What we (or at least I) need is not more of those collections, but: 1: New live-albums. Especially from the 72-76-period. Manzanera has plenty of them. He wants to release them if Ferry & Mackay agree. 2: A reunion of Roxy. When you put Ferry, Mackay & Manzanera in a studio together there always comes out something special. There is this magic that comes alive. That's why (in my opinion) all Roxy albums are better than all the solo-albums or other projects (maybe with the exception of 801-live & Listen now! which are great). All the best to everybody on the list. Ole (Norway) PS. I don't listen too much to the radio, but almost every day I hear a Ferry / Roxy song on the air. Never from ATGB though. Bryan is quite popular here. An intriguing argument regarding Ferry's fascination with covers is to remember not merely his Pop Arts roots with Hamilton, but also the fact that he's a fan of Marcel Duchamp--and, one can only assume, the Dada movement in general. Early in his career Duchamp often produced what he termed "Ready-Mades," in which he essentially turned found objects into art by merely signing them (his famous signed urinal, for example) or by making an artistic statement on top of another artist's work (the equally famous moutache that he drew on a postcard of the Mona Lisa). My sense regarding Ferry's excursions into covers has always been that he's treating them as sonic "Ready-Mades." Certainly his early work with covers is more audacious--more the urnial/Mona Lisa strategy--but his later work in this area (Taxi and even As Time Goes By) demonstrate some pretty breathtaking undermining of the original material--but now to more subtle psychological effect. Witness the somber, literal reading of Miss Otis Regrets and compare it to the novelty/toss-away version by other artists. And, if you don't buy into the Dada influence with regard to Ferry's covers, consider that his relationship to covers is that of a Jazz artist. Doing a cover gives the audience an instantly familiar point-of-reference that serves as context for the changes that Ferry rings on the piece. Miles Davis and John Coltrane were composers for the first magnitude, but had no problem using My Funny Valentine, Someday My Prince Will Come, My Favorite Things and even Greensleeves to their own ends. I like to think that Ferry is doing this more times than just "treading water" inbetween collections of original material. A final thought about Ferry's cover material--I've only just rejoined this group after many years' absence, so excuse me if you've already dug into this--has there been any discussion/analysis of Ferry's programming of his covers collection? I think that he manages to create even more personal meaning by the juxtaposition of cover songs and the larger arguments they can make when considered as a whole collection. Regarding the programming of the covers collections, a good place to start is to consider how the last songs on both These Foolish Things and AnotherTime, Another Place (both title tracks) frame the rest of the covers that precede them. In the case of TFT, the last song is both an admission of the disposablity and often campiness of the songs, but also stresses that the songs are triggers to memories--and those memories are more important than that which has triggered them. This raises the collection from ironic pop cultural excursion to a memory piece--see it as Song For Europe as a pop-tune montage. Ferry up the structural stakes with ATAP (which he's described as the "deluxe version" of TFT) by penning the last tune and literally referring to himself as sitting at home, spinning records. In retrospect, then, the whole album has been an evening spent with a whistfully reminiscent Ferry as plays the tunes and wonders what happened to the lost love refered to in this title track. Further Another Time, Another Place refers not only to eclectic mix of cover material, but also, paradoxically, to Ferry's hope for the the future: he hopes to once again meet the lost love at another time and another place. Past and future is thus neatly collapsed in the singers mind and a "simple" collection of covers takes on psychological implications. Taxi is not merely a collection of covers, but structurally is a circular album. The extend "outro" of I Put A Spell On You" is actually what Ferry has retitled Because Your Mine at the collection's end. I think a good case can be made that the songs on Taxi are meditation on the implications of I Put A Spell On You--and that, at the end, the singer is right back where he started--probably ready to make the same mistakes again. There's a great deal more to be said about the programming of Taxi--the sneakiest and most profound Ferry collection of covers, but the intent here is to block in the basic structuralism of the cover collections. On As Time Goes By, it's the first (and also title track) that hangs over the whole collection ("it's still the same old story" easily refers to all of the 30's songs in the collection and stresses not the disconnect of the songs from our time, but rather, their unchanging core truths). [snip] HA! this is interesting. someone's thinking more out of the box than myself; i wouldn't have thought of this. is taxi something of an exception, though? in terms of _why_ it was made - the 'rush' to get it out, in light of the 'horoscope' fiasco ...? btw, his 'miss otis regrets' is the best arrangement/production i've ever heard (for the song) - and i don't care for this song in particular. >And, if you don't buy into the Dada influence with regard to Ferry's >covers, consider that his relationship to covers is that of a Jazz artist. >[snip] i didn't like a lot of the covers davis, in particular did (as an example), but this is an interesting idea as well. probably about as 'jazzy' as bry will get - that is, exclusively in his *approach* to covers. >A final thought about Ferry's cover material [snip] --has there been any >discussion/analysis of Ferry's programming of his covers collection? hmmmm; this, i think, begs further discussion too. we should all go home tonight and listen to the covers albums ... peaces/ms ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 12:57:05 -0600 From: "Will Frechette" Subject: [AVALON] kiss my rat's ass I was with you, Eman's OK, but then he sent that "You know you've had email too long" thing. He has been rehearsing this part for ages (I personally viewed one episode) and he'll be perfect. If they're anything like my original copies of Stranded and Country Life, they'll be bloody awful! Nice to have them around, though. Both these releases had altered running orders when compared to vinyl and CD, something I've never quite got used to in later years. Something to do with evening out the playing times for the tapes. [A Song For Europe on side 1 and Amazona on side 2, and A Really Good Time (side 1) and 3 and 9 (side 2) swap places.] Thanks also to Colleen for the news of the UK summer gigs. I wonder if he'll do "Have you got a light, 'bor" in Norfolk as an encore? After all, Eno's dad was a whistling postman after all...
