It is set in the early 70s does feature Virginia Plain (I can't remember when though), there's also Mott's Roll Away The Stone (that might be the opening titles). The 70s soundtrack is one of the selling points on the video sleeve. It's one of those films that makes an impression, but being forgetful I can't remember much. SimonG >>> 03/22 6:48 am >>> Oh, one more thing before I go on vacation:. Maybe this has been mentioned before. I was channel surfing last Sunday night (Andrew & Kim : The Sundance Channel) and came upon the movie Braking the Waves. I wish that I had tuned in earlier. I caught the last 20 minutes. I noticed on the closing credits that Virgina Plain was in the film. Had anyone seen this film and could confirm hearing it played? When I get back I will rent the film . Emily Watson was very moving in the parts that I did see. It includes various stages of synthesizer development from the Theremin to the DX7. Very interesting stuff in the show including an ancient Theremin Cello, several Theremins (including one that is set up for anyone to play), various Moog synthesizers, a Roland Guitar Synthesizer, and some other stuff. There are also a bunch of great framed images of old synths and schematics. There is even a picture of Cary Grant playing a Theremin. This is truely worth seeing. Sorry I didn't get this out in time for you all to make the Robert Moog lecture which took place last night (Saturday March 18). It was amazing. There is also a Theremin concert today (Sunday19) at Mercyhurst College, here in Erie. However there is time for you to see the exhibit. I will send another letter later telling the exact dates of the exhibit, but it just opened yesterday, so it will probably be up for a month or two. LONG POST ALERT You go away for a few days and you get 650 messages. The joy of the list. Everything from big suits to David Bowies "Serious Bankloan" tour in the early eighties. But I notice that due to very interesting posts from Tom Wallace a debate started on Ferry's profile and the appropriateness of yet another compilation. This is a subject dear to my heart. I cannot believe that Ferry doesn't care about the commercial success of his work. Ferry surely wants his records to sell. One of the best articles I've read on him was in the Sunday Telegraph quite recently "The serach for glamour". Well he's not going to find it by not charting with ridiculous choices of singles released two weeks after all his fans have bought his album. Two things might have got airplay and TOTP appearences on ATGB - Where or When and IITMFL. But they weren't released. I'll say it again , - he cocked up badly with Bete Noire. Maybe it's just a coincidence but those who think sales don't matter to Ferry might want to consider how his confidence was shaken to the core by the commercial failure of this LP. It took a bloody long time for another one to appear and that was a deliberately commercial covers LP WITH A HIT SINGLE ON IT. And there's another daft choice of single - YPS, great track, bad single. Promoted "Mamouna" the track for weeks, got R1 to play it , and then released a song you have to hear 50 times before you like it - mad. I agree with Richard Swift, and I cling to the notion that Bryan Ferry will have a top 10 single in the UK again. The last one was 15 years ago, not counting LST remix. And yet this guy walks onto the National Lottery and sells out tours. Colleen's observations about ATGB selling because of the songs as no one has heard of the singer may be true of the USA but not the UK. Ferry remains a star. For all the lack of commercial success 9 out of 10 people in the UK KNOW who Bryan Ferry is. It is for this reason that we continue to see compilation albums. The worry I have is that Ferry has retained his credibility and continual releases of packages may damage this - and I still think Virgin haven't handled him very well. ATGB is a welcome return to the unexpected from Ferry, and this collection isn't. There is no getting away from the fact that collections would be more defensible if he had actually made any new records between this one and the last ! So come on Bryan, just go for it and release the new stuff .
