John Barrymore is SO elegant and SO handsome, that he almost seems an erstwhile Bryan Ferry in the film. Garbo is the beautiful and angst-ridden ballerina, Joan Crawford actually seems the "backstreet woman" of the film, a street-smart typist with a heart of gold who is not above "travelling" with rich businessmen for money and clothes. Perhaps this is not really news, but Garbo does say "I want to be alone" in the film. I knew she said that a lot, but didn't know if it was more an interview quote or a film quote. Rudy Vallee made a recording of it that became a best seller on the films coattail when revised in 1942 as the Classic "Casablanca" H.Bogart & Ingred Bergman. Smoky atmosphere of Rick's Cafe & a moody nostalgic Bergman sayingto pianist Dooley Wilson,"Play it ,Sam Falling in Love Again, was written by Hollander & Lemer Andre Previn did it for the Movie "Blue Angel" starring , Marlene Detriech. Deep throaty voice of hers was brlliant for that old movie. If you like oldies this is a must......................... "Miss Otis Regrets" Ella Fitzgerald with the Frank Devoir Orchestra ,Cole Porter Here when the Musicials , were the thing, all the tunes Ferry sings on ATGB , were for a movie or Broadway Musicials "Stardust', I wish Ferry woud do was done once by Nino Tempo & April Stevens, a Hoagy Carmichael 1927. I love Ice Skating, Because of the artistist moves & dance. Just saw two skaters back to back skate to "Summertime" Gogi Grant with Henri Rene. These versions were done by "Janis Joplin" & "Al Jarrerea" So good I thought I'd love to hear Ferry sing it. Other choices I'd like Ferry to sing, "Just One Of Those Things", "Where or When"" What'll I Do". Ferry covers "Just One Of Those Things" and "Where Or When" on it. Thanks to Eileen for posting this. But I am compelled to ask: how can Rolling Stone consider this "neww?" It's the same old same old stuff that has been bandied about for YEARS. What would be news would be info that he had a contract with some recording or distribution company for this alleged album. I too had an email over the weekend from a friend from another list who was at the Baden-Baden show, only I was too envious at his hearing "Oh Yeah" to bring myself to pass that news along here. From his review it seemed that Mr. Ferry was in fine form. The setlist seems pretty much the same (at least from what he could remember) and that was the only "new" song. "Out of the Blue" was retired for the evening--and thank God, because that would have been just to expect the rest of us to bear, no? I also asked him if he knew anything about this rumored webcast. But I felt too shy to ask him if he had taped the show. Fantastic! >> Actually, I first saw Roxy on the Midnight Special, just like Jas. Probably not far from him at the time either. It inspired me to beg my mother to let me and my best freind go see Roxy on the Country LIfe tour at the Auditorium in Chicago. Later that year (or the next) I saw Alex Harvey open for the Tubes in Chicago. Great show. But what I remember of those weekend concert shows was my freind George saying that he'd seen this "non concert, mini movie kinda thing" on Don Kirshner's show. Yes, the first of the dreaded Rock Videos! Geez, it makes me feel old. Y'know, we had to actually get up to change the channel in those days.... Andrew in Evanston. Ah yes living in the South Suburbs during that time! Teenage wasteland!!! Those were the daze indeed. Most of the "popular" music to be heard in that neck of the woods was Jethro Tull ( Tull man!), Sabbath, Alice Cooper, America (yeech!!!), Styx ( they came from Hegwish), Utopia, and of course Zepplin. I remember the Alex Harvey segement and the Roxy segment from Don Kirshner's show as well. I remember liking Edition's of You but not the second selection (silly me) Too bad we did not vcr's back then or channel changers for that matter. Why or why I missed the Country Life tour when they played the Auditorium, I have not an answer for. XRT was very much into playing them at that time which made me want to seek them out. I was not a stranger to the Auditorium during that period having seen my first concert there in 1969(Sly and the Family Stone) and later B.B. King, Curtis Mayfield, Mahavishnu Orchestra, LaBelle,... You think you're old, at least I did not have to get my mom's okay to go to a concert in Chicago (LOL). Ouch, I just pulled another grey hair out of my nose.
