The problem in getting the stuff that Manzanera has released isn't due to finance. As far as I know any oficial Roxy release will be through or be in conjunction with Virgin. I have heard mutterings of limited edition (20,000 world wide) Roxy/Ferry live cd's, but so far nothing has been confirmed officially. The cd's that Phil produces through his own Expression label are funded by himself hence the surveys on his web site. If the demand is there it'll be released, if not it won't. In the case of Roxy there would be no risk as there is still a healthy market for new releases. I'd love to hear Ferry & Mackay's views on this topic. Mine is OK and so is my Gordon Giltrap 'Fear Of The Dark' 12 " single which was involved in the mixup (the first UK 12" Picture Disc Single, as I remember). >Finally, before my anorak wears out - all my Manifesto CDs - the orig, re-release, then Re-master, have a fault on 'My Little Girl' - a crackle at 1.24 into it, then a 'blip' at 1.26... My original CD was plagued by a kind of 'double splut' (an unusual variant of the more common 'blip') at 1'24" followed by a definite crackle at 1'26" i.e. the other way round to yours !! However, there is no sign of either on my remaster (Virgin 7243 8 47437 2 7). Second, Simon G: > Has anyone checked the version on the b side of Dance Away yet? What fun I'm going to have this weekend! As I recall (it's somewhere in the attic) the version of 'My Little Girl' on my 12" of 'Angel Eyes' is edited almost straight into the song, with 10 seconds or so of intro missing (shame to stop there, really S8^)), but I don't recall any crackle on it (mind you I don't suppose I listened to it all that closely...) BTW 1: I remember finding a blip on the remaster of 'The Tracks Of My Tears' (and when checking, found it on the original CD too) but I don't recall the exact location (except it was in one of the choruses). Dear Kevin: Excellent and poignant analyses. I like your insight - please share more. I know so little about Bryan Ferry but I have always thought him to be quite introspective and deliberate. I love his body of work in total, and can not say there is any piece of Mr. Ferry's recorded output that I do not like. I believe I, and possibly many others, are enthralled with his creativity because it strikes at the heart of emotional venerability, its universal effects, and its personal repercussions. I really do not perceive much distinction between BF covers and originals because they seem to be cut from the same cloth, if you will. I feel each new release progresses, just as life does. Each new release, cover or original, seems to evolve to yet another, more in-depth, level of intricate and personal voyage. If this man's blood could be reduced and placed on a record, his artistry could not be better. A glimpse into his soul? Or is he just adept at tapping into common psyche. An enigma, is the story true to life? Only Bryan Ferry would know. Around and around, around we go. Where we stop, nobody knows. Best wishes. KBP PS - I suppose that an individual with no prior exposure to BF, upon listening to any one BF album (separate from the collection), might be confused or repulsed by what might be seen as an incoherent, possibly truncated assortment of pieces. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 15:56:27 +0100 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: [AVALON] Some stuff on Oblique Strategies Now that I've finished my very late lunch I've managed to get a few bits on Oblique Strategies. I mean, if we got to an impasse, we'd just turn over one of his cards, and whatever the instruction said on it, we'd obey - which led to some hilarious musical insights. We would write out arbitrary chords and then put them up on a board, and then Eno would point to a different chords on the wall and the band would have to follow them. Ok, Taxi isn't my favourite album and some of the tracks are not of vintage Ferry material, but "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", at least the live version that features on the marvellous APS video from the Jools Holland show, is so great. The album version is good enough but how can a just a piano, guitar and a vocalist sound so good? Its a great song anyway but that version really does something. Neil Hubbard is so underrated it is absolutely criminal, his playing is so fitting, and Brians emotion is wonderfully distinct. Thanks for that, I've nearly worn out the video as its stuck on that song, and I have needed to get that off of my chest! No, you're not alone. The only songs that I like are Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Just One Look. I sometimes play the title track. I love the way it starts, but half way through I'm bored stiff! Hell, F+B is better than this! Taxi was an absolute low point in the Ferry oeuvre IMO. Mamouna is much better. I really like ATGB because, among other reasons, I have the sense that Bryan really enjoyed making it. It's FUN! It also undermines this "body of work" thing, because it really doesn't fit. I don't think it has to. At recent concerts, my only small criticism would be that there was, in the end, _too much_ over-familiar solo and RM material. I think that ATGB's been a bit of a revival for Bryan and I hope that helps him work better (maybe faster?!) in future. However, I fear that when he gets home, into the studio, back to whatever aural canvases he's been working on over recent years, he'll be assailed with the old indecision and the tortoise-like progress... Prove me wrong, Bryan!
