Kevin, you raise many, many good points of departure--thank you for that. I have some questions for you (and everyone else who wants to jump in). (And it's not that I don't agree in part or in whole with your very interesting insights--it's just I want to explore what you are thinking a bit further.) On one hand I very much like this idea that Ferry's covers albums are as thematically organized as some of (perhaps all of) the albums of original material. But if each of the can be so easily reduced to the "basic structuralism" that you reference later in your post, doesn't that in a way rob them of their art? Don't get me wrong: I do understand that even the most (seemingly) disorganized work of arts, from Jackson Pollack to _Naked Lunch_, have at their core a coherent vision. But if each covers album can be so easily reduced to that format, doesn't that diminish their luster a bit? That is, Beethoven wrote 9 symphonies is sonata allegro format, but, at the same time, each one cannot be so easily reduced back to that. > There's a great deal more to be said > about the programming of Taxi--the sneakiest and most profound Ferry > collection of covers, but the intent here is to block in the basic > structuralism of the cover collections. Uh, maybe. Personally, I'm a hard sell on ATGB as I find it disappointing. And actually partly for the reasons you wrote in your other post: > My sense regarding Ferry's excursions into covers has always been that > he's treating them as sonic "Ready-Mades." Certainly his early work > with covers is more audacious--more the urnial/Mona Lisa strategy--but > his later work in this area (Taxi and even As Time Goes By) > demonstrate some pretty breathtaking undermining of the original I guess I'm missing out on this in ATGB because with the exception of "Where Or When" and "I'm In The Mood For Love" I don't hear this same approach. In fact, in my opinion it is precisely that ironic, mocking, playful Dadist sense which is missing from ATGB; I find it unsufferably earnest in many spots. > material--but now to more subtle psychological effect. Witness the > somber, literal reading of Miss Otis Regrets and compare it to the > novelty/toss-away version by other artists. Yes, but those toss-away versions were not the definitive versions. Ferry takes his cue from Ella Fitzgerald's version and reproduces it. In the same way he pretty much just replicates Billie Holiday's version of "Love Me Or Leave Me." Overall, I do like your theory and think it holds together well (despite the questions I raised). I just think ATGB is a bird of a different feather. Alas. I have a 4-track Ferry sampler CD called "Sensation" in a cardboard sleeve (like some of the re-masters are in). The interesting thing is that it has a sticker on the front that says "As featured in Coca-Cola t.v. ad." I know *I* have never seen this commercial, but maybe they didn't run in the States. Anybody seen these? They would've been "Taxi-era," I think, because that's about when I bought this CD. The small print in the CD itself reads "Digital Audio Technologies Australia," so that might be where the spot aired. Here are the tracks: Sensation 5:07 The Right Stuff 4:23 Let's Stick Together ('88 Remix) 2:54 I Put A Spell on You (Single Mix) 3:55 These lengths and mixes look fairly standard, but maybe I'm overlooking something. I didn't notice any product tie-ins as far as the music itself, but the back of the sleeve features a pretty girl (kind of girl-next-door looking) drinking a coke from a glass bottle. The sampler looks like an attempt to expose the people who enjoyed the commercial to more of Ferry's music. Any information on this ad or comments on the tracks? I'm curious. When you put Ferry, Mackay & Manzanera in a studio together there always comes out something special. There is this magic that comes alive. That's why (in my opinion) all Roxy albums are better than all the solo-albums or other projects (maybe with the exception of 801-live & Listen now! which are great). I agree with you. THIS is what I'd like to see. A Roxy Music reunion, for five or six live shows, heavily promoted (recorded and filmed of course). A half dozen brand new, never before heard songs thrown in there for sure. At least a token Eno appearance. I'd say three or four shows in Europe, and maybe one in North America and one in Japan. That's it. Period. No more than six. No bullshit, then I think it would be really special and people would get caught up in the excitement, would travel at great expense to the shows, and the media would get swept into it also. Go big or stay home. Sponsored by Starbucks or some other asshole, I don't care. Start the tour with London, then a sold-out New York MSG performance (!!!), then big arena shows in Tokyo, Munich, Stockholm, and the big grand finale back in London again. Brilliant. Then.... you could see about releasing a bunch of live RM material - the "new" and old- and possibly have a couple of platinum sellers or whatever they call them now. And we could all die in peace. > All the best to everybody on the list. > Ole (Norway) Welcome Ole.
