in a world of his own during the harmonica solo, extending it. The sound quality was superb. The usual 'rush to the front' was something to behold during this one, as the space between (sorry) the first row and the stage was about 2 feet, so not that many further back had a chance of getting there. A few climbed over seats to get there, myself included, before you ask. The 'usual suspects' finished the gig, and the encore was of course LITD and Strand. ATGB had been the 'closer' earlier on in the tour, then appeared 'midset' briefly, now it seemed to be something of a possible 'extra', gauged on audience reaction. ATGB finished the gig. Memorabilia collectors note : Nice new poster on sale, advertising the RAH Gig, selling fast, so if you are going to RAH tonight, snap one up quick. Outside later, was a strange situation, and surely must have something to do with the recent 'stalker' stories. The normal coach wasn't used, (but was situated at the back of the hall) fooling a few of us (myself included) and Bry appeared briefly from a side door, for a quick (very quick !) few signings before being bustled into a Limo. There were 2 guys on hand at all times, stating 'stay away from the car please' and suchlike. Even the Girls appeared to be being almost 'escorted' by the roadies at one point. Hopefully we'll get to see the man, if only briefly, after RAH tonight, though on last nights evidence I'm not sure. Bry and the Band really are on excellent form, with Face and Chance still standing out as my current faves from this tour. Now counting down the minutes to tonight, where the ultimate question will be answered : Will there be the usual Mackay appearance during LITD as per usual for London gigs ? And what price a Manzo sighting ?Reecey... - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 05:29:14 EDT From: AESYSTON@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] BF Portsmouth 10 April 2000 Review No "Street life" Oh no,I was hoping it would be back, But, as you say there's always a suprise at London gigs Mackay? I've only seen a few of his pieces. Do you think Ferry has maintained a consistent idealogy throughout his career? Other than decadent languor, nostalgia, melancholy romanticism and the usual Ferryisms, are there conceptual themes running through his body of work? And am I insane in thinking ATGB is his best work in about twenty years? Such a relief to finally actually hear his familiar voice without the 64 track style overdubs and heavy adult contemporary processing so prevalent on dentist office albums like Mamouna. On the subject of song selections, I saw him in Oakland, California at the lovely Paramount Theater and was shocked to witness a rendition of Chance Meeting and Casanova, especially since he told the local press he was only doing the ATGB stuff. Are these usual live numbers for him? When's the album of new material coming out? Trivia-both Ferry and Eno have gone on record to casually dismiss Velvet Goldmine even though they're specially thanked on the credits. Mackay encored at the London dates of the Bete Noire and Mamouna tour. I am in a state of high excitement at the prospect of tonight's performance. The Royal Albert Hall is, for me, the auditorium that most reflects his style. Monumental, a precious jewel. A giant wedding cake baked in Kensington for Victoria's consort. Elegant, fantastic, yet their lingers a sense that's it's all a great joke. Miles upon miles of red velvet. Tiered to a giant dome, where upturned mushrooms suspend on wires to acoustically enhance the space. At the rear of the stage resides the largest organ in Europe, a statistic that presumably includes Mackay's lunchbox. In 1966, as a fresh-faced infant, I performed on this stage in a modern opera. I recall roses hurled at my feet during the curtain call. Years later I was to throw a similar bouquet at the Maestro as he returned to encore These Foolish Things on the same stage, a St Moritz balanced twixt third and fourth finger. Oh how the ghost of that moment clings. Tonight I'm taking my (nearly) five year old daughter, Rachael, sheathed in black cashmere, her mother's pearls preposterously perched upon her alabaster neck. Twenty eight years since I first saw Roxy at the Camden Town Roundhouse. A rite of passage for me. Perhaps she'll get bored half way though, in which case we'll hail a black cab and mark it down to experience. We'll see. Either way something tells me I'll be forking out for cello lessons by the end of the week. When I saw the man on the ATGB tour in November >at the Paramount Theater, the audience could be described as thus : >middle-aged and wealthy. And they went nuts for Avalon. And seemed >nonplussed by DO the Strand. I don`t think you can judge the crowd based on Avalon vs. Do The Strand e.i. big hit vs. not so popular. I do think however you may have seen a much better reaction to, say, Virginia Plain, Editions Of You or Re-Make/Re-Model.....maybe even something like Beauty Queen would have emptied the seats. Didn't Iggy's Lust for Life show up on a car ad? >> Actually, Nick Drake (!) has a song on a car commercial here in the States, and I have heard it reported (on NPR) that he has sold as many discs in the wake of the commercial as he has in the twenty odd years since he died. And there is another car commercial featuring Vaughn Williams "The Lark Ascending". I can only wonder if the folks in Ad Land have any idea what either of these artists were about.
