Jason's hit the toad right on the beak: most of the bickering's been between "a couple of virtual people." Then again, eman recently sent me a Clash promo CD for free -- he even paid the postage -- so from my perspective he's just plain better than virtual (if occasionally lacking in impulse-control & topicality). Meanwhile, Irene's enriched my life in other ways entirely: I can never read her posts without feeling I've just encountered the feminine (though who knows?) Mr. Hat, someone whose every word virtually (or is that practically?) defines the term "rebarbative." So, Jason: let people bicker if they can stay on-topic. And to eman: you're o.k. with me, but maybe you more than most could try a little harder to stick to the subjects the list is for in the first place. But for you, Irene: please don't ever shave. Hello Jim, In terms of sound quality, I found the CD transfers of Roxy albums to be quite good anyway; consequently, the remasters (although definitely better) are, IMO, less of a step-improvement than the Ferry ones. I hear the biggest improvements to be in 'Roxy Music' (warmer), 'Siren' (warmer - and they've restored the beginning to 'Whirlwind' !), 'These Foolish Things' (clearer) and 'Another Time, Another Place' (clearer). In addition, the original version of 'Angel Eyes' has been restored to 'Manifesto' although 'Dance Away' is still the single version (like the previous issue). I bought the cardboard sleeve versions for nostalgic reasons (and superbly reproduced they are too, right down to the original red/yellow stippled writing on 'Stranded'), but the subsequent jewel case versions have printed lyrics inside every album (why couldn't they have put an insert sheet in with the replica sleeves ???) and can be found considerably cheaper too, at least in the UK (£4.99 in some shops). As usual, you pays yer money and takes a chance...! To further complicate matters, plans are afoot to issue the same Roxy remasters in yet *another* form, with some sort of commentary from Phil Manzanera. Details are patchy at present but www.manzanera.com is worth a look (if you haven't already...) Personally, I find the sound quality of 'The Thrill Of It All' perfectly acceptable (the new discs have a certain 'presence' which these don't quite have, but that would be serious nitpicking !). However, my favourite B-sides 'The Numberer' and 'Your Application's Failed' sound very poor (like they were taken from some sort of second generation master) and the live version of 'For Your Pleasure' is missing (oh, and 'South Downs' has been put on backwards, no doubt for amusement !) Still, it's nice (and frankly, I'm pleasantly surprised) to have the choice... Now, isn't it about time they brought out some Eno remasters ? Regards, Ivor. BTW The downside to all this umpteen-bit immaculate remastering is that I can now pick out a number of nasty 'flaws' in the master tapes (I won't mention them here in deference to people who haven't heard them and don't their listening spoiled by having them pointed out...) Personally, I have the cardboard sleeve versions and the jewel versions. I love the LP sleeves but I'd hate to be handling them all of the time so I picked up the jewel cases. Compulsive, I know... The cardboard 'Roxy Music' does not have "Virginia Plain", which, although I know you can sequence track orders on CD players, still gives it a more natural feel... If you want the LP-style CDs, you should probably hurry up. I can't speak for the UK, but the US shops and online shops appear to be quickly running out... I avoid them and I hope they avoid me. Fact is that most people leave places where everybody 'hates' them. Some people need some time to realise that it is better to leave or shut their mouth. Dear Jason and Jill: First, I'd like to express my appreciation for the existence of the Avalon list. Thank you for giving us this spot. Abusive list members should queue their egos at their web browser. Obviously there is no accounting for the manners individuals have learned, and only a few list members display dysfunctional behavior. One would hope that those so defective would sublimate, channel their anger and aggression into productive ventures. With regard to all members, we should not rely upon any entity other than ourselves to defuse situations. Each member must act responsibly. Each of us are real individuals, and the abandonment of common sense and etiquette used on-line should not occur. Personally, I tend to ignore persons whom I do not find reasonable. If avoidance isn't possible, I step back and carefully consider my response lest I should be as ill-mannered as they are. Failing that, remember, if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all, and, what you do comes back to you. I'm off the soapbox now, please forgive my preaching (a seminary flunk-out, you see :-)), it does not well suit me. I wish all of you well. KBP If your blankets are torn may your breezes blow warm, may your treasures be what you find. May the burdens you bear like your bounties be shared, may you leave something good behind. Should the sky and the land rise to your command, may your senses cut like the knife. Live in peace with the earth as in death as in birth, may you prosper and have a good life. 'Whirlwind' on the original UK version is missing the initial 'off-beat' start that the original Island (and subsequent Polydor) L.P. had, so it actually comes in slightly later ON the beat - very off-putting when you're expecting the normal intro. I must admit that I find it ironic that a yuppie, bourgeois prick would listen to the Clash not understanding that everything they stand for and sing about is exactly the opposite of him- I guess opposites attract. Maybe that's why he likes Ferry/RM. Because he is NOTHING like him/them. - --- KB Porter wrote: > Dear Jason and Jill: > > First, I'd like to express my appreciation for the > existence of the > Avalon list. Hi Reecey, Well spotted!! I checked my 2 CD's of Manifesto and here's the low down. 1. Manifesto(Reprise 26046 USA) - a crackle at 1.24 into it, then a 'blip' at 1.26... 2. Manifesto(Remastered Virgin 47458) no crackle, but still has "blip" at 1.26. So, apparently Bob Ludwig fixed the crackles, but not the "blip" on the re-mastered version. Clearly, nobody reviewed this before it was approved for mastering. I thought Bryan was a perfectionist? Germany) has nothing at 1:24 and a *crackle* at 1:26. And yes, I checked 1:28 as well. Too bad I don't have a working turntable to check the original vinyl. -wfs - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 19:01:50 -0800 From: William Sommers Subject: Re: [AVALON] Anoraknaphobia ! - Re-masters At 06:52 PM 3/29/00 -0800, William Sommers wrote: > My original CD (1979 Polydor 800 031-2 W. Definitely the first CD release available in the US. -wfs - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 23:55:28 EST From: Gal410@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] remasters In a message dated 3/29/00 6:18:49 PM Eastern Standard Time, m_shanahan@hotmail.com writes: << HMV canada (www.hmv.com) were extremely, extremely well organized. i ordered all of the remasters on the 17th, received them on the 21st, minus three that were backordered. even those were received by friday the 24th! >> I ordered all my remasters from them back in December. I also found them to be the most efficient company to deal with. I received my cd's in a few days. Their prices for U.S. dollars are the cheapest I have seen. Some of the RM/BF remasters were as low as $8.00. Take no prisoners, like that album very, very much. Incredibel club-atmosphere on that album. Reed is very sharp too the people in the audiance, another one I can remember"If you write as good as you talks, nobody reeds you" Variations for some people on this list: If you talk as could as you write, nobody listens" If you like Reed this album is a must have, very soulfull version of Streethassle, pale blue eyes. mmmmhhh Han - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Name the source: "I've got enough attitude to kill everyone in New Jersey." ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V5 #128 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
