Actually, my only exposure to the Residents had been through their music (I've heard "Meet the Residents," which I liked a lot, and "Eskimo."). Would like to see this film someday if possible. The plot as Colleen described it, with the villains stealing the good guys food supply, and a gang going after the thiefs, reminds me a lot of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. The idea of the drill-equiped shopping carts is interesting too. In '72 it may have been a parody of the latent dark side of domestic American culture, but shopping carts now seem to have taken on another kind of sinisterness, since so many homeless Americans must live out of them. Well, enough thoughts for today. Ciao, Heather Marie Buch - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Take the Avalon electronic IQ test! It's a collection of essays by everyone from John Updike, to Franz Kafka, William Shakespeare, Tom Wolfe, and of course Donald Barthelme's stream-of-consciousness synopsis of the Ed Sullivan show. The book was published in '72 and edited by Edward White. I just found it in a box of free books in the English dept. of the University of Chicago. The ISBN is 0-393-09969-5. Good luck. Actually, we may have a 6 hour stopover in Paris on the way back from our June trip to Denmark. So that means at least 2 hours in the city if we take a 45-minute train ride from the airport. What could one do with 2 hours in Paris, if they've got a 2-month old baby along and have never been there before? Everyone loves to go up the Eiffel Tower for the cool views, but most times there's a 2 hour queue so forget that - if you want a cool aerial view of Paris - go to the Metro station at Montparnasse Bienvenue - and outside there's a huge office block (you can't miss it) and take the lift (sorry, elevator) to the 56th floor, and sip on an Espresso whilst gazing over just about every rooftop in Paris. There's a few stairs up to the 59th, which is an open-air vantage point. Cool. Another great viewpoint - but a cute little district too, is the 'village' part of Montmartre - take the Metro to Abbesses - turn right out the exit, up the hill a bit, right again, and you're approaching the little 'artists square' - very touristy - but nice all the same. This is virtually right next to the Sacre-Coeur - splendid views over Paris once again, and a wonderful place. With only 2 hours - difficult to know what to suggest - but if you have time - you gotta see Notre Dame, so get down to St-Michel or perhaps Cite Metro, stroll by the Seine while you're at it. (Shades of 'A Song For Europe' here). Actually - this will take longer than 2 hours - so if you are pressed for time - make it just the Sacre-Coeur and Notre Dame... Mind you, I don't even live there - I just visit, but it's recommended, of course - my fave City, along with New York (although I haven't been to NY in 10 years). Hope that helps. This is Johnny Reece, for the Paris tourist board, handing you back to the Studio. Now over to Julia Thornton with the Weather... It reminds me of a Helmut Newton photograph - the skyscraper with the view of Paris below, with the glamourous model looking out the window and wearing 70's YSL. I can see a new side-business operating out of your record store - "For the rocker with no time - 2 hour trips to Paris, planned in the spirit of your favorite band." You could have the Roxy trip, the Doors trip, the Piaf trip, etc. :-). Thanks again! Waiting for CD delivery can be brutal, and Karen's up in Alaska.. and anyone who's read her profile knows she is a diehard fan, a veritable sponge.. is someone able to make an mp3 of Mother Of Pearl for our snowbound girl friend? I'd do it but I lack the necessary technology. God bless your hearts. - -Noam two silly bits of Avalon-ish trivia; I was browsing the used vinyl bins yesterday and noticed some albums by a funky, self-obsessed looking 70's R&B guy who went by the name of e-man (the "everything man"). Yup. Cover photo of the e-man leaning against a large tacky automobile. Also, my stepdad was in NYC recently and he took the opportunity to check out what are considered by many 'experts', to be currently the world's best loudspeakers... yes, they are made by Avalon Acoustics. He heard the Avalon Eidelons ($25,000/pair) and was quite impressed. The top of the line Avalon Osiris are (cough, cough) $75,000 per pair. I wonder if Bryan owns a pair. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V5 #102 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
