How nice is it after 25 years to get the re-mastered and 're-modeled' "Siren..." I can hardly believe my eyes and ears listening to the album and reading the lyrics... I have always felt in a small minority in feeling that "Siren" was Roxy's finest effort, and yet through all these years I've felt that the album must have been a minor release since they didn't bother to include any liner notes (EVER!) in any release (album, cassette, or cd, import or domestic!). What a joy it is to sing along, karaoke style, to "Just Another High" and "Could It Happen to Me?" :) Before I got "Siren," I acquired "Maniefesto" (with lyric sheet) and "Avalon." Now, it's only a matter if time before I get "Stranded," "For Your Pleasure," and "Roxy Music." Because of all the refs to Paris lately here, yesterday I started to leaf through my copy of "Above Paris" which is a great "up in the air" pictorial review of the city and its surrounding areas. It was done by Pierre Salinger and a helicopter pilot taking some nice trips above the city. There are some great pictures in there. I was in awe of how Paris is laid out. And as a proud native New Yorker I'd have to say that I think Paris is competing with it in my head for greatest city. But I've got to experience Paris first before I make my mind up! But please do they expect me to be the Ugly American? Shall I bring some Ferry cd's with me? Both cities are jewels in the crown so to speak. Everyone loves to go up the Eiffel Tower for the cool views, but most times there's a 2 hour queue so forget that - if you want a cool aerial view of Paris - go to the Metro station at Montparnasse Bienvenue - and outside there's a huge office block (you can't miss it) and take the lift (sorry, elevator) to the 56th floor, and sip on an Espresso whilst gazing over just about every rooftop in Paris. There's a few stairs up to the 59th, which is an open-air vantage point. Cool. Another great viewpoint - but a cute little district too, is the 'village' part of Montmartre - take the Metro to Abbesses - turn right out the exit, up the hill a bit, right again, and you're approaching the little 'artists square' - very touristy - but nice all the same. This is virtually right next to the Sacre-Coeur - splendid views over Paris once again, and a wonderful place. With only 2 hours - difficult to know what to suggest - but if you have time - you gotta see Notre Dame, so get down to St-Michel or perhaps Cite Metro, stroll by the Seine while you're at it. (Shades of 'A Song For Europe' here). Actually - this will take longer than 2 hours - so if you are pressed for time - make it just the Sacre-Coeur and Notre Dame... Mind you, I don't even live there - I just visit, but it's recommended, of course - my fave City, along with New York (although I haven't been to NY in 10 years). Hope that helps. This is Johnny Reece, for the Paris tourist board, handing you back to the Studio. Now over to Julia Thornton with the Weather... My initial reaction to 'Dance With Life' was not dissimilar, but then you should have seen my face when 'Hark the frozen chimes of winter' first drifted out from my old music centre speakers ! The same goes for 'Your Painted Smile'. I would suggest giving it another listen with a different mindset - I have actually grown to like this (and I wouldn't have believed that possible when it came out first). IMO, this is nothing like Michael Bolton but is actually far closer in feel to a folk song like 'Carrickfergus' (another cringe-fest for me when it came out). If you don't believe me, compare it with something like Runrig's 'The Greatest Flame'. The lyrics and production are simple and direct (Trevor Horn's no slouch !) and Bryan's double tracked vocal leading into the harmonies is very effective - he actually sounds like he is (heaven forfend) actually enjoying himself singing this ! Don't get me wrong - it's not up there with the greats but it's not his worst moment either (I'll leave that discussion for another day...) Bryan needs to get out of overdub hell and exposure to other peoples' songs and production methods like this can only be a good thing. Go on, loosen up and give it another spin, it'll grow on ya !
