Richard A. Ujvary controls the vertical and the horizontal when he says: > When I listen to some of the songs on Taxi that instrument called the > theremin > comes to mind. It's in movies like Spellbound and Day Earth Stood Still. > I bet it even was in The Thing. You are entirely correct on all three counts. The theremin player on all of those films and around 20 more, including 'The Lost Weekend', 'Road To Rio', 'Rocketship X-M', 'It Came From Outer Space' and 'The Ten Commandments' was one man, Dr Samuel J. Hoffman. Hoffman practised as a chiropodist by day and a band leader in the evenings. His big break came in 1945 when 'Spellbound' composer Miklos Rozsa convinced Hitchcock and David O. Selznick that a theremin would be perfect for conveying the sense of paranoia needed for the film, even though they reportedly weren't sure if you 'ate it or took it for headaches'. The Musician's Union apparently only knew one registered theremin player who could read music - Hoffman. The rest is history. Hoffman seems to have become something of a celebrity in his day, seen with the rich and fashionable at all the right parties, performing at Lana Turner's birthday party one day, coaching Cary Grant the next. He became so well associated with the instrument that, by the time of his death in the mid-1960s, many people thought he had invented it. I have a superb CD box of three albums Hoffman made for Capitol in 1947, 1948 and 1950 in reproduction sleeves, two of which bear an astonishing resemblance to the covers of 'Roxy Music' and 'Stranded' !! The height of kitsch ('Perfume Set To Music', anyone ?), these albums are incredibly atmospheric and well worth a listen. >I think Ferry likes that weird, eerie sound > that he > apparently gets out of the synths on the songs(guess he can't get hold of > one of those things). Ah, but he can. Robert Moog (remember him ? the inventor of the minimoog) started off making Theremins, and has recently returned to that very trade. They're not that difficult to find (although my recollection is they're not cheap), but are of limited appeal and are tricky to control well. Anyway, BF has the next best thing in the ondes martenot player, Cynthia Miller, on 'ATGB'. I'm not really sure what this means, but I do think that Colleen has a point about the dresses. Does anyone remember Bowie's appearance on Saturday Night Live where he came out dressed like a stewardess? (Kind of a hard image to shake... ;) I think it had less to do with style and more to do with shock value. In the case of Bryan Ferry, I clearly recall the evolution of his "look". Pre-tux, he was no trendsetter in the clothing department (although he clearly had great taste in threads!) But, just like any artist, he wanted to come up with a look that set him apart from the rest. So, I suppose this is where the "video image" part of Heather's post comes in. In any performance medium, a unique look is absolutely essential. As David Lee Roth once said, "It isn't whether you win or lose, it's how good you look!" And you know, I was jealous of how great Bowie looked in that dress...
