It's truly amazing in my opinion and the Jon Hassell trumpet on > the song is pure genius!;) I liked Milla's 'The Divine Comedy' album back in 1994. Some distinctive arrangements with lots of mandolins and strings and, perhaps surprisingly, a voice of personality (with traces of Kate Bush, Tori Amos etc). Regards, Ivor. n.p. The "Pop Culture" book sounds like a must-have refernce resource! Jsut curious -- was there any mention of "Music Connection"? I guess what I'm wondering is whether it was distributed nationally (syndicated) or produced locally here in the SF Bay Area. Can you look it up if you ever get the chance? OK, here goes... 9th March, 2000 : An Avalonia convergence in Cafe Leffe, Paris, consisting of myself, Chris Turner, Jocelyn & Colin, Monica & 2 friends, all chatting excitedly, swopping stories, looking at photos, and gradually getting more worried by the minute, as Luc was a little late. At 7.40pm the hero of the hour arrives, clutching a handful of tickets for all, and we make our way the 50 yards or so to Le Grand Rex. Great little Theatre, very Art-deco, and the sort of place that was built for great acoustics. Half of us in the front row, half of us in row 2 - superb work Luc. And so it was - the usual beginning, with the ever more startlingly-beautiful Julia beginning proceedings, (OK OK, I know) followed by the Girls of the quartet - with a new Girl replacing the much-lauded Lucy Wilkins this time, one Helen Hawthorne. One number from them - followed by 2 from the Band this time. Then it was up and running - and Bry appeared. The audience reaction was quite stunning, and, of the 6 dates I've attended on this tour so far, definitely the most enthusiastic. Paris obviously missed him. Previously, the RFH Gig last Dec was my fave, though probably because I landed front row centre at the time - but this more than equalled it. This was the best I'd heard the Band - completely superb in execution, and really up for the gig, egged on by an ever excited audience. Helen did well on the 'Out Of The Blue' solo (nice to see that re-instated) though not as Jobson - like as Lucy - but hey, she's the new Girl. A similar Setlist, i would guess, as the more recent German dates, as we were treated to 'Oh Yeah'. We knew the Setlist beforehand, as Monica managed to get a copy of it just prior to the Gig. If anyone reading this recorded the Gig - the shouts of "Yaaaaay" at the beginning and end of every song - that's our Monica. ATGB was shifted once again, back to the very end of the Set, for a little 'extra encore', as it were. For the encore, the Girls all appeared in BF Tour T-Shirts, and had all let their hair down (Yeh, yeh, I know, I'll behave). Superb all round - Bry got his customary gift from Monica, and the rush to the stage for LST was as impeccably timed as ever. I attempted to take a few Pics with my ever so temperamental Camera (remember only 1 came out of the 20 or so Gig shots from Brussels) so I'm keeping fingers crossed this time. A long, long wait outside this time - no small room to be drafted in, 2 by 2, for the third time in a row for me (unfair !) but there's still Portsmouth & RAH to come, so i'll try again. We all did get to meet Bry of course, as he appeared on the steps at the front of the venue just after Midnight - about 2 minutes into my birthday, don't ya know - perfect timing Bry. He looked much healthier and happier than after the Dec/Feb dates - his little holiday must have done him good. Some of us managed a quick word with Rosie too, who had appeared beforehand, to nip out for a quick Pizza (don't you feed these girls, Bryan ?). I was especially pleased - as I took along the 1973 RM Songbook, and a 1973 RM 'Pace' Poster (the one that's about 5ft x 4 ft) and the great man duly signed both for me. I'm hoping all is well with Jocelyns Camera, as she got most of the outside shots. Let me know as soon as you get the Pics, Jocelyn ! The poster advertising the Gig was really nice - about 4ft x 2ft colour - safely locked behind glass this time (my reputation obviously precedes me) but I made a mental note to return to the Venue to see if I could get it. Then, a quick return to Cafe Leffe for myself, Chris, Jocelyn & Colin (hey - where did the rest of you go ?) for a quick birthday Beer for me - in glasses that rivalled the Eiffel Tower itself for height. Many RM & BF & various Music stories swopped again, naturally. March 10th : I'm 42. Many friends at home thought I was quite mad to stay around in Paris for my birthday instead of coming home, but there were places i'd missed out on seeing the last time I was there, and I was determined to make use of my mini-holiday, before an estimated 8 days in a row at work, starting tomorrow. Checked out the little village-like streets at Place de Tetre, Montmartre (now, I could do with having a little apartment there) and then made my way down to the infamous Pere Lachaise cemetery - numerous visits to Paris before, but i'd always missed it out. Hobnobbed (in a rather silent way, obviously) with the likes of Edith Piaf, Maria Callas, Bizet, Oscar Wilde, Chopin, and Jim Morrison. Many 'strays' (as I believe they are called) were hanging around Jims grave - and a constant security presence there too since someone nicked the Bust of Jim a while back. Lots of scrawled letters, Doors CD covers, and cigarettes left with the message "Light My Fire, Jim" etc left there. Many, many present would not have even been born, when Jim took up residence there in 1971. By about 3pm I reckoned it was 'back on the BF case' time, so made my way once again to Le Grand Rex, where I attempted to blag the Ad Poster of the Gig, (now since disappeared from the outside display) by being ever so polite and crawling to the staff, whereby I was told to return about 5.30 to 'see the Boss'. Well, return I did, and 'see the Boss' I did, who handed it over, and wouldn't take any money for it either. Thanks Guys ! I'll frame it eventually, of course, but something tells me it'll take up residence on the wall of my Record Shop for a while - starting from Monday morning. Night-time was spent checking out Eiffel (still amazingly lit a-la 2000 celebrations) and a further trip to Montmartre, and a painful trip up & down the Arc (600 steps all in - I feel positively bruised). March 11th, yesterday, Saturday, I was out of Paris for a little while, checking out some friends in the royal town of Compiegne, whom I hadn't seen since working with them for a while in 1997, thought I should look them up as I was reasonably close by - sorry to Jocelyn - time ran out to give you a ring for a Beer or two, I'm afraid. Didn't see either of you guys on the train - I presume you were at the other end at your buffet, and me at mine (yep, Eurostar has the luxury of 2 Buffet Cars !) so it was headphones on, and a little light music to pass the journey. (ATGB and Stranded, if you must know.) And check this out, fate fans - the lifts in my hotel were even named after one of Bryans sons - Otis. Roll on Portsmouth, RAH, and Petworth. Salut ! Hi Johnny, ...and many happy returns ! I just knew the gig was going to be brilliant as soon as I realised I couldn't afford the fare...glad it was so good and some small consolation for turning 42 !! BTW I might have known you had a copy of that old Pace poster - mine got thrown out by my mother as soon as my back was turned (well, all right - two years after leaving home, but even so...). Good to have you back, Ive. P.S. I'll email you about the RAH ticket later - a relatively simple transaction has become fiendishly complicated (a big hello to Han and Simon !!) but I'll let you know what's what as soon as I know myself - S8^D - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon Take the Avalon electronic IQ test!
