I've only listened to BN as yet, but it sounds superb. My vinyl copy began to deteriorate quickly and has been in its current buggered state from the middle of '88. Must have been that LP-killer recycled washing-up bottle crud that Gene (IIRC) mentioned recently. It's good to hear the songs instead of surface noise again, though Name of the Game still sucks, as they say. You've probably already seen postings about the Grauniad interview in the UK, but I won't know 'til later as I'm on the digest. Did the FT do anything this weekend? Seems that Bryan prefers to travel on the bus that contains the quartet. Well, one would, wouldn't one? Very astute! As has been said, it's complex and deep. There's some lovely playing and I like the noise (especially the radio) on and between the tracks. The use of noise to add or create atmosphere in Roxy Music songs was one of the strongest pulls on me early on; that treated saxophone in Pyjamarama, the pre-trip-hop mellotron madness of Ladytron... I'm a sucker for all that. It's the damn songs themselves. ATP would seem on the face of it to be a good choice - a darker, ready-made companion to A Really Good Time or Just Like You, perhaps. The end result is a grungey, awkward mess, lift music for the terminally paranoid. Amazing Grace should really have been left to the likes of Cl*ff R*chard. It sounds a tad trite. Given the provenance of the album (as a natural outgrowth of the perceived need for a single to convince Virgin that the Horoscope album was marketable), should I have expected anything else? Probably not! An odd choice to break a five year silence. I was very relieved to hear Mamouna a year later. However, these are only my views and I freely admit that I'd rather listen to Taxi than anything by G. Michael, M People, C. Dion and the Vile Cher (among myriad others)... But that's damning it with feint praise, really. Back to Boys and Girls...
