No, I'm *not* saying they are similar songs, just that they both took me a while to get used to ! To put it in perspective, I was playing devil's advocate for a song I thought was complete crap a few years ago that has grown on me to the point where I can listen to it on its own terms. I no longer think it's the worst thing he's ever done and, as I say, I hear the sound of a man enjoying the chance to sing a simple upbeat song. > michael bolton was just a 'worst nightmare' absurdist comparison. i > actually like 'carrickfergus' - and ... i don't get the connection > (w/'dance'), but then - i'm also not familiar with runrig ... I just wanted to illustrate that 'Dance...' IMO has a strong 'folky' element both in the melody and in the straightforward lyric. I found that once I heard that quality in it, then I could accept its 'naivete' as refreshing and 'true' rather than cloying or contrived. > are you including the lost celine dion covers album? I don't know, what does she cover, 'Strictly Confidential' ? Where does this appear? I guess one got by me. (Although not half as good I am sure!)/ "Day for night" refers to the illusion of filming a night time scene, in the day time. Filming "day for night." French film criticism refered to this as "american night." This was typically done in noir films, or B Movies. The "night" always looks somewhat unreal, surreal, or downright laughably fake. It is an illussion. What they did was film a scene that was obviously suppose to follow sequentially as a night scene, during the day. They would either stop down the exposure, or print down the negative to make it look darker, almost like night -- but you can almost always tell the "moonlight" is too bright in many areas. e - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 00:50:50 EST From: AMeyersLD@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] My Roxy RE-masters... Does anyone have any info on Peter Murphy? A friend suggested we go to his concert here in Chicago tonight. I just got back. It was intriguing. Since his voice is in the lower registers and with a British accent to boot, it was hard to understand what he was singing about. The sound mix was horrible. I know little of him outside of the fact that he was a founding(?) member of Bauhaus and that he has been a solo artist for some time. I only know of Bauhaus thru Bela Lugosi is Dead ( from The Hunger). I was not into the Goth thing, but understand that he had a big hand in it. I understand Bauhaus split up an the other members became Love and Rockets ( I do know of them). Has anyone watched the Saturday Night Live segments that featured Goth Talk? It's a hoot. I have heard a few of his songs before (Cuts You up, The Sweetish Touch (?)), but am not up on the rest of his catalog. His performance and mannerisms suugested a pixie like David Bowie with a hint of the Ziggy persona. Maybe our British contingent can give me lowdown on him. Is he popular over there? He seems to have a cult following over here. The club/goth kids came out in droves. Incidentially, he played the same theatre that Bryan played here in November-the Riviera. It was a good concert. His young band (?) band gave him ample support. The lighting was very dramatic and moody in shades of red and purple. I just wish I had did my homework before I went or dressed for the music. I did for Bryan.
