These products are very good at what they do, I had the VPI 16.5 (about $500) but I sold it recently. Vaccums start around $200, or you can make one yourself for $100 or so. But... in fanatical audiophile/record collector circles it's becoming almost unanimously acknowledged that the Disc Doctor Miracle Record Cleaner is the way to go. The guy behind this has done a staggering amount of research and it shows. Their brushes not only work deeper into the grooves, but the liquid solution also inhibits any bacterial growth and the album only has to be cleaned once, ever. I never heard what was on my records until I cleaned them with this stuff, it's unbelievable. It's also very economical, about $65 for the stuff plus another $100 or so of distilled water (50 1-gallon bottles) will do 500-600 LP's. Works out cheaper than the vaccums. Having said that, the DD method is pretty inconvenient to use (as with almost everything vinyl). It requires some table space, a spare mat, dishrack, distilled water, and time, about 5-7 minutes of grunt work per record. This will take you to nirvana if your stereo is capable of high resolution. But if you have a cheap turntable and stylus, the benefits may not outweigh the effort. If that's the case and you don't want to spend a fortune, I'd suggest the Discwasher brush and D4 fluid, if you can still find it (about $50 ?). It does a decent job. A carbon fiber brush ($25) for wiping dust and static off clean records is also essential, no matter what you do. Needledoctor sells all this stuff. http://www.discdoc.com http://www.needledoctor.com regards, Noam - ----- I was listening to some of my vinyl albums on the weekend, notably the June 74 live set with Eno, Ayers, Cale et al, and remember reading in a group that Vinyl cleaning technology has improved greatly since I last purchased one of those static-free cloths! Sigh. Sometimes I am genuinely confused--not to mention beginning to be concerned--when I have to explain myself again, but here goes. I thought it was clear from my post (which I thought was somewhat tongue-in-cheek) it wasn't that I necessarily thought that the stalker was a lie. It was that I thought the source of the information was not exactly a reputable publication. Meaning, for those who are having trouble following my line of reasoning (and I sincerely apologize for not being clear enough), that if there were some truly serious threat to Mr. Ferry's person--given that he is so famous, A National Treasure, &tc.,--no doubt this story would have made it into another newspaper, presumably one without reports of alien abductions and the like. That's only partly true. Our broadsheet (serious, highbrow, holy) newspapers would be unlikely to carry a story about even , say, Paul McCartney being stalked unless it got to court. (And this rag doesn't really live in the National Enquirer space re aliens etc ; it's more "Amazing story of headmaster's lust for 17 year old, page 7 - - And see our bubbly topless Sharon (Age 16) page 8.)
